Okay, I'm embarrassed to admit it, given that this game is always
reviewed as being a prime example of a game where you'll never be stuck
and the plot rolls right along, and given all the in-game help and
hints, but I'm feeling stuck in The King of Shreds and Patches. *sigh*

Now that I've outed myself as a simpleton, here's the situation:

***SPOILER SPACE***

I'm in the laboratory, and on the throne's arms are figures. One of
them has an eye with a gem. If I push the eye, there's a click from the
plinth that the throne is on and the eye pushes in.

If I look at the plinth, there's a rectangle visible now. if I push the
rectangle, it pushes in and the eye pops back out again.

The two basically toggle each other. That seems to be all I can do
with either thing, and I can't find anything else to usefull bring to
bear on the situation. It feels like I should be able to do more, and
the hints imply that the throne is necessary in some way.

Any help would be appreciated

Okay, that was weird. When you said this, I thought, "I'm SURE that I
tried anything that fits this description." And it turns out that I'm
pretty sure that I had. I went back to my save and tried it and it
didn't work. I tried lots of other things. Finally, in frustration, I
left the building and went to work on another puzzle elsewhere. After
some "find the verb" frustration there, I went to the hints, and a new
hint about the throne had appeared. I read it and it told me to do
exactly what you're hinting at and exactly what I'm sure I did before,
but I went back and did it and this time it worked. However, a
*different* hint that I had been pursuing for another problem
disappeared from the hint list. So I went back to my save game from
before *again*, copied and pasted the other hint into a text editor, and
then went through the whole sequence for both successfully.

Later, there's more weird stuff happening, like a spot where I'm asked
for some information then told to continue on to another person and then
that person asks me for some information but when I tell them, the first
person responds and I've looped back, but performing the same actions a
second time works. (???)

I don't know if this is all some weird glitch of Spatterlight or what,
but it's been a bit frustrating. :/ All said, though, I seem to have
gotten past those areas okay, so no long-term harm done or anything.

I guess that means we can all heave a sigh of relief?

Seriously, get a girlfriend.

Don't mind Pudlo. He can't get a girlfriend himself (or a life), so he
comes here and is hostile instead. Thanks for letting us know your
problem is solved. :)
