Time for another progress thread (since for a change I've made some...)

Well, to the good - I have made some decent progress in the minis
department - my 3 Silver Skulls dreads (AoBR dreads with magnetic
conversions) are nearly complete with only tiny detailing work needed,
and the bases are done and awaiting to have static grass and a few more
details added. I've got 2 more Silver Skulls Tac Squads about 85%
complete - the champion from the AoBR set is coming along very nicely
and I'm looking forward to seeing it finished - I'm just not certain
what colors I want to use on the back banner. And the Rhino / Razorback
is in need of only the final detailing and weather, as well as decals
and it's good to go as well. Woot!
Unfortunately my city fight terrain still isn't nearly as far
along as I wanted it to be by now, by primer gray bastion stares at me
forlornly as I haven't got a clue what color scheme I want to go with on
it, and my poor termigants haven't seen a paint brush since my last
progress report.

On the up side - I did pass my Network+ certification, so I've got one
more to finish up my MCSA. Weeee! Then on to MCSE and more brain
melting fun.

So what have you slackers been up to?

Myr :)

And I want someone to slap me with a fish every time I buy something
new, assemble it, and then leave it unpainted for months.

Congrats on the pass Myr. You got My Computer's Screwed Again, and now
it's onto Must Call Someone Experienced! Sorry - little humour from my
days at EA.

My DA army is increasing in size and all that good stuff. I have one
rhino, two razorbacks and two combos (later realised I should not have
glues down the top hatches - ah, well) almost finished. Ther magnetised
arms Deathwing are still in basecoate while I worry about the vehicles.

The drop pod issue has been interesting. I don't know if anyone has
noticed or experienced this flaw in the DP sprues. On the sprues where
there are two fins, blades, whatever you wish to call them - there is
one which has a decided king in the middle. Very consistent across the
four kits I bought. I had eight that were like this. So bad that I
wouldn't have been able to assemble the drop pods without heating the
fins to try and straighten them, or by doing some colourful swearing,
filing and filling. Which just won't do as I'm painting them
pre-assembly so I can get the insides done nicely.
So I called GW Direct Services and we conversed on the issue. I sent
photos and on Monday, two more drop pod kits arrived, gratis, so I could
raid them for the parts I needed. Opened the box giddily to find that
these models had the same problem. Egad!
Today after work, off I toddled to the GW store and after much friendly
banter with the store manager and his Igor, we raided some kits off the
shelf and I was furnished with fins that were straight, and the Igor had
to figure out how to put two drop pods together for their Space Wolf
(yes they're behind) or Blood Angels display with wonky pieces.

Also have one land raider basecoated - again, being painted before
assembly because I'm a fussy sod. Not bothering with the inside cos i
can't be bothered. It's a tabletop piece, not a display item. The other
one I may take some time on as I have ForgeWorld doors for it.

And there's the Damocles Rhino - had the kit since June and it's still a
kit.

To add fuel to the fire I'm waiting for a strongpoint, imperial sector,
shrine of the Aquila and a Ravenwing to arrive from Bitkingdom.com.
They should arrive sometime after Don Quixote realises windmills don't
shout back. And then theres the Fortress of Redemption. Drool, is all I
can say about that one.

I ordered a pro-painted Sammael from midgardmodels on eBay. VERY nice
paint job. Paid my $111 Canadian (included $25 shipping from
Argentina!) and waited, because I cannot envision myself assembling a 17
piece metal model with any patience. The money to me was more than worth
it for the time it saved me. So it arrived. The post of the cast resin
base had broken off in the bottom of the bike, and the left hand/sword
had been broken off and wrapped seperately. Not at all like it was in
the picture, and there was no warning on the auction to say it would be
shipped "broken". Emails back and forth etc, and I got the cost of the
shipping back. Whatever - I made a new post from 1/8" welding rod and
pinned the hand. Now I need to find something to cover the paint and
keep the stuff on the model. And that's why I ordered a Ravenwing...

Yes, the DW with magnetised arms. Quite.

A decided KINK in the middle of the fin. On eight fins - two in each box.

