Lu Rong (1436-1494) described a deck of 38 cards consisting 4 suits. The English translation was published in the Playing-Card Vol. xxix Num 3. I noticed the Cash denominations in the top suit were extremely large. I understand that these large numbers were removed in the process of evolution. I have 2 questions.... more »

Bamboo 筒 is called copper coin. Why?

Has anyone considered the possibility that the symbols in Ma Diao and therefore mahjong were wrong? I mean what if the circular symbol was not money but something else different entirely? After all, it is written in a pictograph with a bamboo radical, 筒. 筒 sounds like tong and it means ‘tube’ or pipe, 管.... more »

What is "Ti" in Shui Huo Ti Pai?

Who knows what “Ti” means? Shui Huo Ti Pai is the name of a card deck on page 36 shown in photo 39 in Illustrated Book of Mahjong Museum (Japan 1999). My question is “what does Shui Huo Ti Pai” mean?
