I have an old copy of Warhammer fantasy battle and I can't work out
whether it is a 1st or second edition. Can anyone help? I've read
other posts here which suggest both 1st and 2nd editions were boxed
and both came with 3 books, but what were the differences?

Mine is in a box the base and sides of which are basically red with
the Warhammer/Citadel logos and a drawing of a gang of orcs about to
crunch what could be a chaos warrior (or even possibly a human with a
wierd helmet!)

Inside are 3 books:
Combat
Battle Magic
Battle Bestiary

The scenario included in one of the books is "The Magnificent Sven"
and it comes with a separate sheet of card cut out characters (which
is intact) and also a separate summary of rules sheet printed on both
sides showing:
combat/to wound charts, shooting ranges, saving throws etc

I've checked the books for an edition number but the only clue is a
copyright 1984 on the box.

On the first page of the combat book is printed:

'Dedicated to Phil Barker, Donald Featherstone and Michael Moorcock
whose fault it all is'

Presumably this is the Michael Moorcock of Hawkmoon (and occasional
Hawkwind!) fame.

Any info would be appreciated.

My copy of the first edition is in a greyish box, the only art work on the
box is a warrior bashing a skeleton. It contains 3 books; Tabletop battles,
Magic and Characters. It is dated 1983.

Waggling a might hammer? Then its 2nd Edition...the rest is consistent as
well.
