i have a very minor problem i really like the way diku muds are run
with renting instead of selling objects and the consider options
and the instant initiation into guilds
but i also like the lp muds quests and challenges and on line
building for wizards--- are there any hybrid muds?
or at least dikus run more like lps or vise versa?
they both are good muds and i wish someone could figure out a
way to bring the attributes of both onto one mud

I guess you could say Warhammer II fits that bill..
It's not yet ready to play on however, but it has alot of ideas
not normally found in LPmud, and some of them are along the diku lines.
"consider" isn't yet coded, I keep forgeting every time I'm there, though
the 'background' items for it have been put in, so it will be in soon enough :-)

Anyway, it's located at:

dogstar.colorado.edu 2112

between 6pm-8am weekdays and 24hrs weekends.

But watch out for bugs... it's still full of em.

We are, however, using the LPmud filesystem and game driver.
Currently we're running LPmud 3.0.44-DR, in -o mode (for now... we can actually
almost run in non -o, but we need to fix a few things with that) with what was
once, long ago a 2.4.5 mudlib. However, things have changed... LPmud code is
only barely portable now, and almost nothing is really the same except for some
of our LPC documentation. Speaking of which, if you have improved docs, please
let me know, as I'm supposed to be reorganizing the stuff we have to make it
easier for new wizards... somehow the 640k or more of docs we have isn't easily
comprehended by a new wizard, and many of the function descriptions are from
the 2.4.5 mudlib or from the LPmud.2.texinfo file at alcazar.cd.chalmers.se.
We could really use some stuff like "edit for idiots" and "how to use 'ls'
and 'cd'".

gee, the extra ">" really messes up that .sig, doesn't it...

(describes an LP mud, WarhammerII, which is picking up Diku-esque features)

That's very interesting. I haven't had the opportunity to use this LP yet.
There are some Diku-based muds that are working on this "hybrid" problem
from the opposite direction. Temple Diku (bigboy.temple.cis.edu 4000) was the
first to offer online creation of rooms to wizzes, overcoming the #1
objection most serious wizzes have with Diku. Now EPIC is joining in with
online creation of rooms, objects, and mobiles. As of this posting neither
mud offers online creation of complex C-like procedures to attach to
objects or mobiles (that's why Diku calls monsters.. go figure). A new
project is underway to implement a pseudo-C code, although in its infancy
I suspect it will be far less flexible than the well-aged and tested LP.

As for quests, its really a matter of the database authors. There's no
barrier preventing Diku from being more quest-based, but since database
creation is such a collossal pain, I think most authors just run out of
steam and keep the procedures simple. I think experienced LP authors
would make popular Diku wizzes, since even "old, stale" puzzles would be
new to your typical Diku-slasher.