And I STILL haven't finished sprue-clipping from Space Hulk. Poor

I finally got round to painting some of my orcs !

So far I've done a unit of 20, and some spider riders are next.
The plan is to alternate units of orcs with units of something else, but
this may vhange.
Definately NOT selling them this time.

Probably.

I took some progress pictures which will go online just as soon as I can be
arsed.

I've been busy the past couple of months so not too much progress.
Pluss with the heat on now, the cats drink my paint water down when my
back's turned.

15mm retardation:
I don't know why, but I'm on a 15mm scifi/Stargrunt (god I love these
rules) kick. Ordered a smattering of Laserburn, GZG etc figs and some
FoW Bersaglieri and L6/40 tanks. (As if WW2 Italians didn't have
enough problems in their own game system) However, the only shit
that's come in is the little bit of stuff I ordered from 15mmUK so no
pics.

I was so frustrated waiting that I started converting some WW2 brits,
an opel truck, and nappy prussians I had lying around (no pics)

Anyway, this thread is useless without pics

fuck all. my last completed project was a scratched/converted BFG ship,
really just to use up some leftover bits of cruiser sprue from other
conversions. that was back around mid-august. the past couple months i've
just been swamped with school shit. i have a couple of dreadnought
conversions planned, but when/if i'll get the time, i've no idea.

cute. that quad cannon actually looks a lot less sucky on a vehicle than it

Not bad. I struggled with the whole "front or back mounted turret" thing
and in the end decided up front made more sense for a Hydra. I want the
guns as far forward as possible even though the range is 72" or so.

Also it will make a contrast when the Manticore rolls out with the back
mounted turret.

i tried to get mine as close to mid-hull as possible, so that it didn't look
like it was about to tip over. the fact that the Chimera hull slopes down
at the front and is flat at the rear means that custom turrets do usually
look better further forward.

i've idly considering doing a Chimera w/ predator autocannon turret, but i
don't think i got any Chimera hulls bits left and honestly i've no space
left to store any more large figures even if i do :(

> Also it will make a contrast when the Manticore rolls out with the back

my manticore is pretty much straight outta the box with the addition of some
leftover HK missiles:
http://what.h8r.net/hyperzone/wip/manticore01.jpg
http://what.h8r.net/hyperzone/wip/manticore02.jpg
i was gonna stack another 4 on there, but couldn't work out how to mount any
more launch rails without getting them in the way of the bottom row of
missiles.

Yeah, I've only got one Pred, but it's fully magnetized. As well
as the Whirlwind, and there's a pair of Razorbacks with swappable Hvy

Yeah, I'm glad that I didn't rush right out to buy any of these.
They're cool looking kits, but they've become the new 'land speeder' of
sucky kit design both in quality and in 'PITA' to assemble from what
I've heard from multiple sources.

Somehow this doesn't surprise me that you had to work at it twice
to get useable bits. Particularly not after my calling FW for a 'right
and left' burst cannon for the Remora drones, only to get two more
freaking left ones when all I really needed was a single right burst
cannon. You'd think that they'd at least know the parts in their own
kits, or for fuck's sake could look at the damn instruction set to
figure it out.

I do quite a bit of pre-painting before assembly on my own kits
where possible. I hate having to be a contortionist while trying to
paint recessed bits that can still be seen but which are behind arms,
etc and hard to get at with a brush.

I know the painter you're talking about. The artist has skill,
but I've just never been a fan of that style of minis painting - at
least not in the color schemes the artist seems to favor. (Some of the
'Pro Painted' conversions - i.e. junk parts they had laying around -
make me wince too.)

Ok, that's definitely not cool. I can understand the unintentional
breakage - since one can't really control the postal gorillas. But the
seller could have warned you about removing the sword arm, and more
importantly - could have used a jeweler's saw to make a clean cut, not
to mention pinning and repainting the area before shipping so that all
you had to do was carefully reglue it.

Ah well. I look forward to seeing some pics of your ever
increasing Minis hoard.

