I've been after Gary to build LOTR again.

He has no "toys" - he can do Balrog, etc. but not the little stuff.

Price will be like $4699.00......so who missed it and who would want a
NIB??

It would be a small run and Quality Control would be high.....like
collector games if I have my way......probably only ordered by me and
Mikey at Automated.....

Comments??

Who ever buys one could scrounge the toys on Ebay. So toys shouldn't be a
reason to not make a run of them.

Any chance for a painted backglass instead of translite, like BSM ? That
would get things going. LTG :)

Tell Gary he should have let me pick up a 24 and haul to the Midwest Gaming
Classic and then return it after the show. I was only a couple hours away.
There wasn't one there, and there should have been. With me helping it
wouldn't have cost them anything but the game for a couple days. LTG :)

I'm thinking - This Summer - If we can work it out, I would do pre-
orders and the whole run would be sold before it was even built like I
did with Platinum Monopoly in 2001......maybe the game is in Gold
rails, trim, legs (?) I'm really looking for comments from the people
who will order one.

I missed out too, so I want a new one as well!!

Jack -

Think about this 20 Rings:

3 Elf Rings
7 Dwarf Rings
9 Man Rings
1 to rule them all

Kinda like Monopoly with the places.... Or you could do the different
settings in the world of Middle Earth: IE The Shire, Mordor etc

Not sure how many you looking to run. 1000 or 100

Otherwise - You could do the side rails in GOLD and have the Elvish
righting along the sides of it engraved... For the shooter you can do
a crystal ball with the One ring inside...

I think it would be great if they could adapt the boards to the new
S.A.M. system. That would definatly set them apart from the original
couple of production runs, but keep the board components current with
todays technology. Also a red led display like 24 would be nice!!

Spider-man black has the chrome package, shaker motor, mirrored
backglass. A shaker motor for the Balrog would be cool. Mirrored
backglass, and brass colored side rails and legs depending on price
for this special addition would be awesome.

Real backglass, siderails with an elvish twist, elvish runes on
lockdown bar, super glossy playfield finish, special ed. coin door
sticker, nice key fob, improved slingshot plastics(that shouldn't be
too difficult) custom shooter knob, add some artwork to the speaker
panel(now I'm dreaming) Don't worry about the action figures, that
cost is better spent elsewhere. MattyB.

I'll triple agree with Donnie. I love my HUO one, but would upgrade
if the differences are worth it. $4700 would be a little steep, i'd
need a lot of advance notice to gather the funds for that project. I

Hallo Gary!

I am wondering about your post for LOTR.

Stern planed to re-run TSPP 12-2008
and then Gary told us in London that this is canceld
because the US collector market is absolutly down
and the games cannot be xportet to europe (ROHS)
so i will get not the quantity for a realistic re-run.

and now with LOTR this should be better?

may be you can give us some infos

I would seriously consider it also (depending on price). I'd like to
see the collectors version be numbered, use the new SAM system circuit

If the Collector's LOTR was different and truly limited , then yes I
would be interested. If it was a LOTR with just gold rails, then no.
Some of the ideas above are great, like

Engraved/printed side rails
Painted backglass
Shaker motor

Also;
Gold Sword rail (not sure why this was silver as all the other rails
were gold)
A limited edition plate (like Adams Gold) with number.

I realize that all the stuff above adds cost, but I would imagine you
would get more interest in the new LOTR if it was truly a Limited
edition.

Good luck Jack, thanks for pushing Gary :)

I want one here in Belgium:

no small toys, new slingshot artwork
path of the death: first edition artwork
golden siderails (old style) golden lockdownbar (without hole for a
butto) golden legs
plate with limited edition, all machines have their own number like
TAFgold
don't change the cab artwork...
new-style flipperunits for strong flippers
new apron-stickers with gold-artwork
"real lights" behind translite with bulbs, flashers etc...

Capt. Jack,

These are the things that would make me jump at one NIB, gold rails,

I will add my name to the list of a number of items here...

