I was doing a mylar removal on my day one mylar High Speed, this thing
was friggin' beautiful, I was going to take it to Expo this year! I
use the hot air gun and it comes up like a dream, colors are even
brighter than I hoped!! Unfortunately, it leaves the regular tough
glue on the playfield and I do the goo gone with the paper towel thing
and then move on to VM&P Naptha and finally on to goof off!
Nothing is working on this machine! I finally decide to heat up the
playfield a little to soften up the glue, hopefully.
I take the PROPANE torch, don't ask me why, I don't know.....(why
didn't I use the hot air gun, I did it wasn't working fast enough, but
it was working)
Well needless to say I got about 30 seconds of heating it up and
POOF!!!!! HOLY CRAP!!!! Black smoke rising, tripping over the dog, and
grabbing the bucket of soapy water that I used yesterday to wipe down
the cabinet and throwing it all over the playfield only caused the
flame to roll to the underside of the playfiled! Now I'm dousing it
out with a rag trying to blow out the remains of the flames and the
fuel slick accumulating in the bottom by the coin tray.
Aired the house out, friggin' freezing now! Stripped the playfield
bare in the hopes of doing an overlay or who knows anybody have a
playfield for sale? God I'm stupid! Lets just say at this point Jesus
wouldn't be playing my High Speed!
Did I mention I'm stupid?!?!?!? Mr. coil sleeves ain't got nothing on
me! I wonder if home-owners insc. will cover this? I hope I don't have
a dummy clause.
Excuse me I have to go to bed now and cry myself to sleep....

P.S. Did I mention I'm STUPID?!?!?!?!?

P.S. Don't be afraid to do another Mylar removal -- but you've gotta try the
freeze spray method -- you'll be amazed (but don't rush it). Then use
*only* Goo Gone to remove the glue -- just give it plenty of time to soften
the glue, and plenty of elbow grease and towels.

Also shows if you have a workbench or room you work in,
put the material in 2 parts:
- the non-harmful tools you regulary use: have them by hand
- all other tools which may be harmful and which you shouldn't use
for cleaning/shopping a pin: lock them up, keep them in another room,
somewhere out of sight.
This way you won't be grabbing something 'lets try this' because you
see it and don't think about the causes. Each time you'll have to get
something like this, the extra effort of unlocking/.. should make you
think if you really need it and why.

If an item gets a lot of bids on Ebay, it's regarded as 'hot' and a

I'd like to take a moment to plug the two most important things in
_my_ shop:
1) Working smoke detector IN THAT ROOM
2) Working (and charged!) fire extinguisher IN THAT ROOM
No proper pinball tech/collector should be without EITHER of these!
Even if you never have to use them, there's always the chance that you
_might_ have to. (And no sharing extinguishers between the kitchen
and the pinball room; they're cheap enough that you should buy one for
each!)

Now I'd call your insurance agent and see if you are covered. And if you get a

Boy, I'd sure like to hear *that* conversation. I imagine it would go something
like this:
Agent - "So let me get this straight Eric... first you drenched this machine in
lighter fluid and then you took a blowtorch to it."
Eric - "Yep."
Agent - "And when you hit the machine with the blowtorch it burst into flames."
Eric - "Yep."
Agent - "And you think the ensuing fire was an 'accident' or a 'act of God' that
should be covered by your policy?"
Eric - "Yep."
Agent - "Well Eric, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask you to leave my office right
now and to never contact me again... is that understood?"
Eric - "Yep."
Uh! I'm not even going to ask... ;)

Eric, buddy, pal-o'-mine. I just want to thank you for sharing both
your story and your pics.
When I read your story, I was greatly saddened. I know it hurts like
bamboo under the fingernails when something like this happens, and you
just wish that you were an ostrich, so that you could quite easily
bury your head in the sand. As I read your story, I felt pain for
you. When I saw the pics, I looked at the before pic first,
obviously. You're right...that's one *very* nice HS playfield there.
I again went into "grieving for a friend's loss" mode.
However, when I saw that after pic, I nearly laughed myself into
various stages of coronary seizure! Oh my gosh, Eric, I'm telling
you, it may be a costly error, but the *mileage* you can get out of
that story with those *pics* is just unfathomable. I'm *still*
laughing at that picture. Your story didn't provide enough detail
into just how badly the playfield got burned...I thought that there
may have been some damage that took the playfield from "Near-mint' to
"Just okay". Rather, that little fire did enough damage to take that
playfield from "Near-mint" to "Got snot-slinging drunk and gave it to
my little brother's Cub Scout group so that they could make s'mores
over it on their weekend camping trip to Lake Woebegone". That's a
category that I don't even think has been *invented* until you came
along! I'm *really* not trying to pour salt in the wound here, Eric.
I'm *trying* to help you see JUST HOW STINKING FUNNY this really is.
I mean, yeah, I might not see it as humorously on your side of the
fence, but trust me...you're going to look back at that playfield
(you're *never* going to let yourself sell it or trash it...it's just
too good...) and laugh your face off in the not-too-distant future.
Eric, my friend, I feel some of your pain, and I'm dreadfully sorry
that this happened. However, I'm *so glad* that you shared this with
us. It's a painful reminder, but it's *also* one humdinger of a
*great* pinball story.
Don't be surprised if you get a call from Clay asking if he can use
your playfield in a future TOP tape as an example of what happens
"When Things Go Wrong". I understand that Fox is doing a special on
it pretty soon.
Good luck, Eric. Thanks again.
