Was browsing through the GW Chicago Golden Demon page:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/winners.htm
and noticed there were a lot of niggling little things about most of the
winning minis that bothered me. Now granted, my own painting/converting is
nowhere near GD level but I figured I'd take the old adage to heart, "If you
can't join them, criticize them!" So without further ado:

Slayer Axe Award Winner:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/slayer.htm
Good for Jennifer Haley. I've been seeing her work around the net for the
last year or so and she always does an excellent job of bringing out the
details of a mini without resorting to light pastels or the bright garish
"cartoon character" colors we see so much of. Her subtle conversion work is
equally nice. With her color choices and artistic sensibilities she is
easily one of the best realist painters around.

Best Warhammer 40,000 Single Miniature:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/40K_single/1.htm
This is either yet another painter who has no idea what fire looks like or
those skulls have got some really funky red hairdos. If they're supposed to
be flames then they're sculpted badly too. Oh well, the rest of the mini is
pretty good, a little busy but chaos and orks can get away with a bit of
clutter on 'em. The organic cape is too bright though.

Best Warhammer 40,000 Squad:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/02.htm
This diorama attempts to recreate the scene on the cover of Codex Space
Marines. The individual conversions look vary good (though some close ups
would be nice) capturing the look of the figures on the codex perfectly.
Unfortunately since entrances must be legal, Matt Verzani was only able to
use 10 marines so his diorama really doesn't convey the crowded massed ranks
that the cover art does. With only 10 minis he should have used a smaller
base and bunched the marines together more.

Best Warhammer 40,000 Vehicle or Squadron:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/40K_vehicle/1.htm
The detail inside the vehicle is nice but the paintjob isn't particularly
spectacular. No surprise that the winning entry was the new rhino.

Best Warhammer 40,000 Large Monster:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/04.htm
A heavily converted figure that doesn't glaringly look like a conversion
(except for maybe the added lictor claws). Once again Ms. Haley has stuck
with mostly darker realistic tones and used more subtle highlighting and
shading techniques to bring out the details.

Best Warhammer Single Miniature:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/WHFB_single/1.htm
See above.

Best Warhammer Regiment:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/06.htm
Ug, pastels. I guess the more "delicate" colors look ok on elves though...

Best Warhammer Single Miniature:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/whfb_monster/1.htm
Arg, more dreaded pastels!!! Ok now this figure should definitely *not* be
painted with these wimpy light colors. Too bad an excellently converted
evil diving dragon with rider had to be ruined with such an airy-fairy paint
job.

Duel:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/08.htm
Need to see this from multiple angles to really judge it. The poses look
good. The brush textures on the ork look ok but the same technique doesn't
really look that good on space marine armor. SMs look better with cleaner
looking sharp edges and smoothly blended highlight/shading.

Best Battle Scene:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/09.htm
The title of this scene is "Empire Hero Ambushed by Goblins" but at this
distance I can only make out one green blob that appears to be a dead(?)
goblin. I'm sure it looks much better close up. The scenery looks nice
though.

Large Scale Models:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/10.htm
A typical Joe Orteza figure: bright Saturday morning cartoon colors with
*way* too much green stuff sculpted junk stuck on it. Despite supposedly
being an art teacher this guy has absolutely no sense of composition or
focus. However, this mini's not nearly as bad as some of his previous
"winners" that looked like they were made out of Play-doh so at least he's
improving.

Best Lord of the Rings Single Miniature:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/LOTR_single/1.htm
Wow, must have been slim pickings in this category if this was the best!

The Lord of the Rings:
The Fellowship of the Ring Best Complete Fellowship:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/12.htm
Looks ok but difficult to tell at this distance. Seems like it would be
very hard to do anything original in this category conversion or color wise.

Best Youngbloods:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/youngbloods/1.htm
This figure actually looks like it was painted by a younger modeler unlike
some past YB winners.

The Open Competition:
http://us.games-workshop.com/news/us/events/GamesDay2002/Chicago/Coverage/Go
ldenDemon/winners/14.htm
Wow, a Joe Orteza piece that's not buried in green stuff! "Teleport
Accident", cool concept even if it was ripped off from the Star Trek movie.
The overall design is very good but it's hard to see details at this
distance. I definitely want to see some close ups as this may actually be a
very nice piece. And to think, this from the guy who normally just eats a
box of crayons and craps all over his minis!

Well that's it for Chicago, maybe I'll criticize the Baltimore winners once
they get pics up.

There's most peoples best chance at winning a Golden Demon right there!
For the first time ever I can put my hand on my heart and say 'I can paint
better than that' when talking about a GD winner.

So any guesses as to the worst (or rather best) category to enter at the UK
Games Day?

The Chicago pictures are probably a small random snapshot of some miniatures
that where painted as the winners don't seem to be represented on the
website. Though going by GW's lowering painting standards I would not be
surprised.
