I've recently started playing 40k and building a space marine army.
After looking at most of the chapters I decided to create my own chapter
"The Dark Fists". Today I was painting my landspeeder and I was
wondering: "How many space marine chapters are out there that people
play?? How many people made up there own chapter?? Are there really 30
billion ultramarine players??". I was wondering if some of you fellow
marine players could satisfy my curiosity and tell me what chapter you
play, the paint scheme, if it's a sub founding, etc. Then I'll compile
them in a nice list on my HD and maybe put on the net someday.
Thanks for any feedback.

I have a small (read 1000pts) Space Marine army that occasionally forms up alongside my IG...
They are named the Obsidian Angels.
Their colour scheme is black, with Amethyst purple on shoulders/feet/helmet, and their details are
in brass/bronze.
Their chapter symbol, is basically a white cross, with each point having a cross on it...

(Hows that look)

They are a successor chapter of the Dark Angels. They have a couple special rules (mostly regarding
the Assault and Scout squads...) One day I'll get around to posting them here for perusal.

I have *2* sets of Space Marine models, representing the following
chapters:

Grey Knights (First Founding 2nd Legion; records supressed; 6 squads):

Medium grey armour, with black shoulder pads; white helments for
Sergeants, silver helmets for Veteran serveants. White Gothic squad
numbers, no squad icon.

Omega Marines (Ultramarines Sucessor; 1 squad):

Dark green armour, with black shoulder pads; white helmets for
Sergeants, silver helmets for Veteran Sergeants. White Gothic squad
numbers and chapter icon, no squad icon.

I also have a set (7 squads) of converted Chaos Space Marine models
which can play as:

Fallen Angels
Angels Redeemed (Fallen Angels)
Angels of the Apocalypse (Dark Angels Sucessor)

Black armour. White Gothic squad numbers, winged sword icon; no squad
icon.

I play the Space Wolves using a shadow grey undercoat and a space wolves
grey drybrush overtop, though noticing the resent pics i've seen of them,
the new cover for the codex and the cover for the novel Space Wolf, it looks
like their color's are more of a codex grey with yellow highlights rather
then what im using now, I'll be experimenting with this color and a few
extra marines i have to see if i like it better if so i have a heck of a lot
of painting to do, bout 3k points worth.

Why not?

My chapter is the Jade Devils. Black Armour, green lightning flash as the
chapter insignia (Putrid Green). I haven't decided on the founding yet,
but they'd be a generic successor of an Ultramarine successor chapter.

One day I'll polish up the history I wrote for them and shove it on my
website, but being terminally lazy that is probably a way off.

Between fielding Chaos and 'Nids I'm working on a chapter called the
Hospitallers. The basic colour scheme is black with red shoulder pads, and
gold chest insignia. I haven't worked out the chapter insignia yet, but
it'll probably be a variation of the Black Templars' cross. Similarly, the
fluff is yet to be defined.

When I get around to painting my marines, I'll use a chapter made up by one
of my friends called "The Sons of Walker".
The colours etc are based on the Phantom.
Purple base, skull insignia etc.

See, says it right here in the Hitch-hikers ghuide to the Galazy (volume 2)

Macragge: Populated by blue-armoured boyscouting-anal-rapists. Called Ultramarines.
Avoid!
See also: Poop, Girly-men, Whining fan-boys and eunochs.

Volume 2, you say?
Umm, wasn't that the one with several mis-prints?
That should read:
"The Rock: populated by dark green-armoured boyscouting-anal-rapists. Called

1) They don't have long hair, and shades.
2) They don't have a Harley. (Ok, neither do I, but its a good point non-the-less

I've got a fairly large Space Marine Chapter called the Shadow Hunters.
I've been collecting them now for about 3 or 4 years, I'm fairly chuffed
with the background aswell. The main reason I started them is because I
didn't wnat my paint jobs being easily compared to the ones at GW!

David,
I have approximate 3000 point armies each of Blood Angels, Dark Angels and
Space Wolves.
I stayed away from the Ultramarines, too overused......

My home grown chapter are called the "Southern Guard" a second founding from
the
Raven Guard. They are Codex Gray trimed in a deep red and some blue. You can

My marines are the Dark Star chapter, a second founding chapter of uncertain
origins. Troops are in chrome silver armor, with gold trim, assault squads
with red left pauldrons, devastator black, elite blue and command gold. A
single black star is on the right pauldron. Scout squads use appropriate
camoflage for terrain. Vehicles are black with the full chapter emblem, a
silver swirl like a black hole accretion disk with the black star in the
center.

Me too! Back in '87 I played Ultramarines with a really dark blue - a lot
like the Crimson Fists really :)

I play the Mentor Legion now. I don't have an pics up cause I have a poor
quality webcam that I picked up on the cheap. Mine look more like the new GW
interpretation of the Mentor Legion: dark green, green edging to shoulder
pads, white interior, and (bleached) bone eagle emblems.