Wholey Shite, Jihad man!!! The conversion alone is damn cool,
combine it with the paint job you put on it, and it's moved straight to
the 'F'ing Cool' catagory. I was half expecting to see something based
on one of the old Robotech / Macross Invid Toys from back in the late
80's / early 90's (not that I have one of those or a Zentradi Female
officer's suit stashed away some where). I love the color and the big
ass 'Eye of Chaos' icon that does indeed make it look one the Invid
Mechs. Kick ass job.

Sweet paint job on a damn skippy cool conversion. Nuff said!

My Baneblade is still sitting in the box untouched. What color
scheme are you going to do yours in? (And it had to be a bitch to do
the hinges on those hatches.)

You need to do a side by side round up photo shoot of all your
tank conversions. (That and the techno-flying-bug with Knight and
explosive tipped lance.)

You need another group shot with all of your 40K conversion dudes.

I actually snagged 3 sets of their Zombies when they first came
out. The detailing is great. Unfortunately the difference in scale
between them and GW's IG models just doesn't work for me. Either the IG
troopers are all the size of a WWF Pro Wrestler, or the zombies would
all have to be mal-nourished teenagers. The size disparity is just too
noticable unfortunately.

I do have to check and see what's new recently on their site though.

i dunno. i appreciate the baroque 40K wackiness as much as the next guy,
but in this instance the excess is inappropriate. sure, it's pretty as a
big gay wedding cake, but you can't really get around the fact that this is
SUPPOSED to represent an installation specifically designed to resist
artillery and direct support fire.

an aesthetic similar to that of the bastion kit, with a few minor
Astartes-bling concessions, would have been a lot more appealing IMO.

i cut off a whole knuckle, down to the joint, while building my
Xtra-Rivetty(TM) land raider a couple years back. it eventually healed up
after a lot of trouble... but then i split the scar tissue wide open about 6
months ago (boxing), and it's been continually half-healing and then

True. I was a bit disappointed that Wargames Factory didn't make them
match the already-available figures in the genre, but all the
Historical hard plastic manufacturers (Wargames Factory, Warlord,
Perry Miniaturess) appear to have opted for "True 28mm" figures (as
pioneered by the Perrys for GW's LotR range?) rather than "Heroic
28mm" and I can understand Wargames Factory wishing to maintain
consistency within it's product range. However, I've been lucky in
that the Wargames Factory Zombies are more "ragged" than "rotten", and
I'll be able to utilise them in my (proposed) "IG on the turn" army as
mutant militia standing in for conscripts. I'd always intended these
should exhibit a wide range of stature (although the really big
Mutants would substitute for Ogryn) and I can utilise spare arms from
other Wargames Factory ranges with weapons from Mongoose' Mega City
Street Gang (unfortunately the figures are too genre-specific, but
will provide donor components) to produce a "Counts As" unit. I
actually like the variety of the human (or similar) form that has
always been the bane of parade ground tyrants ("All right you lot,
line up, tallest on the right, shortest on the left"), one of the
charms of Nick Lund's "Chronicle" figures was the deliberate variety
of size in the figures in any particular range, with cohesion being
given by consistently-sized details and accessories. I'd always
assumed mass-produced equipment would do this for 40K units, but I
recently found out that the classic German steel helmet of the WW2 era
was actually made in a range of sizes, including some quite small ones
after they started drafting whole classes of schoolkids into the Flak
units. As it stands, the sole mutant assembled so far (see, I have
done somthing!) consists of an old plastic Space Dwarf head on a
Gorkamorka Ork body, the right arm being that of the Catachan firing a
lasgun one-handed supported by it's sling, and the left coming from
the old Chaos Mutations frame. He's quite bulky, but I expect
Gretchen and even Gnoblars to donate some bodies (did I say these guys
will be the dregs of the Underhive?), as may some Crypt Ghouls,
although these latter would take a lot of greenstuffing - I'm thinking
along the lines of the unfortunate outcome of a one-night stand
between Gollum and an Orc, a thought I'd recommend others not to
think...

not exactly... alot of what I have left to do is "get lucky" on some
trick or treat drops, but you can only trick or treat once every hour
per toon and I can get a chance to get the items once a day as a daily
quest which is just "log in, and hope someone already killed the
Headless horseman in town and pick up an item". which I finished that
achievement on 2 toons. so the other stuff left to do is some tedious
traveling (takes about 2 hours per toon, 90% is spent afk on flight
paths) and I'll have to pay guildies to get to kill the seasonal boss
on my lower level toons. Shouldn't be too hard to finish monday night,
they'll appreciate the extra chances at the flying broom mount and the
Headless Horseman's Flying Deathcharger. Especially since the fight is
so fucking easy that my level 66 Paladin can probably heal the fight.

