I looked at the record of the game against James Kerwin, and was struck
by the oddity of the way black played. Is this the way the commercial
version of the program plays? I'm thinking of buying it, to practice my
openings, but if it plays seemingly random moves, there's not much
point...

I think you just asked this on godiscussions.com recently, no? Err,
off all the commercial go softwares available at the moment, imho,
MFoG is the best in terms of fuseki. And as it's just a program you
cannot expect it to reply decent moves to those moves which are not
programmed. Whatsoever I still recommend MFoG as the best choice for
studying fuseki.
