I'm no right winger, but looks like I'm an equal opportunity rude
motherf*cker!

I say merry christmas around christmas, to pretty much everyone.

I say happy hanukkah around hanukkah, to pretty much everyone.

I even sometimes feel extra goofy and say happy kwanza. Though since I
don't really know when kwanza is I just place it randomly in December
whenever I'm not being rude to people about christmas or hanukkah.

So Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, bitches! :)

(Thinking more about it... when is Ramadan, anyway?)

I usually make an effort not to reply, nor create, off topic posts, but I am
presuming this OT post is aimed at me...

First of all, I am NOT a "right winger", so bah humbug to your presumptuous
ways!

Secondly, I knew that a few, dear pinball acquaintances would see my
message, and hoped I would get favorable responses (which I have).

Thirdly, I (as opposed to you) remained on topic. Just because you state
'off topic' in your post does not grant you license to offend.

Finally, if you think the health care reform passed today is a panacea, you
are grossly mistaken. It may be a step in the correct direction, but as an
American physician I have legitimate doubts.

Happy Festivus!

might not have any religious beliefs at all and this is is just
another month to them. for me its not so much about christ as it is
the one time a year that everyone puts their differences aside and
actually wish each other well. if that doesnt work for you we all can

Now the original posters who started this firefight on this and any
related thread only want attention on themselves and create this drama
to draw your attention off of the joy of the holidays whatever your
personal reasons may be for celebrating so please don't forget that
and enjoy.
fyi Christmas wasn't even a Christian holiday originally. If anyone
really knew who was born on Dec 25th shame would hang heavy on the
faithful and ignorant who celebrate blindly. Most of our Christian
holidays actually fall on the pagan calender "holidays". Why do you
think Easter is full of symbols of fertilty that have nothing to do
with God but rather the pagan goddess of fertility. The rabbit and egg
hunt.It originally had nothing to do with the crucifixion and
reserection of Christ. Sadly the church has adopted these dates to
coincide with the commercial popularity of these events to help sell
people on the church and religon.
However I DO have my faith and am aware I celebrate my "Christian"
holidays in my praise of our creator and savior even though they do
fall on the original pagan calender of events. As any day is a good
day to appreciate the blessings and sacrifice of the one true God
almighty. It is above all where your heart is.
Merry Christmas to all and God Bless. -jimmy
also -in the old testament it specically addresses not to dress and
adorn trees which we do with Christmas and the crucifix itself. So
remember to praise Jesus Christ not the symbols.

This argument is silly, and shouldn't have anything to do with left or
right wingers (or healthcare). The holiday is called Christmas,
therefore saying "Merry Christmas" is logical and appropriate. It
looks like the OP has since deleted his post - apparently he realized
the absurdity of his statement.

Therein lies the problem with short sighted folks. There is a holiday
called Christmas that many of us (both religious and non-religious)
celebrate. There is also Chanukah/Hanukkah which is an entirely
different holiday for a different group of folks. Of course, Kwanzaa
is yet still another holiday for another group.

I don't personally believe that wishing someone "Merry Christmas" is
offensive or rude but realize you are only speaking to a particular
subset of people (even though they make up a majority of the
audience).

For those who take it personally when someone wishes you a Merry
Christmas, just reply with a greeting for YOUR holiday (or non-
holiday):

Fred: Merry Christmas Barney

Barney: Happy Hanukkah Fred!

or

Oscar: Happy Kwanzaa Felix!

Felix: Happy Festivus Oscar!

I try to sidestep the nonsense and use the generic "Happy Holidays!"
to avoid the inclusion or exclusion of anyone who may celebrate in
some other manner.

I agree there are plenty of other holidays around the end of December,
and throughout the rest of the year. However, the official holiday
here in the United States is "Christmas."