1. If it is special limited collectors edition, with unique serial
numbers and some real differences, then definitely interested.
2. SAM would be nice, but I know that may be too much technical re-
engineering than Gary may want to do. But, if it can be done, then
that would be great.
3. Cabinet artwork is awesome, so don't change that. Also, make sure
you don't change the gameplay itself as that is what makes LoTR great.

Great idea if only collector edition !

gold parts are easy to change on normal LOTR edition...
if you compare with the BSD, cab decals and translite are differents
so gold parts, number plated , cab decals and translite with many
changes will be for this great title a special edition !

Seems like converting to the SAM system would be a lot of engineering
work and kill any possible profit to be made on such a limited run.
Not just software either. The hardware would (obviously) have to
change a lot too. Creating new engineering drawings and factory build
fixtures costs a lot more than one might think. There would have to
be a lot of people from Europe interested to make that worth
while...

Didn't Stern have a SAM version of Sopranos up and running as a
prototype?

As for buying one... I'm not in. I'd rather buy someone's HUO
machine when they sell it to get the collector's edition.

I own a HUO original and would consider a new one with some upgrades.
A Balrog shaker, gold siderails and lockdown. I'm not sure about the
new siderails in gold with the big button protector - a little
overwhelming in gold?? It would be really cool to laser etch the "one
ring" text into the lockdown bar or something. A high quality clear
for the playfield would be good also and a good diverter or protector
for the mini playfield drop like the after market ones. I don't care
about the figures so much - they could be there or not. I also have
the changing color LED under the palantir globe which is cool. How
about upgraded sound also - subwoofer, etc?

It's my favorite new Stern game so I may give it a shot if the price
wasn't too far out there. It would be a nice collectible.

Why does everybody want a special edition? All it does is increase the
cost. What is wrong with making the original version? I'm all for
tweaking the gameplay and having the new system but I wouldn't want to
pay extra to have a plaque and gold rails.

Either way I would love to see Gary produce it again, I thought he
hinted at doing this at the TPF speech. Now the real question is which
version would he sell more of, a collectors edition or the original
improved version?

What Donnie said goes for me, too. And mine's already been pimped
with gold trim and legs. I'd want the shaker and the mirrored

I too am interested, but will withhold sending payment (even if it is
refundable) until I can know more definitively what this collector's
edition will contain. I like many of the suggestions being offered by
others:

Real backglass/mirrored backglass
chrome package
shaker motor
limited edition plate
update to SAM boardset (realize this isn't going to be pratctical)
Special 'Gold' ROM

I'd like to know how limited the edition is truly going to be too.
Depending on what the final package shakes out at I'm either all in
for one, or else I'm going to use this time to snag one of the HUO
that is going to come up for sale. Either way, I finally see getting
a LOTR.

I would not be interested in buying one, simply because I don't like
the game and the theme.
However, upgrading the game to SAM system (with better sound quality
samples and more variation in the soundcalls) would be a big plus.

The main reason for replying: I strongly believe if Stern would rerun
the game and do a proper marketing campaign aiming at LOTR fans
worldwide (who hardly have a clue the game even exists) he might very
well outsell the current number of games with the new run. A limited
luxery edition could be an option as well.

As I spoke with Gary a few months ago and the subject came up his
answer to marketing was "there is no budget for advertising". Please
point out to Gary there are other ways tot promote his games with do
not have to cost much. Basically posting overhere and getting plenty
reactions is also marketing in a form Stern has not considered (as far
as I know).

I'm still not buying the game, but I do wish Stern the sales they
could have and such a popalr theme should have.

...but seriously, I'm curious as to what this machine might actually
be. Honestly I like the figures and Arwin plastic on my 2005
LOTR ....but if there was a real backglass, a gold rom w/ shaker
support, a shaker, and some kind of special trim....I dunno man, I
might bite. Get 'em to do white rubber, Pinbits protectors & red
Cliffy post sleeves at the factory so I don't have to tear it apart

I don't get it. If you can afford NIB pins, why would you "withhold"
a deposit that's fully refundable from a known-good entity like Jack?
People, the more deposits he gets, the more likely this is to happen.
Period, end of story. Feel free to send your comments on what you
want to see before you'll finish the deal, but if you think there's
a good chance Stern will do what you are interested in, send him
the money! It's $100 for crying out loud. Jack's good for it if you
want it back.

