About four hours via MegaMek and eight hours with BattleTech Z (a fast
kill variant that I created for my son and his friends to play.)

About 40 hours, total, all in MegaMek, all against the computer or with my
son on a LAN.
I REALLY miss breaking out the minis and firing up the mechs.

I Haven't tried MegaMek, I've been offline for quite awhile. worth the
effort?
I hear ya, that's why I cobbled together a faster playing variant so
that my son and his attention span of a gnat friends (video gamers one
and all) would be able to 'out of the box' run a lance of mechs each
while still maintaining their attention. :-)
It was also a good excuse for me to paint some idle figures and touch
up old mechs with more detail.

If you're curious, you can see part of the reduced mech sheet in this

Yeah, actually; MegaMek works fairly well, at least Human vs. Computer. I
had significant issues with crashing while playing with my son, though. It
can be quite enjoyable to play. I just wish I could more easily manipulate
the "minis" in MegaMek; I can update mechs, add new designs, etc., but I
can't change the base mini used when I do.
It can also be slightly difficult to work with "continuing units", i.e.., a
campaign, as I don't see easy ways to "forward fit" or repair in between
missions. Other than that, two LB-10Xs way up!
My understanding is that MegaMek Clan battles (not Clanner battles, but
organized Clan battles) are where it's at in the Battletech scene right now,
but I can't put the time into joining one right now; I wouldn't be steady
enough in showing up to make myself valuable to any play group.

If you're talking about the screen images, there are a few text files in
the data/images/units folder, notably mechset.txt, that hold the unit/
image associations the program uses and that should be easy to edit. To
get completely new images, you'll probably want a suitable graphics
program to create your own greyscale 84 x 72 pixel GIFs.

About two hours - my star was annihilated within a couple of turns due to
some lucky head shots with ER PPCs. I just got back into BT after a pause
of two years. There's maybe ten active players in the Netherlands, so
playing is limited to conventions four time a year - which should give me
some 20 hours of play this year.