I'll do the trick or treating and maybe some of the travel stuff
logged in tonight. There seems to be an available wi-fi again that I
can access.

I'll paint some more on tuesday at the GW store after I go talk to my
attorney and hit Best Buy to spec cameras.

Cheated by getting a batch of horses painted by a painting service in
Sri Lanka (http://paintedfigs.com/). Not golden daemon quality but
they quote a fair price for really good table top quality. Was really
happy with the communication, speed, packing and quality.

Good news is it has got me moving on the riders. I've now got almost
the entire anti-chaos chaos army painted.

10 de-chaosed war-hounds (all spikes scales and tendrils removed)
14 80s-90s old style chaos knights
10 original mounted marauders

left to paint
5 new style mounted marauder ( base colours down)
10 new style knights (undercoated)

Premise is these guys are a Northern tribe out raiding but not
particularly in with the gods. Figure the knights can form a core of
about 4 sections of knights with 2 sections of five war-hounds out
front. The marauders will run down the flanks.

On the 40k side I'm still stuck with the fun job of repainting 5 leman
russ I made magnet swappable. To add to my woes I picked up one of
the new demolishers. Fighting the urge to build it though until I get
more painting done. Also picked up a Shadowsword. Given the
Baneblade is still just base coated this one will stay boxed till I
get some more painted.

Need to find more time....

Cheater!

What's funny is I was taking a gander at the site (just to see what the
fuss is all about, mind you... I paint my own stuff). One of the local
tournament howler monkeys is listed in the testimonials page. I'm going
to have to give him a load of shit the next time I see him. Given the
way they date the testimonials I'm pretty sure he used an outsourced
painted army at the last big event. :P

First ogres, now orcs.

Mind you.

I recently took up yet another genre - moderns in 20mil.
Here are some pics:
http://s523.photobucket.com/albums/w352/aon14/Moderns/

I've also been doing some more of my seven years war stuff.
I'm about 3/4 through painting a prusssian fusilier battalion.
Finished painting but not re-based the second battalion of IR 13.
They look pretty similar to some I've already done.

Love the paint jobs on the Mohawks - very nice. And that's a
butt-load of infantry to boot. The (I want to guess 12lb) field gun is
very nice too. A question for you - how did you do the flags or
banners? Are those decals or did you hand paint the heraldry?

I really liked my first Nikon Coolpics 5700. I got a ton of good
pictures out of it before it died (close to 10,000) due to a sensor
defect. Picked up a referb on Ebay for a lot less, and it's doing fine
but it isn't quite as good as the first one. I want a Nikon D80 in the
worst way (which is standing up in a hammock). I'd like a digital
camera that I can use to both snap still pics of my minis and also get
great pictures of people and critters in motion. The Coolpix is fine on
the stills, but doesn't have anywhere near the speed needed for motion
capture.

Couple of people elsewhere were asking about scale.
I stuck that one up in the album to show that the Caesar 20mil stuff would
make space Orks look VERY big if you used them for 40k.

Ah well there you go now - maybe some seven years war info might be
interesting..