I really like what you did with your guys! The light green is cool, and I
notice that all the minis have mark VI legs, helmets, and the mark V (I
think) torso. Cool! You must have done a lot of trading for that :)

I want to resurrect some of the old Mentor fluff. Me and a friend have been
talking about it for years. All my veteran marines will have the targeter
eye heads (bald from the assault squad or helmeted with the targeter eye)
and their bolters have scopes attached. Then we'll trash out the rules for
the old targetting web. I just paint so slowly these days that it will
probably take forever.

I didn't mean the whole chapter, as in 1000+ marines. I mean a homegrown
chapter. Probably a novelty chapter that listens 70's music, that has bop
guns(bolt guns), big boppers(heavy bolters), calls Roboute Gullimane 'bootsy',
and is ready to lay the smackdown on the decidedly unfunky traitor legions. Or
maybe a chapter that listens to 90's music, led by DJ beakie, and has MC
Chaplains.

Hmmm......

p.s. I play the Legio Mutanis, the "Mutant Legion" representing
the "changed" remnants of the Fire Hawks that finally arrived on
Crows' World, decades after the Dark Eldar pirates were cleansed
and as recovered in combat viability by the philosophies of the
water-trader-turned-Rogue-Trader Maitreya. Yes, I created this
fluff long before WD99, where we learned that the LotD are now
supposed to be the lost Fire Hawks. See my website for details.
My colors are ultramarine blue (representing the reinstated chapter
colors only recognized as Ultramarine stock) with gold and flame
orange highlights, as homage to the original Fire Hawks' heraldry.

I used to play Ultramarines, though in a variation fo the old Rogue Trader
uniforms, (ie nothing like they look nowadays).

When 3rd Edition came out, I decided I wanted to take a fresh chapter, so I

have been Playing the Mentors, a successor on the original Mentor Legion
with a much lighter green (see the marines section of my webpage gallery,
URL below).

There's also my Dark Angels, 'cos they paint up nice & quick, and I like
their fluff (as opposed to their rules).

And finally, there are the Grendel, who are a BA-successor chapter. I don't
have any finished or on my page yet, but they are crimson, with black, bone
detailing and black helmets with Legion of the Damned-style skulls painted
on them. Should look 'tres sexy and bloodthirsty.

Oh yes, and I have some Legion of the Damned as well....

cheers,

A little over a week ago I happened across a website that had the DIY
Chapter list that this NG compiled a little over a year ago. It has
about 1300 chapters in it (combining traitors and loyalists). Many of
the DIY chapters have email addresses for the owners, so you could
contact them if you wanted more details.

I am going back through my history to see if I can locate the specific
URL of that site.

Yeah! Right, thats it, I'm off to write Codex: C-Funk. Or should it be P-Funk?

I think for the first change, I'll have a troop unit, the bop gunners, that can
have more than one heavy bolter.

Then the next change can be the Aquaboggie assault squads :)

I've already thought of some fluff you know, such as the chapters famed battle
against Hivefleet Chocolate City, and the story of the time Brother Captain
Creole and his terminator squads destroyed the extremely unfunky space hulk
'Whitebread One'.

Codex: Funk. Or Codex: Pure Funk.

I think just 'Funk' is more concise, and would cover it all.

Special character alert. However he can't be a chaos marine, this chapter will
be way to funky to worship a chaos god!

Can't play a nice, normal chapter can you? Normally people only field them
against Chaos, just you bring to them every battle. Can someone say, cheesy?

That doesn't mean you can't have 6 armies each. I know I have at least 5
different Chaos armies (and they are all Word Bearers).

What about the "Angels of Soul"? The "Catachan Funkadelic"?
Don't forget rules for platform shoes (much like a jump pack, I'd think),
bell-bottoms (constant cover save due to the huge flaps), and afros (block line of
sight for more than twice their height).
This sounds silly enough to be fun. I'd even be willing to help write it.

Not loyalist, but I play Word Bearers. 3rd Company to be specific.
Entitled the "Emperors of Chaos" as they are themed around the Black Metal
band, Emperor. They are dark red with silver trim, any tubing is picked out
in green, skulls are done in white, and basically anything else is black.
They are a first founding chapter. See Codex: Chaos version 2 or my
website for more details.

Marines Errant:
White Right side, Ultramarine Blue Left. Appropraite high/low-lites
abound.
Comet motif on right shoulder pad.

Second company is all fast attack, Speeders, Attack Bikes, Bikes and
Jump Packs - I play them with Raven Wing rules.

Isaac Hayes wasn't Shaft, you moron. He just sang the song. Nobody does

He looks cooler without hair than an afro. I still think Roundtree
personified cool in that movie.
Now are you going to get back to the subject of Codex: Funk or will I have

Now, now. Don't cry cheese. At least not yet.

