I've asked this question before some years ago with dubious results, so I'll
ask it again given new versions and army books since then.

What's the most appropriate way to use a Gene Cult in 5th edition? Base it
on a 'nid list? Work from an IG list? I've previously used the WH list as
this has arco flagellants which are somewhat similar to 'stealers while also
allowing for IGmen.

Any thoughts from the group? I'd really like to get this cult playing again.

Maybe you could combine the IG and 'Nid lists somewhat pull some from
each for what fit. Wouldn't be tourney legal and maybe not play in
store but you could get an idea and maybe make your own list.

Else maybe use just the IG list and say they are from a weird world or
something. They could be the what you get when the stealers start
taking over and here come the marines to purge them

Do you want to stick to GW codexes?

If not, and your opponents agree to let you use it, then how about the Bell
of Lost Souls cult list?

Try the new 'mini-dex' from Bell of Lost Souls. It's about as
'official' as you'll likely see and much of their stuff is at least play
tested and somewhat balanced.

Mini-dex download section.

(You're looking for Genestealer Cult v2.0)

You might also check Yahoo Groups and see if there's a Genestealer /
Space Hulk related group. I know there's one for the Adeptus Arbiters
that even has some folks from GW contribute occassionally.

Hope that helps,

HQ: Patriarch, Magus
EL: Stealer, Hybrid
TR: Brother, Initiate
FA: Truck, Bike, Lictor?
HS: Tank, Comrade, Monster

If you want no guff about unofficial rules, get the Ork dex.
Then, just substitute the GSC Unit names:

HQ
Pat/ Magus = Any Ork Characters

EL
Hybrids = Meganobz/ Lootaz
Stealers = Nobz/ Burnaz

Brothers = Boyz
Initiates = Grots

FA
Trucks = Buggies
Bikes = Warbikers
Lictors = Koptas

HS
Tank = Battlewagon/ Big Gunz
Comrades = Flash Gitz
Monster = Dreads/ Kans

Hive Mind = Waaagh.
You get the idea.

Then, your army'll be all official-like.

I think you might be on to something here! I was reading this last night:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Gorgon%27s_Genestealer_Cult
which plays on the Ork theme. I'll have to grab the 'dex and see how
suitable it is for my needs. Is there a 5th ed. copy out?

I don't accept the argument that Lictors belong in a GSC. Scouting Lictors?
There GS in a cult are the scouts for the 'nids. I think the concept has
been developed to beef up the army rather than fit the fluff. People do seem
to do it a lot though, where did this start?

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'd prefer it just so I don't have to explain what I'm using, where I got it
from etc to every new opponent. Bad enough explaining what a GSC is half the
time.

I don't think I've seen this and yet the pictures look very familiar. Maybe
they're just recycled or maybe I have read this after all. It seems like a
sound list and I'll have a play around with it. Thanks for the heads up and
I'll report back with how it goes.

I have used it, with about equal success and failure over the years. My old
gaming group accepted the BOLS list as "nearest thing there is to official
without being official". Unfortunately, my current gaming club are not so
tolerant, as most games count towards the league, and only allow unofficial
army lists in "Friendy" games.

My own preference is to use Impy guard list (for brethren) and the 'nid list
(for the genestealers) , limiting the vehicles to one or two tanks and the
old style trukks from the ork list.

As an asde I use the Necromuna Goliaths as Brood Brothers, and replace the
moveable arm with a genestaler arm for hybrids.

Yeah, I found that puzzling as well. Must be a Fly Lord thing.
Fwiw, I have issues with using "unlocking" Units, too.
If you can find it, the v1 BoLS list was more true.

> I think the concept has

Eh, this time it seems more model-driven, imo.
At least, that's the most obvious motive.

> People do seem
> to do it a lot though, where did this start?

Wouldn't you tailor your list to the models at hand?
But yeah, updating the old Huckelbery list seems more natural -

HQ
0-1 Magus (Psyker/ Armoury) + Bodyguard Initiates
0-1 Pat (Psyker) + Bodyguard Stealers
0-2 Heierarch (Magus Lite)
Transport: Limo (No upgrades)

EL
0-3 Stealers (3-12)
0-3 Hybrids (Armoury/ 5-20)

TR
2-6 Brothers (Armoury/ 5-10)
0-6 Initiates (Armoury/ 10-50)

FA
0-3 Sentinels (1-3)
0-3 Bikers (3-12)
0-3 Trucks (1 w/ Armoury)

HS
0-3 (IG) Russ
0-2 (IG) HW Teams
0-3 (SM) Pred
0-3 (SM) Rhino (50pts)

Roll your own v5 Psi/Gear/Special Rules. Done.

What about straight 'nid?

HQ:
Hive Tyrant (hth only option if available?) = Patriarch
Tyrant Guard = GS bodyguard
Broodlord = Broodlord

TROOPS:
Termigaunts = Either Hybrid or BB
Hormigaunts = Either Hybrid or BB (opposite of Termigaunt)

Ripper Swarm = Genestealer Familiars? lol

Carnifex = Gene monster

Yes, I just checked that account and I gave your email a through
reading so I've got a good idea of what your end of things is. Don't
envy you the aggrivation. As for the new counters - I've been up to my
eye-balls in alligators at work lately (Dealing with aging PC hardware,
moving our testing center {with testing stations from two different
venders, one of which is damn near useless on tech support}, just
finished up supporting an off-site testing center, and trying to learn
how half the stuff I'm supposed to maintain actually works, plus the
joys of generally dealing with users unhappy about something...) The
more I work in the I.T. field, the more I enjoy playing First person
shooter games. ;) I have plenty of ideas for new items to add to the
counters list, but far to little time to do it.

Sounds oddly familiar ...

In the past 3 weeks I've had the entire RAID array (3 drives in a RAID5
array of 5 drives with hotspare went down on the same day!) on the company
file server fail (the server is almost 10 years old), and had to swap in
hardware from our mail server (so that's now running on a desktop PC in the
interim) as we already had a new server on order to replace the file server.
The new server arrived Friday, and later that day our secondary web server
lost a drive in it's RAID array (3 drives RAID5, so that's now running
degraded and if I was a betting man I'd put money on it being dead by the
end of the week, but it was due to be consolidated onto another server
anyway).

And I'm also planning the company move to a new office. So that's
transplanting the entire network setup here with minimal downtime and
configuration changes. All our public IPs are changing, so I also have to
set up a reverse SSL proxy at this office to handle all the requests that
will come in during the transition period for DNS and feed out the responses
from the new public addresses. I've also got to build a server cabinet in
the new office and wire it all up because there's not enough room in the
building comms room to fit all our servers in, so the non-critical ones will
be in the office itself. Part of that includes another new server which has
a 3 week lead time - and we're supposed to be moving in 5 weeks ish, which
means not only am I frantically configuring a mail/DNS/web server that will
also be a DR staging system if required (Windows server VMs in XenServer),
I've also got to set up and configure the other new server coming in (which
will replace the file server, just hoping it makes it) to be a file,
application, print, and DR staging server (again, under XenServer). The end
result should be 5 current non-critical servers condensed down onto 2 and
enough spare capacity to deal with anything that might come up in the next
few years.

I also enjoy FPS games, but don't get chance at work (and besides, the
hardware is crap in these work desktop PCs, my kids have a better PC at
home!), not like the old days when we used to run Doom, Quake, and UT on the
company network at lunchtimes. Although I'm testing the next release of Buccaneer:
Pursuit of Infamy at the moment, which is a 3rd person pirate ship arcade
game - the new co-op play is good fun :)