The long explanation:
At that time the done thing was to have the likes of 12pdr or "long" 6pdr
cannon in small static batteries.
The unit of maneuvre for infantry was pretty much the battalion ( with
exceptions ).
Round about 800 men in a battalion.
Usually 2 battalions to a regiment.
Each battalion would have a couple of small guns attached to it.
These were small enough to be manhandled forward on the battlefield.
They would sort of leapfrog forward of the parent unit, shoot a bunch and
then repeat until they got within musket and charge range.
Usually 3pdr to 6pdr in size. Although just to confuse things more the unit
of weight was different from nation to nation.
Frederick ( the great of Prussia ) liked bigger battalion guns and in the
latter half of the war decided that howitzers - particularly the 7pdr
howitzer were better.
It's a bit weird that stuff from medieval times still filtered through into
far later periods.
For example, the position of honour was the right flank.
This goes back to when people used shields and you put the really good guys
on the right flank as their open flank was unshielded.
So gunnery was considered a scummy dirty trade and they deployed on the left
flank of each battalion.
The colonels flag was more important than the regiment flag so his goes to
the right of the flags and in the first battalion of his regiment.

In short.
Those are 6pdr battalion guns.
Guns are a pain in the bum for 7yw since it's difficult to find nice ones
which are the right scale.
So my prussian 6pdrs are Foundry cannon but with Front Rank wheels.
Foundry wheels are too small.

The flags are printed.
I have a cheap colour laser.
You'd go nuts painting 4 almost identical flags per regiment.
I download pictures off a web site and manipulate them.
Tootle with the image a bit, duplicate it reflected and add a gap for it to
wrap round the pole.
Technically, the flags are a little oversized but they look nicer that way.
They should really be thinner and finer since flags of the time were painted
on light silk so they would catch the breeeze easily and be more manageable
for the guys carrying them.

Before 7th though.
From High Elves onwards most lists are way more powerful.

Well.
Unfortunately, except maybe skaven.

==================================

Same here. I've only dabble in modern MMORPGs because I know if I ever
seriously got into one that would be the end of life as I know it. In fact,
I think the last MMORPG I played where I leveled a character past a 1/4th of
the level cap was a MUD.

As for FPS games, I've been addicted to Team Fortress 2 for almost 2 years
now which already takes a large chunk of my disposable play time.

I was cutting ginger and not paying enough attention and then suddenly the
last 5mm of the pad of my little finger wasn't there anymore. It's not as
painful as you think as the nerves just aren't there anymore. It just more
weird shit like all the pain and itching being on the side of my ring
finger. Or waking up feeling like someone is sticking pins in me. Although
I did try and push a door open with it a couple of hors ago and I didn't
like the feeling one bit.

It's growing back nicely. Apparently I'll just have a spot without too many
nerves.

I don't recommend it tho'. I had to drive down to the Doctors and convince
them to let me see the nurse to get it bandaged up. She called me a dork
and got the Dr into have a look. He said "it's a bleeder". I had a
tourniquet bandage on for two days. The pressure on my knuckles was
actually the worse bit of the whole thing. That started to get pretty
excruciating. I tried putting a latex glove over it to shower. The moment
I got it over the knuckle and let it go tho' I had to say a lot of bad words
and pull it back off.

I did get some painting done when I got a much smaller dressing.

Night Goblins and they roll over whatever I'm facing by sheer weight of
numbers - having spare units to get round the sides and back, massively
outnumbering so always getting combat bonuses etc.

As soon as the number of points goes up, there's a movement towards more
expensive troop types.
Firstly, cos they're there. The "oo, shiny!" effect.
Secondly, cos if they cost twice as many points, I only have to assemble
and paint half as many.

Trouble is, half as many means they have to be twice as effective. And
they're not. I'm not that good tactically (cos I don't practice) and bitty,
incoherent lists make for bitty, incoherent attacks.
Also, higher points allow my opponents to take really effective troops and
weapons which simply aren't there in 500 point lists, meaning my tactics
have to go up yet another notch.

There's a growing gulf between the new books and old. which doesn't help so
much.
In most of the new books the elites get really good abilities, and the
entire army gets good abilities.
HE with ASF just hack cheap infantry to bits before they get to fight, as
one of the least powerful examples.

Ranks and flanks no longer works.
So you're left with cheap rubbish who largely provide easy meat for your
opponent.
For some reason, the designers don't seem to have worked this out.
So Skaven are about to be redone.
They're not so good.
Doesn't bode very well for OnG.

That aside.
WTF are you thinking of playing 500 point games?

