OT Farewell Dad

Alzheimer's Disease and we managed to keep him at home until the end
of October, when he had a tumble and had to go into hospital.
Fortunately, we got him out of there a week last Thursday into a
lovely care home at Holme Pierrepoint, by the River Trent. He was
comfortable and cosy there, and well looked after. I was able to see
him nearly every day and got to spend time with him on Christmas Eve
with little Harry, my 2 year old and also yesterday on Christmas Day.
He was an excellent cartoonist in his spare time, and made a bit of
money selling them to national newspapers including the Daily Mirror.
Back on topic, he would have done some incredible Pinball art if he'd
had the opportunity - his work was a cross between Art Stenholm and
Margaret Hudson's on Mr & Mrs Pac-Man.

lost my dad when I was 16 thats how I actually got into pinball, I
could play it alone and those special games made my worries drift away
for a few minutes here and there and to this day still think about him
and wish he was here
Im sure your family is strong and will pull through these hard times,
he will always be watching over you

I am sorry to hear of your lost. It is easy to tell from your words,
how much you cared for and about him.
My DOD (Dear Old Dad, as we called him) passed away Nov 2, 2005.
Seems like yesterday. I miss and think of him every day.

been gone five years, and I was getting ready to go over to my step-
mom's house for Christmas. Always makes me very sad to go there.
Just miss him so much.

I am very sorry for your loss. My Father passed away Nov. 9 and my
life has changed completely. We would go out for breakfast a few times
a week and attempt to solve the worlds problems. My Dad would say "Top
O' The Morning!" to everyone he met. Friend or stranger. Rich or poor.
Over 400 people attended his funeral. I doubt that 10% of that many
people would attend my funeral. The Brentwood, Missouri fire
department had two fire trucks with ladders raised in front of his
business. The firefighters stood in front, saluting. The police
blocked off both directions of traffic as the funeral prosession
stopped in front of the building.
My Dad was very instrumental in forging my pinball future when he
bought a Gtb. Cover Girl and Sweethearts back in 1965. The games are
still sitting in their original spots in his basement.
My Dad was an original and there is no one to replace him.
Give your parents a big hug everytime you see them. They will be gone
someday and you may miss the chance.
By the way, for those that do not believe in an afterlife, 2 weeks
after my Father died, my Mother and I went to purchase a gravestone.
We picked one out and the salesperson went to type up the order. While
we were waiting, my Mother opened a three ring binder that was on the
table. The page she turned to had a series of illustrations depicting
various wedding date add ons that could be put on the monument. One
had a drawing of a pair of wedding rings with the wedding date carved
through the rings. The sample wedding date was September 9,
1950................The day my parents were married. We added that
illustration to the monument. Ned......................

13 years ago and I am 33 years old. Wife's parents then moved about
800 miles away a few years ago as well. So, we had no parents around
for christmas this year. Kind of sad. I got into pinball about 5
years after my dad died. He worked in a machine shop so it would have
been awesome to fix up games with him. They built coils and repaired
engines so he probably would have loved tinkering with this stuff. I
always wonder what he would have thought about this hobby? Wish we
could have enjoyed them together. My thoughts go out to everyone who
lost someone this year. It definitely never gets an easier. Brad

This hit a chord with me- as my Dad was put in an Alzheimer's home
about 6 months ago, and while I was able to say "goodbye" to him last
summer, he no longer recognizes me or even responds to visitors in any
way. It was a sad Christmas, indeed- big ole' empty spot at the table

I believe in coincidences! Spooky ones are cool. Synchronicity. But I
don't see any way that this anecdote would be evidence of an
afterlife. But then, neither is anything else, it's all wishful
thinking, indoctrination and altered states of consciousness. It does
suck that people have to die. Here we are, bits of the universe
evolved to self-awareness, and we only get to partake in the wonder
for the blink of an eye.
So I offer my condolences as well, to the OP, Ned, and everyone else
who has lost their father or any loved one for that matter.

You guys may be 'over the pond', but the wonderful world wide web
(hey, kids, that's what www stands for) brings you so close to me and
my family. I have three boys, Jack, 9, Sam, 6 and Harry, 2, thanks to
Lynda, my wife. She dealt with the challenge of Breast Cancer this
time last year and is healthy and well.
On topic, my Mummy & Daddy took me along to the 'Duke of Sussex' pub
when I was young, maybe between the ages of 7-10. I had to wait in the
chilly entrance/exit hallway and there was always a pinball machine
operating on old sixpence pieces (tanners) which I used to get to
play, and watch the grown-ups have a go.
Wow, how incredible that it's a big circular, synchronised, connected
world out there, if only we look.

It's never easy to say goodbye to someone you've cherished your entire
life. I lost my mother 3 1/2 years ago. She loved birds, and
especially Cardinals. This Christmas morning, a very showy male
Cardinal was outside the window just a few feet away, munching on some
berrys. I wondered if Mom had sent him.
Cherish the memories Spike and I offer my prayers.
