I'm new to the game (reading the rulebook at the moment) but i would like
starting painting miniatures. I'm interested in a Vampire army but don't
know what to buy. Actually I only have 6 Dire wolves so any suggestion on
what I need for a 2.5K points army will be very appreciated.

Thank you.

Lots of skeletons, some magic user vampires to raise more skeletons. Masses
of skeletons are cool.

Claudio: Whatever this troll says, your post was properly tagged [WHFB] and
you asked a valid question. As you can see you have a few helpful answers

be useful whatever bloodline you use.

Thanks all for quick replyes (all but Watcher ;-) )
With regard to the Blood Line, I think I will choose the Von Carstein (I'm
referring to the Italian version - hope the English one has the same name).
Ok, so next buy will be a regiment of skeletons and a regiment of zombies.
I will end up with 20 skeletons, 20 zombies, 6 Dire wolves and a general
(not choosen yet). Can I start to play friendly games with this roster?
Last question, then I will stop bothering you: how do I have to equip my
skeletons? What's the best weapon-armour combo?

Thanks all again and sorry for my poor English (but, ehy, you don't speak
Italian at all ;-) )

I think I like the Lahmians the best.

You could probably get away with a 500 point game just to see how the
game plays, but you really do need more troops in order to get a
better idea of how your army will play.

As for equipping your Skeletons: you want at least one unit with
Spears & Shields, so start there. When you've got 35 to 45 of them
ready, you can begin working on basic Skeletons with shields. Contrary
to many people's opinions, I like to put light armor on my Spear
wielding Skeletons.

Other suggested troops are a Bat Swarm or two and more Dire Wolves
(since you've chosen Von Carstein). Spirit Hosts are relatively easy
to make - just pick a selection of models from other ranges and paint
them up like ghosts.

It does, and good choice for the beginner. Von Carsteins have no
special rules and are flexible, being good fighters and spell casters.

Get a Carstein vampire on foot and a Necromancer.

Can I start to play friendly games with this roster?

With the above, yes.

You really don't have much choice these days. Build you first unit of
skellies with basic hand weapons and shields, and pay the points for
the light armour. Don't forget your standard bearer, musician, and
champ. When you buy your next box of skellies, build them with spears.

You can get into the better units later. The next thing I would buy is
a bunch of ghouls. They are a bit pricy; you might want to check out
ebay or any discount online stores you can find. For now, though,
you'll need skeletons and zombies, probably 3 boxes of skeletons and
two of zombies, total. One of your best spells raises zombies and
skeletons, so you'll need plenty of spares.

Actually your English is very good, better than many of the
English-speakers that post here! But if you could tell me how to say
"Fuck off!" in Italiano, I'd be much obliged.

you got it; though i would buy an empire box of knights (8 in the box, it's
cheap) as your black knights, replace the human heads with your extra
skulls, and proceed to kick some can when you as start playing.

actually.. if you want to go conversion bonkers and spend a ton of
cash.. just get the sprues with the Knights... spare skeleton heads
and then mount them on the metal skeleton steeds that come with the
mounted Vampire Lord and Mounted Wight Lord.

be sure to cut some gashes into their armor...

Von Carsteins are pretty decent - and they have that nifty ring... :)
I prefer Strigoi myself, but then a lot of that is because the other
bloodlines are played by more players.
Anyhow, as others have noted, yes you can start playing with the basic
force you've noted above - just don't expect a whole lot and don't
face Empire with a force this small, you'll get jobbed. As for your
skellies, again as noted, spears and shields are a good way to go.
You at least have a 6+ save then and can potentially survive a S3
wound. Beyond that you need to decide which is more important: more
troops or light armor. If you feel you'll be able to summon enough
troops throughout the game, go with the armor, otherwise go troops.
Also, if you know you'll be facing a lot of troops that do S4 or
better wounds on a regular basis, buying the armor isn't worth it,
definitely need troops to try and overwhelm the enemy with numbers.

To go back and answer your original question of a good expansion to
get to 2500, yet again as noted zombs and skels are the first best
place to start. After that, expand out your wolves, get a handful of
ghouls, a vamp (obviously), at least one necromancer, grave guard, and
black knights. Yes the last two are expected, but they have a lot of
punch and can wreck battle plans if placed properly and used as
planned during the game. After you have a large number (50+) of zombs
and skels, a nice group of 10-20 ghouls, a block of wolves near 10, gg
from 10-20, and black knights from 8-14 then you can build elsewhere.
This should give a good selection to choose from based upon what you
want to achieve.

I find a very useful model to be the banshee. Yeah it can be useless
sometimes in battle and has a tendency to need to be protected, but
against the right army it can hurt them badly, especially if you
damage a centrally positioned regiment enough. Some armies they'll be
useless though - esp. any that have a good number of "immune to
psychology" units and those that have a lot of high-ld units. You'll
also want some sort of flyer, be it a bat swarm or fell bats. They
can get to war machines quicker (if protected) and can save a lot of
your slow folk in the long haul. They're also quite splendid in
sieges as the attacker.

At this point you can start to ice the cake: bat swarms/fell bats
(whichever you didn't get before), a black coach (it -does- have it's
uses in higher-pt games), wraiths, spirit hosts, and more unit
expansion. But then by this point you're pushing 3-4k in force.

The VCs do look cool on the battlefield when fully painted, and can be
fun to play, but also a bit challenging due to an extreme reliance
upon magic and a severe lack of shootiness or any real speed beyond
the flyers and the knights/wolves. In addition, their core troops,
while fearsome in numbers, crumble easily. Hence the ability to
create more mid-battle via spells.

Hopefully some of this you'll find useful. Good luck with your
gaming... let's expand death's grip one more time. *grin*

-Paul
