I'm working on writing my doctoral dissertation. I have to have it ready to
defend by April 1st, ready to turn in to the college by May 1st. I've written
1 chapter.
I have also:
Assembled, primed, and painted 4 Reaper CAV minis.
Painted a Crucible Bane Fiend, as well as primed and partially painted a
Principate Ogre and VOR Golem.
Finished painting the last 9 marines in my BA army, including converting two
scout sergeants to carry powerswords and one tactical sergeant to have
greenstuff-modeled termy honors and a power axe.
Assembled and primed two Razorbacks... still working on their searchlights, I
go shopping tomorrow... ;0
Converted a dreadnought to have a plasma cannon arm, a lightning claw, and for
kicks, wings.
Assembled and primed 6 Chaos Termies, a Chaos Lord, a Chaos Raptor, and a
Culexus assassin.
Assembled and primed 3 Confrontation Fusiliers, as well as two Enforcers and an
Exo-Suit Light Flamer for VOID.
Assembled a Ronin mech. Working on number 2 as soon as I finish coughing up
the alloy dust from the last one.
And started painting a Reaper mini called Marda of the North, and something
which I believe is called a Doomsday Proclaimer from the Warzone line.
So my advice would have to be: if you want to put the thrill back into
painting, have a major project vital to your future existence hanging over your
head. ;)
-David
Nothing like procrastination...
At least I have until July 2 for first submission and August 6 for final. At
least I have the Intro about 75% complete and the Methods about 90% done.
>So my advice would have to be: if you want to put the thrill back into

So the logic is:
painting is stress relief and a major project generates stress, so you tend to
paint more to relieve the stress. Therefore, to get more painting done, you
need to add a major project to your life.
Scary thing is, it makes perfect sense to me......

Pick up a couple of models (like one blister) from another army and paint
'em. One of two things will happen. Either it'll get you back in the mood
to paint, and you'll be happy to go back to your marines, OR you'll really
like painting the new army and decide that you need to buy them to/instead.
The biggest danger of this method -- before you know it you've got 9 or 10
armies. (oops.)

Start working in smaller batches and shorter time periods. When the thought of
painting 10 figures at a 2-hour sitting can put you off, facing 2 figures for
ten minutes at a time can be less intimidating.
A) Don't buy any more models
B) Sort your unpainted models into units. Sort thes units into things you'd
enjoy painting, things you wouldn't, and things you need to paint. Label these
A, B and C
C) Paint a B unit, then a C unit, then an A unit. Repeat untill your army is
painted.

As you can see I very the work so it is not to boring, I also keep a few
other models around to paint on just in case skinks start to really piss me
off, if you primarily play 40K pick up a few fantasy figs (or historical),
if you play fantasy pick up a few spacemarines, they are a diversion and not
the main focus of your painting, (I have a barbarian figure that I have been
painting off and on for seven months now). the idea here is you don't care
about finishing the diversion figure, it is just something to do to keep you
painting!

Agreed. I needed to paint 25 Bretonnian halberdiers and broke them into
groups of 6, 6, 6, and 7.

Buzzzt. Wrong answer I think. You run the danger of making one model too
good and then crawling through the rest. As in, "Why the devil did I bother
painting belt buckles on these guys?" If you want to prototype, use the
first GROUP.
> Try and break down the colors
When all else fails, DRAG yourself to the painting table, even if for only
15 minutes. I had some mounted squires to paint and I finally ended up
saying. OK, I'm only going to paint the reigns after that I quit. Then
again the next day...OK, I'm only going to paint the hands and faces. After
a few days they start getting near done and the excitement to get it
finished will hopefully carry you through.

I agree but "diversion" should still be useful. For example, I have some
Howling Banshees on the table as well as War of the Roses figures. They are
to be added to my armies, eventually, and break up the painting of
Bretonnians.

Hmmm I can see where this might not work for some people, let me expound a
bit, When I paint a prototype figure, I take notes on exactly what I do,
that way, if I end up taking a long break I can refer to the notes to set me
straight. In addition if I want to get the same affect years later, I can
still have my notes. This is not necessary for everyone, but since I also
paint armies for money, I find it useful. The last reason I do a prototype
is to show other people what the finished models will look like. I tend to
forget that not everyone does the same things I do...
It is good advice for the average painter (not quality here guys but people
that paint only what they need) to use their first BATCH as a prototype,
remember that it is easier to ADD a detail then to remove it!

Let your imagination roam while painting, Wiloe painting Bretonnians imagine
them going on a holy quest as you paint them, this will sometimes take your
mind off the drudgery!

Being a D&D DM, I ALWAYS have other things to paint and can use damn near
anything!
I get uninspired with Warhammer after just being in the same room with
the local Warhammer munchkins.... I'd hate to see what would happen if
I actually played against some of them... I'd probably burn my
models...
It's tough sometimes... I haven't had the time or the inclination to
get jack and/or shit done since this semester started (I think it has
something to do with me knowing more about calculus than my calculus
teacher... and I don't know shit about calculus)...
try to break up the process.. I work on multiple armies at one time
when I paint... like if i had the time right now (SPRING BREAK!!!!!)
I'd be working on Ultramarines, Imperial Guard, Fantasy Orcs and Chaos
Marines.. it keeps things varied....
I've found that occasionally GW does put a helpful article in the
catalog (WD) and in one painting article they mention painting a
character/monster/war machine and then painting a regiment and going
back and forth....(though if I don't find enough Dark Elf Executioners
to finish that unit.. there's little reason for me to paint the army)
another idea would be to schedule yourself... like "today i'm going to
do the chain mail on this regiment of Dark Elves" and "tomorrow, I'll
do their belts, pouches and boots" I think I might start doing that...
finding the time is a real bitch though right now when I have an hour
commute (1 way) back and forth from college, an incompetant Calculus
teacher and a chemistry teacher that's a raving chinese bitch....
Per system, of course.
-SM, DE, IG, 3 CM, Orks, Tyrs, Sqts
-Emp, Orc, Bret, Beastm, Lizd, CWar, Daem, Skav, Fimir, Haflg
Yup, that's about right.

Ouch that's a bitch of a commute, at least it's nice to know that other
things in college don't change (the instructors)..

Ah, but you've painted stuff since then. . .
RTM
-I win-
Well true, but I haven't painted any Napoleonic mini's since then and that
was after all what it was. Fact is I haven't painted any historical stuff
in so long it isn't funny, I'm thinking about getting DBM just to try and
get back into ancients but I have not yet made up my mind...
Firstly, I never do more than 5-10 figs at a time. When the enthusiasm
drops off, I try really hard to polish off the few I've got on the table,
then start a terrain piece. Making terrain is much simpler than painting
minis and helps relieve the burn-out. The toughest thing for me is trying
to return to complete some half-painted figs I started 6 weeks ago that I'm
sick of looking at.

I've got three figs in my case that are half
done from the summer.

I think I have you beat, I found an old figure the other day that I had
started to paint before I went to Germany, in 1978! I thought it was lost

Khorne chaos marines, nurgle chaos marines, imperial guard, orks,
genestealer/chaos cult, Dark eldar
High elves, undead, orcs & gobbos and lizardmen (don't play as much
warhammer as 40k).
I used to have a chaos army for warhammer, but stopped playing with it
when they switched to separating out the warriors and the beastmen. Now
most of the parts of that have either been converted or are waiting to be
converted for inclusion in my chaos marine armies or the genestealer/chaos
cult forces. Makes them more fun that way, because I get to convert them
heavily in the process. Mostly adding warriors to the chaos marines and
beastmen to my cult.
