I've just uploaded my latest photos of the scenery I built in my week
off work and a couple of tau I just painted up.

Thanks for any comments...

Well, your figure painting bears close inspection well. Liked the Tau,
although not sure about the colour scheme on the drone. the gloss varnished
tree-trunk behind looks a bit odd as well! ;>)

Of the terrain, the only thing I would say is that the GW plastic trees only
seem to look good en masse as a thick jungle or singly as an addition with
other terrain. I'd use bigger, more deciduous stuff for woodland, but that's
just me.

Hello Geoff,

Like the Tau pics. I can relate to the "1500 pts. Sigh...)
comment, as I still have a bunch of stuff to paint for my nid army, and
an entire nid army to paint for Toaster too. Weeeeeee!

Hey, nice terrain pics too! As for comments, overall I very much
liked what I saw - nice job on the jungle trees. A couple of thoughts -

1. On your pumping station - all it really needs is a bit more surface
detail (like painted card) that represents control panels, fuse boxes,
etc, and perhaps a ladder on one side to let models get up onto the roof.

2. On your craters - I do mine out of foam (just carve the raised impact
crater lip out of foam with a hot knife)- if I want to put a bottom on
them I simply save the card from the outside of GW model boxes and glue
it to the flat bottom (shiny image side up so I can paint on it without
warping it) and then I paint them as follows to get a deeper illusion of
depth and realism...

Paint interior with textured (fine sand) black, up to and over the top of
the creator rim and feather brush down the outside a bit... Paint lower
outside rim of crater a textured dark brown and feather up to blend with
the black. I then dry brush the interior of the crater with dark gray
working up to light shades of gray at the top edges of the crater rim and
down the outside edge a bit. I then dry brush the outside with lighter
brown, and perhaps a bit of green. Afterwords I simply add small amounts
of flock/static grass and small stones as desired. The black with
lightening shades of gray as the lip rises improves the illusion of depth
in the crator interior, and the dark brown outer edges look like freshly
overturned earth from the shell impact.

Hope that helps...

Some day soon I'll have a web site up and available for viewing some of
my stuff [thanks to Evil Toaster Technologys (tm)].

Later,

> Hello Geoff,

<Ker-snip!>

Doh! Suddenly realized that I forgot to ask - What sort of camera
did you use to take those shots? They look great, even the macro style
shots of the fire warrior close up.

Ever curious...

I have a Kodak DC240i Digital Camera - was pretty expensive, but as
Kodak have come up with lots of better models since, should be down in
price now.

Works pretty good for taking photos of minis - the only problem is that
if minis are varnished - even with the matte stuff, they tend to gleam
nicely if the flash is needed. - And you can guess that I made the
error of taking all my photos one night so the flash was needed... :-(

Another poster in this thread commented on the shiny brown trunks of
trees. Well that's brown ink reflecting the flash - they look nothing
like so shiny in 'real life'.

My craters were made using MDF baseboard and Air clay. The air clay was
very cheap and makes crater edges real well. After I glued the edges and
board together I PVA glue painted them and put them in sand. Once that
had dried I painted over with watered PVA and allowed to dry.
The paint jobs on them were using black and white poster paints mixed in
lighter shades. Again, the photos have taken away the depth look from
them, they do look better in 'real life' - honest! :-)

The forest does look a little sparse, but I wanted to be able to move
figures in it easily -and having painted so many 40K trees, I'd already
decided to go with a deciduous forest next.

The Pump station was a real rush job, hence I didn't have time to
texture the walls - besides I decided that if it was a metallic
building, it wouldn't be textured like a stone one. The next building I
do, will be with textured paint and will probably have ladders and all
the other extras that were missing from the pump station.

My excuse is that I only started this money-pit of a hobby in May and so
I've been learning how to paint figures, build scenery and play all in
the space of about 3 months. By the time I finish painting one unit, I
look back at the earlier ones I've done and realise just how much better
the newer paint jobs look - and then I get real mad and wonder if I
should go back and repaint the first ones again. My wife says don't, so
I can see the learning curve I've had. :-)

Thanks all, for looking...

True. A dense forest looks nice, but there's just no room to move models
through it.

Quite a feat. Have you done any painting before, because your painting
looks quite good for a beginner (no offence at beginner).

Ah true, but listen to your wife, if not for the learning curve than for the
sake of time! :o)

It's impassable terrian..... You think dense woods are hard to move troops
through in 40k try a packed formation in wfb

In that case, the movement tray for my Orc regiment is impassable terrain
too. Can't fit the buggers on it (stupid spears).
