OT: Yet another POTC thread, rode the "new" Disney ride

Battled the teeming masses of sweaty tourists to visit the "happiest
place on earth" last night, and I must tell you, the new and improved
Pirates of the Carribbean was well worth the 50 minute wait to get on.
Take this with a grain of salt, I loved the original POTC, loved the
movies, and willl hopefully love the Stern pin. Also, being an annual
passholder, it's easy for me to slip into the park after work, spend an
hour or two, and go home. I don't know if I could handle 10 to 12
hours being crammed like a sardine into every attraction after an hour
and a half wait, or being hustled through every walkway in 90 degree
heat, with a humidity that brings to mind the jungles of Da Nang. So
if you are crowd-phobic, heat-phobic, or B.O.-phobic, you're best to
wait till the off season. If there ever is one at Disneyland.
So, here's the report, read no futher if spoilers ye don't want to be
hearin'. I ran into OC pinball league regulars Brent and Laura on Main
Street. What's up guys! Got into line halfway down the Rivers of
America, close to the Steamboat loading area. This is during the half
hour running up to Fantasmic, the huge nighttime fireworks/stunt/song
and dance spectacular. The line moved quickly, and I was inside the
air-conditioned Carribbean in short order. Most of the ride has
remained unchanged, though everything was given a fresh coat of paint.
And every single effect, including some I haven't seen working in
years, was working perfectly. There were a few new props here and
there, including a skeletal parrot in the captain's quarters and the
"Aztec gold" treasure chest from the first pirates film in the treasure
room. Right before you roll into the big Spanish galleon/fort cannon
battle, there is a "waterfall". It's actually a machine laying out a
sheet of fog, but it's a convincing effect. Projected on this fog is a
CGI Davey Jones. The pirate, not the Monkee. It is dope, and worth
the price of admission by itself. During the cannon battle, you can
hear the score from the POTC film, and the pirate ship is now helmed by
bad guy Barbossa, who yells stuff at the yokels like "We be lookin' for
Captain Jack Sparrow!" as well as some other pirate jive. Jack makes
his first appearance in the next scene, with the mayor dangling in the
well. While the pirates interrogate poor Carlos, Jack hides behind
some swag. Carlos' wife is still there. ("Don't be cheekin!")
Captain Sparrow also appears behind the drunk pirate, hidden away in
the barrel previously occupied by a girl, and later, a cat. (when
Disney dropped the whole "rape" angle.) He makes a last appearance at
the end of the ride, replacing the two pirates hauling treasure uphill.
He sits on a throne, surrounded by treasure, and drinking from a
golden goblet. He's also been given some dialogue here, singing "Yo
Ho", and throwing out clever little bits of pirate speak.
All in all, the ride looks and sounds better than ever, sound has been
beefed up so all sound effects, music, and dialog can be clearly heard.
And the so-called "overlay" of elements from the film was done
seamlessly, no small feat considering this attraction is pushing 40
years old. I say, go do it! But beware the crowds, I warned you about
the crowds!
So now I think it's official. I have started at least as many POTC
threads as Derek. Hopefully, now that he is on the Spidey 3 tip
already, I will actually surpass him!

Now we need to hear the report from Orlando as they were getting
the same refurb. they have some different scenes then Disney land.
The wife and I will be down in September this year looking forward
to playing POTC and riding on the new POTC.

Thanks for the description. I am glad they refurbished the ride, but
somehow really sad that they have added characters from the movies.
It's just not the same as it used to be... it's a "New Coke" feeling
for me. I grew up in SoCal so I have been on the ride MANY times over
the years.
