I spend more time on Kaya GS now than KGS.

Maybe that's because it's new. Maybe it's because 99% of the people
there have spent money to be there and that just "makes it better".

I feel.. that old sense of community... that KGS has lost

Yes, kaya.gs has a "poor" UI, so to speak, because it's new. But they
have already done a dozen things RIGHT that KGS should have done 5 years
ago:

1. tweaki. <--- applause. (note to self: finally someone in charge who
knows what the community wants, even if they never read it ;-)

2. malkovitch command for commenting moves during games. <--- We asked.
You saw the need. We asked again. You didn't comment. We asked again.
Years passed. We asked. You did nothing. And now, Kaya.gs. Thank you.

3. Ability to publish hover-over variations in the chat window. <--- god
mode.

4. Gravatars. <--- Which means you can have bigger avatars. And multiple
avatars. Nice move, well played.

5. Money <--- Being serious about money instead of pretending they dont
want more subscribers, in short, "request for patrons", is a smart thing
that KGS did (or was approached and got without asking, can't remember)
that has seen them well -- and IGS as well, from the Japanese populace
who pays to use it. Very smart. No such server would succeed without
financial backing and while slow to start I am sure they will get more
as time goes by. I'm sure the admins are smart in this area.

This is all me trying to justify why I spend more time there. Oh yeah
another one, they never cut off my connection when I go eat dinner so I
don't miss chat messages.

Because you know what... it IS a chat server. Really.

And a thousand other reasons.

Seems like they are more interested in cash than in go.

BTW, there is a solution for that. There is an enhanced version of the KGS client
available via the website of the Beijing Go club that has some additional cool features, like auto-observe and staying logged-in indefinitely.
