Replaying this after many years of remembering it fondly, and found
myself in the following situation. Hopefully someone else will
remember the game well enough to provide the answer. I trolled RGIF,
but couldn't find a post addressing this specific problem.

I'm in the basement of the church. My flashlight has been out for
awhile, having gotten wet many thousands of turns ago without my
noticing. I have tried putting the extinguished lantern in my pocket
and lighting a match (so I can see the step to jump to), but I drop
the book of matches as I jump. Is there a solution, or am I in an
unwinnable position?

It's been ages since I've played this myself, but as I recall, there
was a way to get to the bottom of the shaft where the things fell.
Perhaps through the underground sewers. I hope you get better
responses than mine.

I think you might be stuck, although I've heard that there are many
creative solutions to some of these puzzles. The stairwell in the
church gave me a lot of trouble, but my flashlight had not been
damaged. You will be able to recover the stuff you've dropped, but
first you have to get through the church.
