About a half year ago somebody gave me an old obsolete donated Dell Optiplex
running Microsoft XP Home Edition version 2002, but it had no modem.

A couple weeks ago I finally found a 56k dialup modem for it, the last one in
stock at Best Buy a mile from here.

Last night I tried to download an IGS client:

First I downloaded Ergo and then tried to run it, but this happened.

C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\Programs packages\ergo\ergo-0.91.3\ergo>java Ergo

After about a half hour of frustration, I gave up on Ergo and downloaded JagoClient,
and it worked the first time. I used it to observe a game on IGS, but I couldn't see
anybody else's kibitz, and nobody replied when I tried to kibitz, so I don't know whether
that part of it is working or not. Also I couldn't figure out how to start playing
a game myself using JagoClient. Today I read the documentation that came with it,
found a moderately large number of spelling/grammar mistakes, but no information
how to start a game. Does anybody here know how? Does anybody except me care about the
English mistakes in the documentation?

First of all i don't know if it is possible to play a game if you are
not registered.
If you are registered you had to click the "Players" button and after
you had to right click on a player and choose match in the menu and you
have to set the match parameters.
Other way (automatch for example) you have use the shell commands in the
terminal window of igs server.
Type "? commands" and read the helps about commands.

I've been registered on IGS as 'REM' for several years. But I've
played only a very few games without any IGS client, because I need
extra time to manually key in the row-column coordinates and
double-check I type them correctly on this very old flakey
keyboard, so I need 15 minutes per player byo-yomi, and most IGS
players aren't willing to play that slow a game. But if you watch
the big online matches (Honinbo, Meijin, Gosei, Oza), you would see
me a **major** contributor to the kibitzing.

Is that what you mean, or do I also need to somehow register my
JagoClient in some database before I can use it to play on IGS?

When playing manually using VT100 TELNET with verbose mode turned
on to see the board after each move, or even earlier when I had
direct dialup to Unix shell and thus could run GoServant, I had
trouble setting the handicap, and thus had to abort games before
the first move had been played, after already having spent 20
minutes just trying to find somebody to play with me, which was
much too frustrating.

Continuing from above: So the only way I was able to set game
parameters correctly was to use automatch. So even if somebody
invited me to a game, instead of copy-and-paste of the text in the
match-request (which usually set parameters wrong), I'd do
automatch back at that person, and then he'd have to copy-and-paste
the match-request text, which would thus get the parameters
correct. But my problem/question is: After I *manually* start a
game using terminal window (my 'automatch <user>' and opponent's
copy-and-paste), how do I tell JagoClient to open a game window
that is connected to that particular game? I see nothing in
JagoClient documentation how to do that. Or does JagoClient
automatically start a board window whenever it sees from IGS output
that I've started playing a game, so I don't have to do anything
more? I'm afraid to automatch somebody, and thus start a game, and
then get stuck for the next fifteen minutes desperately trying to
open a board window for that game, and finally forfeit because my
clock ran out. (The forfeited game doesn't count if the forfeit is
before two moves have been played, but still I'd rather not annoy
the other player in that way.)

I assume that's for IGS terminal commands, which I already know about.
