Hey,

First PS reviews mash-up from teh intarwebz:

+++

First Impression: The book is thinner than "Cities of Death" (which
was a whopping 1/4in).

Rules:

1. Choose attacker and defender.

2. Choose forces per PS force org chart.

3. Select from 6 different missions (which follow a narrative path).
Planetfall being first, then a beachhead type scenario, finishing with
the attacker wiping out the last of the defenders in a planet-
destroying finale.

4. Prepare battlefield. The defender places everything. He is
encouraged to be as devious as he wants. Place every last hill, tree,
and any amount of bastions and defensive walls.

5. Determine objectives. Any piece of terrain that can hold models and/
or has a gun should be an objective. The number of these guns is
restricted to the number of objectives agreed upon. Bastions have
built-in weapons that can autofire at BS 2 or be manned by defenders -
or attackers! - at their normal BS. The Defender picks which buildings
count as objectives, and if both attacker and defender have models
touching the building, Attacker claims the objective. All models -
except vehicles - can claim, not just troops.

6. Attacker preps invasion. After defender deploys, the attacker gets
a random number of orbital bombardments. Every attacker unit is in
(3+, 2+, auto) reserve. Infantry, jump infantry, jet bikes, and
monstrous creatures get to deep strike, everything else has to walk.
If the unit normally has Deep Strike it can assault the turn it lands.
The attacker chooses any table edge to become the 'drop zone'.

7. Determine stratagems: Each side gets points equal to the number of
Objectives in the game, and each stratagem costs 1-3pts. 1 point (CoD-
ish) Stratagems are things like 're-roll the deep strike results in
one turn' or 're-roll the to-hits for a unit one time'. The 3 point
(40kA-ish) ones allow you to drop meteors on the battle field which
produce craters (sold separately) or Deep Strike another Bastion.
There are Defender and Attacker stratagems in both generic and army-
specific flavors.

Defensive Stratagems: Laserwire, Blocking Shield, Battlecannon,
Machine Spirit, Kraktrap,
Minefield, sally port for Bastion, etc.

Assault Stratagems: Forward spotter, Planetcrusher bomb, Orbital
cutting beam, Stasis field, change two enemy units' places, Deep
Strike vehicles, etc.

The 'Fight to the death' Stratagem grants an additional player turn at
the end of the game.

8. Defender deploys ... anywhere! He can set up his entire army
anywhere he wants, and can also keep reserves, which will probably be
the key to victory for a lot of armies. However, when a Reserve unit
becomes available, it deploys randomly.

9. Attacker launches a firestorm of (d6x (No of Objectives))
Earthshaker shells with unreduced Scatter. All units are immune to
morale but not to pinning.

10. Play.

Hobby Section

Bastion: (AV14) multi-storey building with built-in heavy bolters and
roof Icarus (R96 twin-linked lascannon).

Aegis Wall: 28 inches long with a quad gun (2x T-L Autocannon).

Skyshield: Landing pad with movable side walls: When raised, they give
cover saves to units on top. Lowered, troops disembarking from landed
transports move as if the lander was stationary.

So it's not really so much of a campaign where the attacker *OR*
the defender can win. You'd have thought they could have at least come
up with something along those lines - you know - like the example in the
4th Ed Rules...

Great! This will be a bare plain with lots of fortifications and
nothing else. Ohhhh, or maybe fortifications ON HILLS! (I thought the
attacker may get to place some terrain?) Otherwise this will be one
that's going to need to be house-ruled.

Sweet! Nids with auto-cannons! Oh wait, Nid defenses consist of
mainly of large thorny brambles with signs next to them reading "Please
throw yourselves in!" Sigh...

Ahh, so no more 'contesting' an objective, the attacker is always
at the advantage. No wonder they didn't bother to write a campaign
where the defender might win...

Sounds interesting. I can see HTH dreads being popular with this.

I wonder if they cover super-heavys and Gargantuan MC's?

Deep strike a bastion?!? Fook'n A! This sounds semi interesting,
and not that different than the 'campaign system' we've been using off
and on in the Helicon Crusade campaign I run. Hopefully they've done a
better job of balance than they did on some of the 'strategic assets' in
Apoc 40K.

Deep Strike vehicles? Yikes! "I'd like to drop my BaneBlade ON
your Carnifex."

Hmmm, might be otherwise interesting. Are some or all of the
scenarios random game length?

