I have no computer skills. None. Well, barely any but certainly not programming.

Anyway, I'm willing to buy someone a P-ROC board if they can write or add new code for Tales of the Arabian Nights and share it. I love the game as it is but a code update would enhance this already wonderful game.

What Eric Priepke has done with Cactus Canyon is a marvel and I thank him again for his hard work and extreme generosity. My Cactus Canyon is like a new machine.

I have already informed Gerry Stellenberg of P-ROC and he know of my intentions.
Any works in progress on TOTAN welcomed. Other game titles in my collection considered.

Board will be provided including free shipping after the work is completed.

Thanks,

Kim

Nice of you to offer this Kim. I take it Eric isn't interested? From
what I hear CC came out great.

Eric doesn't own a TOTAN. But he did offer to do the code if I bought him the game. :)

1st, you are amazing! It's offers like this that will push the hobby
forward, and the business raping backwards and forwards (for folks that
are open, honest and allow community participation and not pig
capitalistic limited exclusivity).

4K is an average, at 30% Bullshit FleeceBay discount its still 2800
bucks for a 'month' of work to do the hack. 168 hours, or maybe 200 if
you call it a love of the art and community work. Can someone, some
idiot, some p-Cock programmer come up with 20 bucks an hour for the
effort? Nights, maybe weekends?

Sounds reasonable, maybe a kick-start in the community project?

I will take you up on this offer, Kim. However, your TOTAN will play
more like R911 when I'm done. I hope this works for you.

Excellent, Greg. I also have No Good Gofers on my list as well. Many other titles also.

Maybe once Eric finishes (LOL, he keeps adding cool stuff, he'll never
*really* be finished!), someone could start a Kickstarter campaign for a
given game title. For example, if Eric indeed wanted a TOTAN machine to
do the coding, set up a campaign to raise $6K or so. If the goal is
met, Eric gets the money and he could buy his own machine for the project.

Of course, once the code is finished, only people that donated to the
Kickstarter would get the new code. It would be up to those people not
to share it. If you want to fully protect it, the code could be dongle
protected with something like Aladdin Systems (fitting for TOTAN!).

Just some thoughts. I know I'd throw in some serious cash to Kickstart
a new Scared Stiff game by Eric. I could even hire Cassandra to do new
sound bites...

Hey Robert

I considered a Kickstarter and think its a good thought. But my best idea, IMHO, is that PinballControllers set up a library where the authors of new code could sell their work along with each sale of a P-ROC board. It's win, win, win as far as I'm concerned with guys like me being the third winner.

On the other hand there may be some legal gray areas concerning copyright I'm not thinking through here.... Meh, I'm a selfish end user and want what I want.

I am someone who is creating a game with P-roc, but in my case I am doing a custom game from scratch.

To do what Eric and others have done with an existing game is not just writing new code, you first need to replicate all the existing code/functionality exactly as it plays.

I've talked with Eric a few times and he thinks doing a custom game is harder, while I still think re-creating a game is harder, given the expectation that it first plays correctly and then has the new bells and whistles.

While doing a custom game you also have to design a playfield, rules, art, sound, dots, etc. you don't have to live up to expectations of others. But I guess, it is all how you look at it. Just looking at the sound files used by CC makes me queasy thinking about figuring how exactly when all those sounds are supposed to get played and what dots need to go with it, get that timing right, etc. I guess I just like the freedom of doing what I want and the creativity that goes with it.

Either way the P-roc is awesome as far as opening the door to so many possibilities. There are several really cool projects going on.

What would be really cool would be a translator to convert events from
the existing code to Proc code, or a proc simulator of the WPC code
where you can trap events and make them do something different.
Re-creating the code would be very, very, difficult, as you point out.

Probably better to do a "inspired by" type of re-make.
