What's everybody up to in their painting and modelling part of the Hobby?
I've got approximately 200 metal saurus and temple guard that some guy wants
me to drybrush for him. Sometimes you got to doubt the sanity of people when
they send a half grand by post. When I'm not painting saurus I'm painting up
some beastmen for 40k and making escher heavy weapons teams for my traitors
army.

I'm painting the last three squads of Tallan for my IG (~200 painted, with
only ~40 or so left!). Futsing with Grey Knight Terminators, which while
incredible models, are really not horribly creative to paint. I have some
Dire Avengers I bought on a whim to paint up, as well as a Tac Squad. I'm
already regretting even thinking about starting a second (or third) army.
With the IG almost done, I'm looking forward to returning to "fun" painting.
I have my eye on some reaper figs that i'm gonna attack one I'm done with
the IG.

Of course, once I"m done with my IG, the Kasrkin will be in stores, which
combined with the new codex, means I'll need to do some more work....

Wondering if armies are ever really finished,

Far less than I'd have liked. I've done a bit of assembly and touch up
painting, but other than that, progress has basically stalled. I figure to
work at finishing the Defilers and painting up the primed models before
tackling newer stuff.

Why? Anybody can drybrush.

As for myself, I'm just about to finish 10 Stormtroopers (the bases need a
few patches of static grass) and a converted officer. I'm also touching up
some old metal Night Goblins for a smallish (I'm guessing 30 players at
most) tournament this weekend. I really hope I can finish them in time as
I've taken a bunch of them off their bases to go on regimental ones.

I'm also building an Orc Battle Standard Bearer based on Grimgor Ironhide.
My original intention was to complete it for this tournament, but work got
in the way. Other plans include more Stormtroopers, and then some IG HQ
models and Daemonhunter conversions.

I *still* haven't finished off those last four Sisters for my army. (With the
new book and likely restructuring going to happen, coupled with my lack of
playing lately, I haven't had the impetus.)
I have however aquired two Cygnar steamjacks and have been painting them up. I
also found some of my old Servitor collection (I was making an AdMech army for
v2 rules) and have been playing with them. I also found an old Legions Of Steel
Mk1 Fiend that I've been trying to paint so it looks like reflective chrome.
Haven't quite got it yet. I'll do pictures if it turns out to be other then
poo.

This isn't possible without proper surface preparation. It needs to be pretty
smooth to look like chrome. That said, modern hobby paint has come a long way
and you should be able to chrome it.

It is smooth. It's less the chrome and more the reflective that I was going
after. I painted the whole thing silver with a strong black wash. Then did a
thin green wash to the bottom halves of the plates, and thin blue wash to the
top. It's not quite right, and I've been playing with it to try and get it to
work out.

No. He wants them exactly the way I have previously done in my beastmen army
I sold. I even provided him with demo models of proper layering using inks
and highlighting and is adamant about the dry effect. Not anyone can
drybrush. He says he has a nervous condition which stops him from painting
and is evident in the figures he's given me to redo.

I'm busy finishing my High elves. I have only really started in the last
year seriously, and have acquired a high Elf army slowly, and in fell swoops
bought in entirety a D.Elf and Lizardmen force. A friend wanted to buy a
Tomb Kings army and sold me 4000 points of D.I.'so for AU $400, and another
mate bought 3 5th Ed boxes when they were going for $50 each , and so I have
three sets of Lizardmen basic troops I picked up for AU$70.

I have everything on glued, on base, undercoated and with any potential
metal painted black. I call that state 'Black and Base Ready", or BBR.

The H.E. cav (20 S.h. 8 ER 8 DR) are all at the point where the horses are
complete, but the riders are only BBR. The spears (60) are all BBr with the
metal and colours done, but the accessories are lacking. the archers (60)
are done less the bow and leather. The 25 Lion guard are BBR with the axes
and cloaks done - I can't get a good white lion, even following WD
instructions. The dragons are complete, the 6 repeater crossbows are
complete.

The dark Elves cav are all horse 12 DR and 12 CO complete, but all the
riders are stuck on flying bases ready to be done. Everything else is being
left BBR only until the HE are tournament ready. That is 48 rpt cbows, 48
Executes, 24 WE, 2 lrge Rpt Cbows, and 24 corsairs.