WTF? Are we talking deep strike randomly, or are we talking
random table edge? I thought that with Gav getting his walking papers
that perhaps GW had figured out that in a game making the pretense of
being based on 'strategy' that random does NOT equal 'Chaos' or 'Fun' -
perhaps I was wrong.

Nice - no wonder you'd want a butt-load of your units in reserve.
Hell, in a game with 4 or 5 objectives, it may take half an hour just to
roll up the results on a good bombardment.

Roll D6 and determine that the attacker wins?

No wonder they're AV 14 - with the firestorm bombardment...

Now this irks me if I'm reading it correctly as it looks like the
Hydra which is also, model wise, 2 pairs of twin-linked ACs only gets 2
shots while this thing gets 4? WTF...

Not the most impressive rules gimic to sell terrain. I can model
the same thing by simply making a big landing pad with walls. This is
one piece of terrain I'm just not impressed with.

Most of this doesn't seem hideously over priced *by GW standards*,
except for the landing pad. And seriously, WTF? is up with the Chaos
Bastion? At that price it better come with an entire box of
skellingtons and zombies to decorate the outside.

In this economy! Indeed!

Thanks for the heads up.

P.S. BoLS has some more Planetstrike tidbits up as well.

It's understood at the outset that PS is not a "match" style of game.
I get the impression it's supposed to be a challenge for the
Attacker.
If he isn't slaughtered in the first Mission, they play the second,
etc.

> a bare plain with lots of fortifications and nothing else

Heh. A MEq board set-up for PS:

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/3139/psbefore.jpg

That's what Craters and Ruins now represent.
Drop Podding a Fort on someone's witch counts, too.
Also, Deep Striking a Land Raider has possibilities.

Nids infesting a captured Fort?

> "Please throw yourselves in!"

Is that a preview of your Defence Line models?
Heehee. Can't wait to see your Nid Bastions.

> at the advantage

Well, getting one model in b2b, is evidently not that easy.
Nor is keeping him there . . .

> I wonder if they cover super-heavys and Gargantuan MC's?

And Flyers? No, this is a 40k - not 40kA - expansion.
Of course, all new *Citadel* kits are still included . . .

> This sounds semi interesting

Well, debuting a homemade Tyranid "Bastion" could be . . .

> I'd like to drop my BaneBlade ON your Carnifex

Heh. Unlike Valks, not in the Dex, sorry. Close, though -
"I'll DS my first Monolith over here."

> Are we talking deep strike randomly, or are we talking

I get the impression it's edge.

I'm hoping the reviewer meant d6 *plus*, not d6 *times*.

> it looks like the

Two double-barreled shotguns are still only two guns.
My impression is "quad-bareled" = two Hit dice with rerolls.

> I can model the same thing by simply making a big landing pad with walls

Yeah, I've given lots of "Imperial Landing Pads" away.
They all started out as wire spools . . .

> the Chaos
> Bastion? At that price it better come with an entire box of

Word is, they add only two Spiky Bits sprues.

> How about that Blastscape

Worst. Craters. Ever.
They look like cow pie skid-marks.
And who doesn't already have "rubble" bases?

Why does GW even bother with these 40K rules supplements, they all pretty
much suck and just add time and a couple dice rolls to standard 40K5 games.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread at all so forgive me if I repeat
something someone else has said:

I do like the Imp bastions, Aegis fence and quad guns, and the craters
models...
I'm sure there are finely modeled 1:4 scale igloos I could buy cheaper, but
I think these are decent models. And I like the idea of the quad guns,
though I don't know the rules.
Are they considered two twin linked autocannons or a single quad linked
autocannon (three re-rolls)?

Agree on the quads and Aegis defenceworks.
But older models far better represent actual craters.
These new ones, iirc, supposedly represent crash damage.

The bastions are just silly. Dollar stores carry better terrain.
However, I know from past experience that people will still buy
bastions.
That said, I must insist that, for that money, Citadel does the heavy
lifting.

Ooh shnap!

Yes. There's also a Lascannon pintle on the temple PS kit.

Yes, you're right. I have the craters already. I like the crash debris in
these pieces. I also think they will fit in with the old MacCragge debris
that my son and I use in our extremely Terrain heavy games; which are
essentially an excuse for him to set up a "neato" looking battlefield. We
then play 40K lite. Sometimes with plastic skeletons and Indians included in
the mix.
