I'm sure they're up in more than one place, but here's a link to
the BoLS article with better pics of the new Nid minis...
http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2009/12/40k-news-tyranids-advanced-
orders-up.html
While it's nice to know they're coming out with some 'big kits'
for the Nids, I'm unimpressed with the plastic Trygon. The head doesn't
do much for me, and combined with the 'stubby' arms I find it pretty
"Meh" overall. The Mawloc better come with some pretty interesting
rules, because model wise - it's down right ugly. And not in a 'cool'
way. If you've ever wondered what it would look like if an upside down
christmas tree exploded - this is pretty much it.
The new pyro-vore on the otherhand is much improved. Gone is the
look of constipation. This thing looks like it wants to do some damage,
and not like it just realized it shouldn't have eaten that third block
of cheese.
The new tyrant guard is just as disappointing to me as the 4th
edition tyrant guards. It's new weapon looks like nothing more than a
remodeled venom cannon. The red and pink color scheme isn't exactly
helping it out either...
And last but not least - the venomthorpe. Which comes off as "I
ran out of ideas so I simply rummaged through my bits box." kind of bad.
And if the top of that thing isn't plastic, it's going to earn itself
the 'worst metal mini design of the year' award too. Who honestly
though a huge metal top heavy mini on a dinky metal post was a good
idea?!? Seriously? It was a crap design on the 4th Edition Zoanthrope,
and it's even worse here. It's going to take A LOT of scenic basing to
support this thing. Otherwise, buy glue. Lots of glue...

All good (color) choices, but they don't carry the impact of the #7
"Over-ripe bananagaunt." Nothing says fear the tyranids like slightly
aged fruit.

My rule of thumb is 'it has to look good at arm's length'.
Otherwise, it's almost always too busy/ overdone.
That's the case here - it doesn't look special.

It's the new Red Terror.

That's not saying much, imo. Still a silly name, too.
I note that its vital "gun" looks completely unarmored.

A slight improvement. Their v4 rules were stupid, though.
This new one's that >< close to being a v5 Zoat.

I'm not sold on the whole Eric Halfasnake form.
It seems as lame as the Floating Brain idea.
And how old is Carpenter's _The Thing_?
Imo, Nids should ALL seem chitinous - no squishy ones in there.
It's not as though there aren't enough insects to serve as
inspiration!

See the DE Talos model re: identical ignorance of basic physics.
Are the preview Codexes are in stores, yet?
I'd heard there was a problem with the print run.

I'm actually liking the looks of the plastic Gargoyles - though it'll
cost a fair bit if one wants to make a decent sized unit or two of them,
but still far FAR better than buying the craptacular metal ones.
Like the pyro-vore, but looking at it along side the current biovore
makes the current vore look even worse - "My Doctor says I have to take
a laxative!!!"
Still not sold on the 'Hive Guard' - ranged indirect cannon or not - and
the fact that it has no more detail than the warriors, carnifex, or
raveners, but only comes in metal is definitely a turn off for me.
Venomthrope - top heavy & all metal - enough said.

Scale wise, it would fit the fluff...

Butt-ugly. And seriously, who looked at that model and said "You
know what? Some goofy 'Walt Disney bug antenna' would look great!"

True, but they didn't make it suck like this.

The unarmored gun doesn't bother me over all. It still looks like
it wants to kill something. The Bio-vore 4th Ed model looks like it
wants a laxative and a joint so it can get stoned and crap its pants.

Technically it sounds like they're 'Hive Guard' and thus some sort
of addition rather than a replacement for the Tyrant Guard. Which means
we're still stuck with 'Guards in the Mist' co-starring Jane Goodall.

Nothing says 'Species that survives space travel without metal
spaceships' like a squishy unarmored body.

GW Employee: Cha-Ching$$$ - Thanks for the money. Oh, and by the way,
your mini will self-destruct. It's only a matter of time. Want me to
reserve another copy for you?

I'm baffled as to why they make any of these big beasties in metal, let
alone one that's so complicated, top and front heavy and balanced on such a
tiny point.
Madness.
the visual effect is somewhat undermined (hee-haw) by the fact that it
couldn't, physiologically speaking, actually dig a tunnel with EITHER set of
talons... but then, asking for models consistent with the background text
would just be unreasonable.
> Venomthrope - top heavy & all metal - enough said.
wait, that thing is metal?? what the everfucking shit are they putting in
the coffee machines at GWHQ?
They are drunk with the blood of their victims, er customers.

remember when they stopped using lead for the models back in the day
and had to pull everything?

I'm already guessing that there'll be some sort of 'deep strike jammer'
coming out for standard 40K before to long. At a nominal price for the
'upgrade sprue'.

Craig (If my job and family situation was rectified, I might even play 40K5)
Nids, Orks, & IG are all rapidly approaching WFB levels in terms
of numbers of meat-shields one ends up with on the table top if not
playing a Mech / Nidzilla style army.

Sorry to hear things are working out great on that front. It's
hard enough figuring yourself out most days - guaging others can be even
tougher. Are you still working on the AB Tau BFG files? I noticed an
update for AB's BFG files came out a while back and was thinking of you.