All of my Lizards are done, and I chose to go through two cans of bad moon
yellow pray paint to do it, giving them all a mild lime green ink wash to
give them a light yellow, slimy look like one of the local gekkoes around my
area.

So my aim is to get my HE army painted, and will in fact be back at that
tonight, MTV on in the background, and a nice curry to pick at while I work.

Now that you've done that, you could actually go back with a fine
thin brush and your silver paint, and apply very thin streaks of silver on
the areas you want to be most reflective, while still allowing the
underlying values and colors to show through. To do this effectively, the
silver paint would need to be flowing well (i.e. get fresh paint once the
stuff on the pallet starts to dry on you). Get your brush loaded paint so
that the paint is flowing from it easily (just don't overload it so that
the paint comes out excessively or in globs). Then start your stroke in
the area you've shaded or colored with just the lightest of pressure, and
then pull towards the area you want to have be the most reflective while
gently increasing the pressure of your stroke. This should give sort of
an elongated tear drop shape to your stroke with the most paint being left
in the area where you want your highlight or reflection to be seen. By
feathering out the silver you can achive your reflective areas and allow
the shadows and underlying colors to remain and be seen, but still tie the
area together as a whole rather than having it look disjointed or seperate
parts.

Oh dear, you mean we're supposed to be doing more than just reading this
group ?

Seriously, not much. Mostly terrain pieces, but autumn's coming & the nights
are drawing in, so I might get a bit more done.

I currently have an Imperial command bunker, a Necron obelisk and an alien
artefact of "unknown origin" in various stages of completion, all made out
of card. Also a cardboard Chimera which is about 95% finished, and an =][=
scale Sentinel (also out of cardboard) which is close to being done, just
trying to locate a pilot/driver/whatever.

Then I've just picked up eight old metal Cadians, which are destined to be a
small Skitarii squad, but that'll take a while . . . .

Cheers, Martyn

Oooers. I'll never, ever get to play a game at this rate.

I've Just finished a squad of metal Cadians. Of course that took about
three months in between very long sessions of Jedi Knight and a really hot
and dry summer. More Guard squads and a comand Rhino are on the way, so
long as I get around to buying an air compressor.

I also have a T-bolt Mountain Blue Dragon that's been sitting on my
worktable since 2001. I don't know when I'll ever get around to finishing
it.

I think you've gone about as far as you can with silver paint. What I'd do now
is to highlight with silver and white. But that'll still not quite be what you
want.

What you're probably looking for is chrome paint, true metal stuff. I know it
exists, and it'll give a true reflective surface.

Dunno what that is...
There are three ways to get a chrome effect:

1) Apply metal foil/leaf, this is what model plane people do.
2) Electro-plate
3) Burnish.

For burnishing, your figure must be of metal ( obviously ) as you're
polishing the metal.
Clean up the figure, rub down with a wire brush and polish with a bodkin.

Well, at the moment I'm doing almost nothing. I finished few weeks ago
20 cadians in camocolors and converted cameleoline cloaks. 20 painted,
but not assembled without cloaks and 20 more unpainted and unassembled.
Then there's two heavy weapon squad boxes and I plan to use all heavy
weapons in them.

There might be small chance that I could even finish this army painted
and converted instead of using it as unpainted like last all-infantry IG
army I collected.

Contracts all finished so finally I have time to paint! I've gotten more
done in last week than about the last 2 months.

Going over my CSMs and doing details I've missed. eg making sure everyone
has the wire-thorn pattern on their shoulder pads. General touchups. Fixing
broken spikey bitz. Inks and highlights. Repainting some of my oldest
and yukkiest models etc
All minor stuff but is making that army look a lot nicer.

Also working on an Epic force. 2500 points of chaos. Which is different
and quite fun.

And worked on when I feel like it are my lost and the damned. I don't play
these much as frankly its a hassle to pack up but still its an occasional
nice change from the pure CSMs.
WFB chaos warriors as mutants with bloated/carapace.
Bunches of mostly orlocks led by Tzeentch sorc champs.

And my skaven are waiting for a few deliveries before I switch my
attention to them.
