i was wondering if anyone has come across any computer game that
imitates the traits and game style of tabletop war gaming.
What i am looking for is something as close as possible to a simulation
of a live gaming session on the table.
I know nothing beats the feeling of the real world experience but a
program like that could be helpful to communicate over the internet
moments and situations happening on the table. You could show what you
did and not just talk about it.

As well as Vassal mentioned by Playa, there is also Little Cyber Wars.

Vassal seems more complete and is being worked on still, whereas LCW seems
to have stagnated as the last update was in 2005.
