I love my weekend repair calls. Saturday evening appointment. Caller
has an Evel Knievel, works but needs bands. Flipper a little weak.

I get to the place and was shown the machine which was packed tightly
into a corner in the garage. Stuff underneath, on top, and all around
this baby. I worked my way into the corner and pulled the glass to
get to the playfield. The rubber bands I am looking at are shot. The
sling bands were now dried out heavy duty regular rubber bands. So
let's start at the top. (This game has the plain scoring bumpers at
the top similar to pop bumpers without the mechanism and ring).

Wrapped around these two bumpers is something, "mushy soft", with
scotch tape over the top of it. I pulled the tape away and ended up
with this brownish soft, gooey string about 1/2" thick. I asked the
owner if he knew what this was and he proudly informed me that it was:

A string of flour tortilla soaked in a rubber glue, let to dry, and
then formed around the bumper. He then wrapped the tape around the
material to hold it in place. (Well, it did kind of work). He said he
had been experimenting with the other bands also but he had not
perfected the sling shot bands yet. He couldn't quite get the bounce
he wanted but....he said they did not snap in two. I was curious as
to how he got the ends together, and kept the arm from damaging the
material from the back side, but I decided not to pursue the
conversation anymore as I was just about to lose it. And you
sometimes think YOU need to get a life!

When I left it had all the correct bands on it. I have to admit I was
a little scared to lift the playfield. I wasn't shure what I was
going to find under there. I will probably never look at a tortilla
the same again, or without laughing.

You should have looked underneath...could have been a T-Bone steak holding a
flipper mechanism in place :)

next time try filet mignon wrapped in bacon. Medium rare.

actually if you cut it right you could make rubber ring out of squid.
I hope you showed up at the guys place in a Flintstones mobile, you
know, you get it rolling with your bare feet and it runs all day.

Wow! I think he just whipped our CARGPB's all to hell and back. That's