For 500p games try the border patrol rules.
Rules Summary:
-one core unit required
-an infantry unit of ten (no flyers) required
-min. two units, max. four units
-one hero slot only
-a model must not be more than 125p.
-one war machine/chariot only
-one elite or rare unit only
-no unit may be larger than unit strength 25

This makes 500p games much more playable. We banned storm daemon etc.
as well. Chaosdaemons need some special treatment as well.

Nice pictures! Like the Horrors - the blue ones with 20 toes each made
me grin. I really like the paint job so far on the Daemonette, I look
forward to seeing it when it's all done.

As for your Chaos Marines - I'm shock, SHOCKED I SAY! - to see them with
actual honest to goodness *ARMS* attached to their torsos and
everything. Heh! :)

I wouldn't mind seeing a couple pictures of the terrain behind the
horrors, etc and your Aquilla terrain piece as well now that you've got
the new camera.

Myr :)

RTM - Dark Eldar.

Old Bear - Poof.

RTM - Christ, I've had the little blighters for three years now.
It's about time this f'ing army wasn't all krylon grey. You
should be supportive.

Old Bear - OK. Well done, you poof.

that's actually the store terrain at the GW Shop in Westminster. There
lighting is better in there than at home...

Heh. More impressive to me is the lack of mould lines.
Also, the painting of those tiny helmet lenses.
(Details almost never attended in my area.)

Are those the new Citadel washes?
Also, those BL hoses look unique -
A sort of Reanimator vibe?

Well done, Blackheart!

yeah.. I generally get eyes on helmets pretty consistently. I'm hit or
miss on mould lines and usually have to go back and clean some up. I
think most of my old CSM were actually cleaned up by my old college
roommate a few years ago when we were snowed in for a weekend and had
nothing better to do than work on models.

the pink horrors have a coat of the new Citadel red wash over old old
version of tentacle pink. The Blue horrors were black primed, heavy
heavy drybrush of a old UM Blue, light drybrush of enchanted blue.
washed with old old citadel blue wash. and by "old" or "old old" I
generally mean the line of paints that eventually became Coat D'Arms.

the 1k Sons and Plague Marines were washed by dipping them in a really
diluted cup of black craft acryllic. It doesn't show as well on the
PM's due to the accidental use of gloss sealer. The use of Gloss was a
happy accident for the 1K Sons.. doesn't look as good on the PM's...

as for the BL... that's a mostly carbon copy of the old scheme in the
2nd Edition CSM Codex where they are black with yellow hoses and
silver trim (or Gold for veterans.) I'm not very good at working with
yellow. That color is from taking a half empty bottle of old old
sunburst yellow citadel and filling the pot the rest of the way with
an artist acryllic super-pigmented yellow (came in a big tube.)

I'm not gonna claim to be GD level or anything... but I will always
make an effort to put out something I'm not going to be ashamed to put
on the table... well.. except for arms.. they get put on when they're
damn good and ready... regardless of how much whinging Myr does over
it.

the basing is shale from the new GW basing kits, some talus rock and
green flock that I've had around for years...

But as you can tell... my painting style relies on heavy use of
drybrushing to get stuff done quick... then I soften that up with
washes. I tried to do line highlighting and I just don't have the
patience to do it on rank and file. I might try to do it on some
bigger stuff, but I don't know yet.

Right now I really want to sell alot of my excess non-chaos 40K stuff
to get some cash saved up. I'm not letting myself buy anything new
until something gets done. Or multiple somethings in some cases. I
bought the stuff for the Brass Scorpion. I'm gonna finish these demons
then I'm gonna try to acquire some FW World Eater stuff and go on a
Khorne kick for a few months.. Brass Scorpion, Berserkers WE Termies,
bloodletters... might try and build a Tower of Skulls for Apoc.
Definitely want to make a couple Blood Slaughterers, they'll be able
to double as Defilers also.

Keep in mind that there's a good chance I won't use any of this stuff
until the CSM Codex stops sucking... though my local friends aren't
entirely against me using the old book... if they actually play...

i think the big project for next spring will be terrain again and
getting what I have done fixed up. Sitting in storage and never
getting sealed hasn't done some of it any favors.
