I had a similar issue with a Space Mission and it ended up being a wire
shorted out underneath the jones plug sockets in the backbox.

Thank you, I will definaley give that a good look. I'll let you know
what I find...

It ended up being one of the bare G.I. wires touching one of the socket
tabs.

Check the 1000 point switches real close.
I checked them all again, all 1000 point switches are good. Besides if
it was one of the 1000 point switches then when you hit one of the
other 1000 point switches it wouldn't score properly but as I said
they all score properly...
Tom
Are you checking the 1,000 point relay? One pair of contacts on it fires
the chime coil.
Follow this procedure to find the problem:
Does the 1,000 chime energize as soon as the game is turned on, or only
after the game is started but the ball has not been put into play?
If the chime is on as soon as the game is turned on then you have a
short in the wiring - it should not have power until the Game Over relay
is cleared.
If the chime is only on after the game is started, but the ball has not
been played, then try this - turn the game on, start the game, reels all
turn to '0', DO NOT SHOOT THE BALL, now if the chime is active turn the
game off. Does the 1,000 drum advance to '1' and the other drums stay
all at '0'? Then you have a stuck switch somewhere on the playfield or a
relay that switches between 100 and 1,000 points has a problem.
If the 1,000 drum stays on '0' when the power is turned off, then you
likely have a problem with the 1,000 point relay - the chime blade
switch contacts or the wire terminals for the blade switches are closed.
If you can't see the problem try unsoldering one wire to the 1,000 point
relay chime blade switch pair. Now the chime should do nothing.
If the chime is STILL active when you start the game then there is a
short somewhere in the cabinet wiring...follow the wires from the 1,000
point chime coil to the 1,000 point relay.

John:
I will try your suggestions tonight and see what I come up with. The
chime is active as soon as you turn the game on in game over mode and
stays that way in game as well. I'll let you know what I find...
Thank you for your help, all good ideas
Tom
Well like I said check the relay in the back of the head too.
I did look at the relay and the switches and they look ok, but I think
I might have to find the wire that goes from that relay to the 1000
point chime and disconnect it at the relay as John suggested. Then if
I'm still getting voltage at the chime that wire is shorted somewhere
before it gets to the relay. It it is I can run a new wire and be done
with it. I'll report back when I finally figure this out.
Thanks for all the suggestions,
Tom
Well I checked everything, and was about to give up when I looked a
little closer at the jones plug that connects the chime unit in the
bottom of the cabinet. It looked ok but on closer inspection it had
this kind of clear mess all over the top like some kind of weird
solder flux someone used somewhere along the line anyway I cleaned all
this up and reconnected it and whallah! Started the game and the coil
wasn't stuck on! It's working fine now! I don't know for sure because
I disconnected and reconnected all the jones plugs tonight as well but
nothing seemed to make a difference until I cleaned up this connector
and now all is working. Oh and the gottlieb chime coil A-5195 works
fine subbing for an A26-1300.
Yippee! My New to Me Aztec is working 100%
What a great Friday present! And I still have plenty of time to drink
some celebratory beers!
I want to thank each and everyone that chimed in (pun intended) to fix
my stuck chime issue!
