Sound works, and you can hear it, but the volume pot adjustment ranges
from "dead silent" to "drowned out by casual conversation". I'm not looking
to compete with Korn's BK2K, but this thing wouldn't have been heard over
the noise of the change machine in the arcade, much less the other games,
so this can't be right. Anybody run in to this before?

Replace volume and sustain pots.

Replace OP amp. Look in the book for where it is located.

I don't know if Playboy is the same, but my Bally Special Force has
two volume controls. One at the coin door, and one on the sound board.

The pots seem to be ok. No dead spots or other obvious problems.

Which one? I'm looking at the schematics here:

and it looks to me like there are two op amps in the output stage of the
circuit. Which one are you referring to?

Yeah, you'd expect that, but Playboy doesn't have a coin door area volume
pot, just the one on the sound board itself.

The 741 is usually the one.

Again. Any luck with this?

Not yet. I was out of town for a couple of weeks. I'll post a followup
when I get the opamp replaced.

Ok, sorry for the *really* late reply here, but I did want to follow up
and close this thread. I changed the 741, and the volume improved. It's
still not all that loud, but it's ok.

Did you try and replace the 380 as well? I am having the same issue.
Thanks,
