20 for 20 clan rats, and 30 for 20 Stormvermin, though.

i thought that when i saw the preview models. now i've seen more of them
though, i've definitely changed my mind.
Sad really huh?
Hmm, the only ones on the website that seem dreadful are the bizarrely-
distorted special characters, who will hopefully not be necessary in
most armies. The Stormvermin and Clanrats are pretty good, and while
I'm not sure about the strange tendril things at the front, the
Doomwheel's okay.

i don't like the cartoony faces et al. clanrats look like the fucking
Rescuers on meth.
The screaming bell / plague furnace is massive.
35 is still kinda expensive for it though.
Where's that? Didn't see it on the advance orders. I rather like the
existing Screaming Bell.
Whatever they look like, it's nice to have the Doomwheel back in the
list.
Phil
Ah, seen it now. It's a real shame they've felt the need to cover the
models in green gunk of some sort, since otherwise both look great.
> £35 is still kinda expensive for it though.
GW seems to be pushing a new £35 plastic kit price bracket; every army
has £18-20 squad sets and £20-25 vehicles (for 40k), and now everyone
gets a £35 vehicle set too - Marines have had the Land Raider for a
while, IG got the Valkyrie, Tyranids will get the Trygon (I'm quite
looking forward to seeing what Eldar and Tau will get); it seems the
same price structure is permeating through to WFB, with the Skaven
getting plastic 'vehicles' in both the £20 and £35 brackets, and the
Empire getting a £35 Steam Tank.
Phil
Addendum: As for expense, though - *metal* Skavenslaves? I suppose the
Skaven are getting a lot of new plastic, but still - expect a lot of
converted Clanrats instead.

I had to laugh. I went into my FLGS to buy some of the Flames of
War\Vallejo black and brown washes, and the manager had his Skaven army out
and was trying to work out how to get it tournament legal. I said to him
"you should be ok you're only talking about plastics". He said "have you
seen the price of the boxes!" Warhammer the game that's still to expensive
when you have staff discounts.
OTOH my Artizan WWII stuff arrived and it's good. NZ$15 per blister inc
shipping and the character models are the same price as the rank and file.
GW is so expensive because?

FILE IT!!
they can sort of get away with it.
Lack of competition?
not entirely... alot of the "competition" have been playing "follow
the leader" and using price points similar to GW's.
There is a distinct lack of competition in the scale of games that GW
caters too, most of the other games are squad/skirmish oriented where
GW is Platoon equivalent and beyond (going into Apocalypse level
games).
Fantasy/Sci Fi wargaming is a niche hobby with a rather finite number
of dedicated players. GW is supplementing by targeting the throw away
kid demographic and there's nothing that can be done about it really.
Add to that the minor issue that alot of the players that are "pot
commited" to Warhammer aren't going to adopt another game if they cant
use their Warhammer stuff. Which means that even if another company
writes a great game, they still have to write it in a way that will
sell more models for Games Workshop... or try to find the line where
they can make models of their own that are similar enough to stand
next to GW stuff and not get them sued into bankruptcy. (good luck)
Or said company just writes a game that people may or may not buy due
to the proliferation of books available for free on the internet.
I'd hazard a guess that GW hasn't made alot of money off of books in a
very long time.
yes.. my response is rambling and hard to follow...
Or you are simply still in the wrong hobby
http://shop.warlordgames.co.uk/28mm-celts-30-c.asp
It seems that since the days of the four wargamers in WD Paul now has
enough marauders for his chaos army...
I'd say this is competition as soon as the average 12 year old GW-
Fanboy learns to buy from other sources.
Christof
To "keep the hobby going" you kinda have to bring in the kiddies.
Gamers get older can't find the time, do other things, wife/gf more
important, die, etc.
Its a tough sell to todays playstation, xbox, computer game kiddies.
Att'n resident Fantasy Hams:
Ages ago, I considered starting a Skaven army.
Then I read the Army Book - the list looked very weak.
Now rats are all shiny again, are they worth another look?

from what i've seen they are pretty powerful now. apparently one of
their magic spells is alot like the Space Wolf Psychic Power that has
everyone nerd raging... but more powerful.

It's the spell of +5 Nerd Rage!

*shrug* not sure what the point of that article is, except possibly to sell
skaven army books. doesn't tell me anything applicable about the army
itself, or any relevant changes to it they might have made.
I'm a long time Skaven player.
You can read a lot ( and I mean a lot ) about them in recent threads over on
the warhammer forum.
They're a middle tier now, they used to be top tier and very powerful.
So I'm a bit confused what you were reading and when.
The abomination is quite powerful and one of those no-brainer choices.
With obvious-GW-standard-logic there is of course no abomination model
available at the moment.
Maybe later.
HOWEVER, the more interesting way of playing skaven using ranks and flanks
no longer works.
The new clanrats are very nice and much finer than old plastics. You can't
really have anatomically correct giant ratmen... but they have
human-correct scaled hands.
The other new models are very nice.
The rat wheel is lovely. Although you will have to make sub assemblies,
paint them and stick em together.
The bell/furnace model looks really good as well.
Overall they will play rather differently from the old rats.
For example night runners are now a formed infantry block - rather bizarrely
if you ask me.
The ratling has to roll to hit so is pretty rubbish whilst the flamer hits
anything touched ( no 4+ for partials ).
One of the more interesting weapons team is the close combat one which
causes d3 impact on charge plus artillery dice number of hits in cc phase.
If you like gizmos and you like applying skill to manoeuvre then you can
probably do reasonable well.
If you just like to line em up and push forward then you will not do so
well.
