Is the Games Workshop Painting guide worth getting, or is there a web
site as good or better?
I think the GW painting guide is good, perhaps not worth the $25 US they
charge, however, given the quality/quantitiy of websites out there with
tips, techniques, and photos. Paradoxically, the GW book is best suited for
somebody whose painted a few miniatures, and is looking to expand his/her
technique. So, more like those "how to program C++" books they sell: you
could, theoretically, learn off them, but it's easier to use them as a
reference and to sharpen your skills.
One of the most popular painting sites is Dr Faust's Painting Clinic
http://www.paintingclinic.com/, which has tons of info for all levels. For
bare bones beginners, the GW guides in "how to play" manuals and on their
website show the basics of throwing paint on a mini.
For personal advice, I'd recommend keeping your Guard simple at first, with
the option to add a ton of detail later. With over a hundred figures in a
typical IG force, you don't want to burn out half way (or even less)
through. Strive to paint a squad at a time, so there is some form of
completion. I usually tried to paint two squads a week, others can spend
more time, others less. i would also designate a model or two as test
patterns, use them to make sure you like the look of your design. Also, do
a test squad, where you make sure you like the look of an entire squad with
the same scheme. If you really don't like it, change your color scheme,
you're better off losing a squad than paining an entire army you're not fond
of.

First up - a few hints.
1. Throughly wash you minis with warm water and detergent/soap of some
sort before primering/painting them. This helps get any remaining mold
release compounds and oils from your fingers off the minis so that the
paint/primer will adhere well to the minis.
2. Consider priming the minis before painting - primers generally
provide a better surface for the paint to adhere to the mini. If you're
not sure whether to use white, gray, or black primer, then try a medium
or light gray first. It's the easiest to work towards both light and
dark colors when painting over it as a beginner. Also - if you're going
to try Krylon style primers - you'll want a 'matte' (non-shiny) finish
rather than the gloss or semi-gloss type primers as brush on type paints
tend not to stick to the gloss/semi-gloss as well.
3. If primering plastic minis or models with spray primer of any sort -
always test out EACH CAN of spray primer on a piece of plastic sprue
BEFORE using it on your good plastic minis or model kit. ALL spray
paints contain solvents - and each can will vary, as well as the plastic
in the models. Thus if you want to avoid the dread 'orange peel' effect
where the solvent in the spray disolves the plastic creating a rough and
pitted texture on the surface of your mini - then always test your spray
cans first.
As for sites with good painting advice - first off, try
which is the web site for this group. There's information about
painting, paint brush care, and other stuff. There's also links to a
set of free files on minis painting hosted by a miniatures manufacturer
(not GW) that are very well done. They're in PDF format IIRC and a free
PDF viewer can be had from www.adobe.com if you don't already have one.
Anther fantastic resource can be found on www.yahoo.com - create a yahoo
account, go to their 'groups' section, and join the mini-painter email
list. It's a mailing list that has loads of talented people who will
gladly share knowledge, and 'how to' advice. It's a great list for
beginners and highly experienced painters alike.
You can also ask for help here. If you have access to a digital camera,
you can even take pictures of your stuff and get better feedback. But
just so you know, this is a non-binaries (no pictures / attachements)
news group, so the trick is to put the pictures up on a free web site,
and then post the url links here for people to check them out. (If you
join Yahoo, there's also an RGMW-Genbus {general business} mailing list
that has it's own files and photos section where you can place pics of
painted minis - there's already a number of them there now from various
folks that frequent this news group.)
Hope that helps,

#1582. I think they call it Warhammer "40K" because that is how
much you are going to have to make per year in order to play.

Hey Myr, do you have that saved in a FAQ somewhere? We should have
articles like this stores somewhere and posted in a monthly (weekly?)
FAQ, so the newbies can find them easier.
