It's got a large community, because it's a Damn Fine Game;-)
I don't play it networked in any way, just standalone, but that's my
own scheduling oddness more than anything.

Me too. Almost entirely solo play but for medical reasons. Most of the MP
games are 1 turn a day but there are days, sometimes 2 or 3, that Im
pretty zombied out
But yeah I love the game on many levels. The strategy is SOoooooo deep.
Ive had games that died in a month because someone posted a killer walk-
thru. This game is still hotly debated years after its release. The
graphics and sound are kindof last decade but if you are willing to
sacrifice those to game play its pretty slick.
I also love that its a Linux game, ported to Windows and Mac. Everyone
can play it but it loves Linux. And the CD comes with all 3. So I can
play it from my Windows desktop but run MP games on my linux server. (an
still use it on a Mac portable when I get one)
Hmm.. I should probably mention that I dont play it solo in vanilla mode
anymore. That did keep me interested for a couple of years (more than
most games) but now I have a collection of mods that add more More MORE

For me a lot of it is weekends. One a day would be fine, but I'm often
offline on weekends.

With lots of variation, which is what I like. You take someone like
Caelum and think, how can I make this work? And there's not a single
answer ...

I am. Then again, I also love Dwarf Fortress. You might want to
check that out, too.

I run on my Mac. Then again, Mac these days is just a GUI on top
of NetBSD, so that's OK. My linux machines are just servers and such.

I've grabbed some of the mods and maps off the Illwinter site, but haven't
really made any myself.

True, although I do have my favorites. If I can get Gift of Health
and Enchanted Forest up and running ....

If its fully patched there are 72 nations in it. And they are all
different. People come into the forums and want hints on what is strong or
weak and I tell them to find the nation that matches their style of play.
Armed armies, or barbarian hordes, or research, or turtling, or undead, or
stealth. And then building a pretender to match. THAT will be the strongest
for them and they can play MP. But keep in mind that the other people have
a best also and its not the same as yours :)
I swear it took me a couple of years to try everything. And after that the
modded nations are even more extreme. We have had some games with 1500
province maps and 99 players.
