I've got a Gorgar that boots in audit mode (04 00) after changing
batteries. I've got proper voltage from batteries , D17 (in and out)
and to 5101. I reset 04 18 to 00 but there is no memory of reset.
What do I do next?!?!

Just had this issue with my Firepower after changing the batteries.
First, per clays guides, try turning the power switch off/on rapidly a
few times. Initially it didn't work as I forgot to open the coin door
open. Once I opened the coin door and cycled the power it worked
perfectly.
The specific reference is as listed below.

(Battery/5101 RAM Problems)
Dead batteries (or worse, dead corroded batteries) will cause problems
getting a system4 to system7 game to power-up properly. On these
games, if the batteries are dead, the game can still boot, but will
come up in "audit" mode (system3 games do not have this boot-up audit
mode). To get to attract mode, turn the game off and on again quickly.
If done fast enough, the game should come up in attract mode. Note on
System6 and System7 games, the coin door *must* be open for this to
work (memory protection switch open).
If the game still doesn't come up in attract mode, even with the "turn
it off and on quickly" trick, the CMOS 5101 RAM chip at IC19 is
probably bad.
Please refer back to the Batteries and Battery Holders section for
more information on this subject, including how to test the batteries,
blocking diode D17, and the CMOS 5101 RAM at IC19.

Another trick that should work if switching off/on quickly doesn't:
Reset to factory defaults and zero audits.
Open the coin door and the backbox. Coin door MUST be open for this to
work. Turn on game, you get 04 Audit mode.
Press the diag switch on the MPU board (lower pushbutton). The LEDs
should blink twice and displays go out.
Set all command switches to the RIGHT (off). Only set top switch #7
LEFT.
Press the top button called Master Command ENTER once briefly. Leds
blink once and go out.
Set switch #7 back to off. Power off the game.
This part is important. Close the coin door. Turn the game off and
back on TWICE.
The second time off/on you should get game over / attract mode.
If that procedure won't clear the game, you probably have another
fault with your MPU board or the memory protect circuit. As stated
before, the 5101 could be faulty.

I have the same machine, and as time goes on, it gets more and more
finicky. I've found that unplugging the machine and disconnecting all
of the cables to the boards in the back box including the two boards
that connect together and then plugging them all back together tends
to resolve most of my issues. Just remember to label cables to where
they go. :)
wms system 6 and 7 MPU are notorious for bad 5101's Honestly I dont
think I have too many come across my bench the 5101 wasnt bad. Remove
the old one, socket it and swap in a new one.
Also from memory the switch on the coin door opening (mem protect
switch) could be dirty or not working...
Thanks for the replies. Richard we tried your procedure and the
lights don't blink at all, they stay on. Any clue what that means?
Also, I didn't mention earlier so I will now, that we just picked up
the game in this condition. It had been sitting with dead batteries.
Don't know that it matters as we did all the power checks I did
mention. Just didn't want to mislead as if the machine had been
working and this was a sudden thing.

Have you replaced the battery holder along with the batteries? Most
likely you will need to...
Did not change the battery hldr, but would the voltage register normal
if that was necessary? Cuz it is normal at the holder, the D17 and to
the 5101 chip. I'm suspecting the chip at this point because the
audit settings can be changed but they don't save to memory. How can
I know if the chip is bad or not?

Both LEDs stay lit when diag is pressed? Definite sign of an IC19
CMOS RAM failure. Everyone said this and you proved it on your game.
You have to put in socket strips and then replace the 5101. Just cut
the old one out and then remove the legs one by one. The board is
worth more than a chip.

socketed version ordered from GPE and Gorgar is up and running! You
