I've got some painted 10mm figs stuck onto sheet metal bases with superglue
Any suggestions for removing the figs from the base without damaging the paintwork

Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first person

I've just removed metal bases off some recently acquired Swiss medievals. I
wore a pair of gloves to protect my fingers and the painted mini, and used
an Exacto knife to gently seperate the mini from the metal base. I took my
time and resulted in no damaged figures. The trick is getting the blade into
place without slicing your fingers or ruining the mini. Once done, the
removeal of the bases is quite easy.

If you can get some Acetone into the area without it touching the paint,
that should do it. However as Jimi points out superglue is generally easy
to snap.

try soaking them in water for a day or so
superglue is water soluble (just not very)

Just work the blade of a craft knife under the edge of the figure base, it
should just crack off the metal base. I've even removed figures which have
been based using two part epoxy (much, much stronger joint than
superglue)with a craft knife, you just have to watch your fingers!

Hi Frank,
10mm figures? Nothing to worry about because they aren't real figures...
ha ha ha... Just kidding with you there.
Well, there are a few things to try, but the first thing would be this:
Since they are glued on with Superglue and the bases are metal, take
two pairs of pliers and grasp each end of the metal base (not the
figures). Carefully twist the metal and you should hear some cracking.
That's the Superglue breaking away. Depending on how much glue there is,
the figures should just pop off. But if you want to keep the bases,
well, then this won't work. But I'm guessing you want to remove the
figures for rebasing.

A soak overnight in warm water then prize them off with a sharp knife does the trick

As a matter of interest (since I've never dared to do that) does it
not harm the painting?
Not in my experience. I've been dismounting figures that way for years.

What an excellent suggestion - the figures, 6 to a base, just fall off
Frank, just glad I was able to help.
Happy gaming,
