How to get 16yo kids to play pinball- CASH!

I had a party for my GF's 16 year old....a Halo freak, video game nut
(classic and new), and one who only plays the pinballs once in a
while. I started a week ago getting the basement ready for the over
night party. (2) ems needed attention, Battlezone lost a ROM, Rush
driver needed a new HOT transistor, Bally Lane needed to be hung on
the wall, Hook Atari 2600 up to the projection TV.

A few hours into the party the crew of 8 boys started to sit in front
of the projector looking at Facebook pages (projector is also a PC
monitor). Time for some pinball tourneys! Only half wanted to play
until I started fronting cash for the prizes...they all wanted in.

They were having little side bets/games after a couple of Zen tourneys
on new and old games, one puck bowler tourney, and a Booz Barometer
tourney. Minimum cash required per tourney to get them all to play was
$10 split between 2 people for the Zen. They left the computer alone
and were playing games.

Party went on from 8pm to 7am. I cashed out at 4am. Still tired.

haha i did the exact same thing this weekend. worked like a charm. I
did best buy gift cards. it went amazing and there were no fights over
who gets to play their xbox on the crappy 27" tv in my basement.

next year i'll have to make the zen tournament double elimination.

This works for 30 and 40 something year old kids also!! ;-)
4th of July, we had a picnic...well it rained all day...so the picnic
became an inside thing...with me out side grilling with an umbrella no
less!! ;-\ But anyway, we had just got our Spirit of 76 back together,
and a couple of the guys, some play pins some don't...were looking at
the pins, and started playing. ;-) next thing you know, someone throws
a $5 on the game and says who's in....then you couldn't get them to
stop playing even for food!! ;-)
One of them was bound and determined he was taking my SO76 home with
him...;-)

Think this will work with adults?

We have a New Year's party (No Kids) every year and I've been thinking
about making one of my pins a cash machine.
No one in our group of family/friends are that into pinball, although
the machines do get plenty of play.

Trying to think of ways to gin interest and I thought about converting
a single player wedgehead back to a quarter per credit.

I'll seed the cash box with $20 then people can buy quarters off me to
be used on the tourney machine.
Winner takes all (or maybe I'll do a 2nd and 3rd place as well)

I'll get a dry erase board to hang above the machine to keep scores
posted. People love seeing their name at the top of a list!

As the host I will not participate in the tourney, other than to
dispense quarters

I suggest you have at least 2nd, and 3rd. Or, even run a second
tourney as Zen/(split-flipper).

With winner-take-all, people soon see who has the lead and most will
loose interest.

Random Zen pairings give more people a shot at placing in-the-money.

Yes, and for 20-year-olds instead of cash you can use whiskey. Had an
pinball tourney in our dorm lounge back in '77. It was 25 cents to
enter and the prize was a bottle of Jack. Not sanctioned by the
school, mind you.