And for those of you wanting it to have the new Sam system, I think
you can forget that. Best case it's some dress up cabinet stuff. I
hope it has a better backglass, too, and is numbered. I'll be pretty
stoked if that's the case.

Some good ideas in this!

I would be interested in a true collector re-run with:

1. Upgrade to SAM system. This is a MUST to combat the crappy flipper
mush that happens on hour+ games to get thre and back again.

2. Forget the elven writing on the side rails and lockdown, stick the
Elven runes on Aragorn's sword lock! That would tie in better to the
movie. Make the sword lock solid metal with a groove in it (aka
Aragorn's actual sword), and use leds or EL tape to light up the runes
from below briefly as each ball is locked. That would be HOT and
would add collector value to the machine. It would not be hard to do.
A little metal work, a little addition to the code to handle the
lighting.

3. Make the front trim on the head one nice complete piece instead of
four chopped up straight pieces. I've always thought that looked
extremely tacky.

4. Add in some cliffy-style stuff from the factory to protect edges at
known wear spots.

1, 2, 3 are the ones that would really get things moving for me on a
$4500+ machine. 4 is nice, but would just be gravy.

I AGAIN agree with Donnie. It's only a good thing to send the deposit
if you think that you are interested in buying a game. The more
deposits, the more likely this will be to go through. Money talks in
the eyes of Stern these days I would think.

Deposit send!

I picked up a HOU LOTR last year and really enjoy it. Would I buy a
collectors edition? Nah. While I'm a collector, I can't see spending
top dollar for different colors, or engraved plaques, etc. The
gameplay is what I'm after - it already is nice looking. That being
said, I respect the ultra collector mentality. For me, hard to
justify the extra money for a plaque that makes me feel special cause
only a certain number of us have the plaque.

But, I also think this pin should be re-run to give others a chance to
add it to their collection - real fun game and opportunity for Stern
to make some money. If they do re-run the pin in collector quality,
they should consider a plaqueless upgrade pack - to pimp out your
original LOTR. Easy money it would seem.

I would be interested depending on what the limited edition package
consisted of. If it's just different trim/side-rails/translite. I
wouldn't be interested but if it included things like a shaker motor,
updated software and toys, different artwork, etc. It would be much
easier to justify the premium price over buying a HUO non-limited
version which should be easier/cheaper to find. Either way I hope
these get made because I want to add a LOTR to my collection soon!

You can as a replacement, but extremely limited. I think they only made ten

Luckily, I have one already and don't need the collector's edition.
Now if anybody would have suggested putting a second software option
in the menu so that you could boot LOTR original gameplay or LOTR
collector gameplay, I'd be thinking really hard right now. I'm sure
that would significantly increase the costs and would probably not be
in alignment with the licensing deal, but hey we can all wish right?
It would be pretty cool if some reissue editions came with new code
sets for altered gameplay.

I definitely see the logic in how this helps keep our favorite
producer of pins running in tough times, so I'll spread the word on
it. Jack, did you ever think about having a preorder for new/
alternate software for older games (even Williams)? Maybe we could
take preorders via paypal to fund some of our favorite pin designers
to work up new ROM's/with new rule sets as side projects.

Finally, thanks for the 24 this weekend. What an awesome,
challenging game with great software.

At TPF, I believe Gary did say the license expired, but he didn't think it
would be hard to get another small run licensed. He questioned whether
people would want one or not due to inability to source the figures. I'm
paraphrasing.

Jack,

Here is hoping that we can see some sort of software update for those
of us that already own one. Actually, not sure what could be improved
in the software.

I have a HUO LOTR but would be glad to see more LOTRs run. The more
the merrier. I don't think it will affect the value of existing games
negatively.

If anything, the hype and popularity of this great game will only
increase its value.

If the new game was significantly better (SAM system with new sounds/
graphics) then the originals could take a hit in value - but I HIGHLY
doubt there will be any changes other than cosmetic ones.

Also have a complete set of spare figures :)