For that, I'd need to see what sort of army he typically takes to a
basic battle. I mean, they *could* be cheesey, depending on what
Special Rules are active and how his force is configured. But they
could also be balanced. So I'd ask Ches to post the last two armies
he's fielded so we can make such a determination.

For reference, I've played my Grey Knights once (finally finished
painting enough). This is what I took in a 1000 pt game:

GREY KNIGHTS:
HQ:
Librarian (+10 pts) w/ Force Sword.

Elite:
5 Rangers (+2 pts ea): Heavy Bolter, 2 Snipers.

Troops:
8 Marines: Lascannon.
7 Marines: Missile Launcher, Flamer.

Heavy:
6 Marines: 2 Missile Launchers, 2 Plasma Cannon.

IMPERIAL ALLIES UNDER INQUISITORIAL COMMAND:
HQ:
Inquisitor w/ Psycannon, Power Sword.

Elite:
6 Marines: Heavy Bolter, Flamer.

Troops:
7 Sisters: Sister Superior w/ Power Sword; Flamer and Multi-Melta.

As it diced out, my Grey Knights had to Deep Strike from Reserve.
Thankfully, it was a 3-way "Cutthroat" game and I was mostly ignored
for the first couple of turns. That allowed my Devastors and one Tac
hit the ground and get into combat position.

I'm going to have to start work on it now. I was only being silly when I
mentioned it, but now it seems like a good idea :)

My Nurgle Chaos Lord is based on the Funkadelic album "MaggotBrain".

I take it you've noticed that essentially every 'modern-era' loyalist Marine
is wearing what appears to be plasteel-ceramite flares?

Thanx for all the feedback the results are in the attached text file (some
entries came from other sources beside this ng). I tried to make the file
readable and understandable. oh, well. It was interesting finding out the
chapters people actually played and how many people where creative enough to
think up their own (i.e. chapters not mentioned in gw info).

Like Justin, I'm surprised here. So basically, you just "treat as"
Dark Angels. That works.

Summary:

1 HQ (Grand Master), 1 Elites (Dread), MINIMUM 2 Troops (Tac and
Scout), 2 Fast (Assault Squads), 2 Heavy (Land Raider, Devs). 40
models, 1 tank, 1 Dread.

From a balance standpoint, there should be more and larger troops
choice. But those nits aside this army isn't so bad from either a
rules (DA) or a composition standpoint. It's kinda small model-wise,
due to the Land Raider and Assault Marines. It's not what I would
field, but I wouldn't have any problems playing against it.

most people hate that army. i dont lose many battle with it, and those i do
lose are to objectives and not points-kill ratio. :)

In article <J59o4.6460$%85.6...@hnlnewsr1.hawaii.rr.com>,

But don't the victory conditions of the scenario/mission being played
determine if you win or not? A lot of the missions have objectives other
than just shooting at each other, they all aren't based on victory
points/point-kill ratios.

I can't speak for ALL of the games you've played, but do know that a lot
of
them (during the Other Realms gaming on Monday nights) were lost
because
you didn't remember the mission objectives (quadrants, objectives,
getting
into opposite deployment zone, etc.)

Your opponents are usually aware of what the scenario objective is and
play
accordingly. If the mission success is determined by victory points,
they
will play differently than if it is just to grab quadrants. The last
game
you played against my brother was a good example, you killed a lot of
things
(lot of "victory points"), but failed to move and take quadrants. He
did,
and won accordingly.

So you may be *winning* most of your battles in terms of "victory
points/
kill ratios", but this mean nothing in missions whose victory conditions
are
NOT based on victory points.

You just need to adjust your focus when you play away from just killing
everything that moves, to what needs to be done to achieve the mission
objectives. Then we can see if your above claim will hold true.

I play the IXth Legion, recruited from the tributary Kingdom of Phoenix
Hunter Green with Metallic Gold Trim. Insignia is a Golden IX with
Black shadowing.
The color of the right should pad depends on the function:
Tac: hunter green
Assault: black
Vet: enchanted blue
Command: gold
All with golden trim.
Still deciding the scheme for the termies....

Primarily Grey Knights (Chapter Secundus), with a smattering of Howling
Griffons, Fire Angels, Red Scorpions, and Lamenters, just for kicks. I'm
also painting a couple of personalities for my friend's Black Templars force
and doing a lot of work for another friend's Space Wolves force.

The only Chapter I've created myself (besides the obvious interpretive work
I did on the GKs -- but that's a whole 'nother thread) is called the Hell
Hounds. Burnished bronze armour, black shoulder pads, dark yellow eyepieces,
helmets in the Company colours. Imperial Fists successor from the founding
just before the "Lost Founding" (can't remember the number offhand right
now...).