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_and_how_did_Christmas_become_an_official_government_holiday

Through tradition, luck or whatever, the Christians have gotten
Jesus's birthday enshrined as an official government holiday,
therefore "Merry Christmas" is as appropriate as any other greeting
IMHO. Of course people are free to celebrate however they want, and
whichever actual holiday suits their religious beliefs... but I can't
agree that saying "Merry Christmas" to a stranger is wrong. To me,
it's no different than saying "Happy Fourth of July" or the like.
Attempting to change Dec 25th to some generic holiday, or trying to
take that holiday away from Christians, is counterproductive and rude
IMHO.

The ONLY thing I hate about Christmas is Mass. I refuse to go around
shaking hands with a bunch of strangers, most them drunk, in the sign
of peace. Stick to the ceremony and leave the hand shakes out. Saying
Merry Christmas is fine. It's a well wish. No one is trying to
convert anyone.

I don't think so. It has something to do with this little document
called THE CONSTITUTION, which says "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion". Therefore state-sanctioned
religious displays are a violation of the separation of church and
state, and unconstitutional.

I like how you suggest that liberalism is opposite christianism, which
is bogus. Jesus himself was pretty much a liberal socialist according
to the bible. The ignorance you people have of your own scripture and
dogma is nothing short of astounding.

By the way, regarding "Christian values and beliefs", this explains
why the majority of criminals in prison are Christian, and there are
even less atheists in prison proportionally than there are in regular
society. Christianity has been used as the impetus throughout the
ages to justify everything from slavery and treating women as physical
property to genocide. Gotta love those "Christian values and beliefs".

Actually, the holiday at this time of year is much older than
Christianity. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia for 7-12 days
(depending on the emperor in charge). They even exchanged gifts at
this time of year. Northern Europeans had yultide around the solstice
and accounts for the "12 days of Christmas". The christian church
would like you to believe that this holiday is all about Christ and
this is simply not true, many cultures predating Christianity had
paternal gods that oversaw this time of year. What happened in the
middle ages was that the Christian church swept through Europe putting
pagans to the sword, burning holy tree groves, and replacing them with
cathedrals - there is the real "war on Christmas" and it was
perpetrated by the people that now claim to be persecuted at this time
of year. Personally, I like to wish everone a happy Yule - this
represents 12 days of gift exchange and partying and family.

Happy Yule!

I think anyone who actually gets offended by someone wishing them a
"Merry Christmas" is an ignorant prick.

You may not celebrate Christmas, but how could you actually be angry
at someone wishing you good fortune? Simply say "thank you" and move

Nobody gets offended. The "Merry christmas" thing being offensive is
a total fabrication made by a bunch of conservative pundits, like Bill
O'Reilly that have to overdramatize everything and suggest there is a
"war on Christmas" - their viewership basically operates on fear and
loathing and that's how they get peoples' attention. The news
networks trot out a bunch of partisan trolls who are not
representative of the mainstream.

That notwithstanding, watch how uppity conservatives get if, for
example, a Muslim or Hindu does an opening prayer at some public
event...

Pretty obnoxious when someone spams the group with OT stuff that is
guaranteed to piss a large portion of the group off, ain't it?

This year I learned that Ramadan moves throughout our calendar.
(thankful for the guy working next to me this on this)

Roughly translated, it is the 11th month, in a *LUNAR* calendar. so,
Ramadan keeps advancing, and circles our calendar about once every 40
years.

I would sprinkle that one around too, since your chance of hitting it
are only one in 12 if you selected any particular month.

Kudos to Lloyd for working Little Jimmy Dickens into the conversation
somehow.

I, for one, don't mind seeing intelligent points of view imparted.

It's also refreshing to see posts that are well thought out, spelled
and capitalized and punctuated correctly.

Keep 'em coming, pincorrect! For every inane retort from the right,
there are dozens of moderate lurkers actually using their melons.

And those who are crying foul because they can't wrap their tiny
little minds around anything other than what their ignorant parents
taught them, how about you go away instead?
