I am designing a point & click graphical adventure game and would like to
see a good FREE game of similar style ( simple would be an extra bonus )
that can be downloaded free of charge, perhaps something from the archives.
Any recommendations.
Thanks

Jessica Plunkenstein and the Dusseldorf Conspiracy. The graphics are,
ahem, poor. But it's got great voice acting and dialogue and it works
just like a classic graphic adventure is supposed to. Don't remember
the site.

I would suggest checking out one of the big forums for graphical adventures
to get tips from - justadventure.com and adventuregamers.com being the names
that spring to mind, and then there's wherever the AGS people hang out with
all their freeware...

Adventure Gamers have a decent freeware coverage, and Adventure
Developers http://www.adventuredevelopers.com is specialised on
independent adventure game making.

Here's a few specific game recommendations (for links, see the
previously mentioned sites) for games that I like.

Out Of Order
Cubert Badbone
The Game That Takes Place on a Cruise Ship
Apprentice I and II (probably III too, when it's released)
Spooks

(And my own game, of course: Frasse and the Peas of Kejick)

For literally hundreds of the things, check out www.lazylaces.com and
do a search on

point'n'click

(the lack of spaces and two apostrophes are important, I think - at
work so I can't check currently)

They have links to games of myriad genres and a comments section for
each game you can turn to for help and occasionally walkthroughs. It's
quite the little community.

"Beneath a Steel Sky" and "Flight of the Amazon Queen" can be

They used to be commercial games, and while they're still copyrighted
(of course), the copyright holders have granted permission to
distribute them. In the case of Beneath a Steel Sky, you can even
download the original source code for it from
http://www.classicdosgames.com/source.html but I'm told it makes for
pretty scary reading.

Revolution Software has also made Lure of the Temptress available for
download from http://www.revolution.co.uk/_display.php?id=10 but I
haven't played that one beyond the first few rooms.
