I am proud to introduce to you the newest member in the fearless leader
community. It would be godiscussion.com. They have followed all my lessons
here :
1. They have provided a free service to the many many go players
2. They have become popular
3. They have the praise and admiration of many many users
This is all good!
What should godiscussions.com do with this favorable
position?
4. They should ban people from their service that is what!
I must admit , that godiscussions.com has taken banning to a new level. If
they don't like you, even if you have never posted a single thing to their
website, you get banned - period! You cannot even read the posts from other
users. Ban them.
I feel so proud to have given all these instructions for so long and see
godiscussions take banning to a whole new level.
This is very good!
Congratulations - you have become arbitrary and petty and have used your
power to send out messages and punishments to users that you do notlike,
even those that have never posted to your site. Decide you don't like them
and then ban them from not just posting to your site, but from even reading
your site.
May I be the first to commend godiscussions.com for using their status as a
leader in the go community as an opportunity to punish people!
Thank you, I am alway amazed at the ingenuity of go players and go
organizations when it comes to petty bannings and power projection!
Your friend,
Big Duck

Speaking as someone who's banned from just about every major Western Go
website, I still think that there is "good banning" and "bad banning".
Bad banning is banning that damages the Go community by denying them
information, or banning due to commercial motives (allegiances with
competing products), or banning due to ego-reasons (petty antipathy) .
Good banning is banning that prevents (law-violating) attacks on others, of
the like we have seen here and on Sensei's Library, where people were
falsely accused of running a piracy operation, or assassination squads and
the like.
Good banning is banning those that spread pirated software and I can think
of several other reasons why someone would be banned for wholly sensible and
defensible reasons.
So - the question is - WHY did the banning take place?
(I'm not interested in who got banned - no idea - perhaps it me :-)

There is also "ugly banning" for bans that are neither "good" nor "bad."

Humorous but nothing dramatic. Not aleast by Seung-Hui Cho's standard.
Usenet is dying because lots of newgroups have become havens for folks
who, for their own reasons, won't make any attempt at civility or
rational discourse. Some say that the unfettered "discussion" here is a
good thing (and it can be that, at times), but for those of us who have
a day job, it's all about signal-to-noise. If you only have 15 minutes

Indeed. Balkanising discussions by having them take place on a single
server that goes away as soon as a single organisation decides they're
not interested in supporting it, *and* having them take place behind a
wall that I can only get inside via a crappy web front end instead of
a client that behaves the way I choose -- well, Usenet has been around
a long time and seen countless thousands of such services rise and
fall.
I'll trust decentralised and standards-based over the inverse.

The point of the post is that godiscussions is another site run by a man who
uses his [small] power to ban people that are part of the go community.
In my case, I cannot even read the forum, [for goodness sake]! Its not like
my posting priveledges were taken away, I mean I cannot even read the forum.
I have never even made a post to the forum. I did try to register and was
blocked from registering - but to be so petty as to not even allow someone
to read the forum - I mean, get real
However, like all fearless leaders he has provided a free service which
people like, and he has put all his tireless efforts into creating the
forum to good use- to banning people. To ban a member of the go community,
not some troll that comes along and knows absolutely nothing about go, but a
member that has played for over 25 years. Godiscussions gets to pick the
naughty players and bans them from reading the forum. It is pretty funny.
I must assume that I am banned for my Big Duck posting, which in essence are
parodies on bannings.
I get banned from IGS for making parodies about IGS banning policies.
I get banned from godiscussions.com, for making parodies about banning
policies too?
Please do not construe this as whining. I am actually quite amused at the
petty spirit of some in the go community. It seems that people that build a
nice site or go server just cannot help themselves when it comes to banning
folks- it must be a real power-ego thing.
Of course godiscussions has a right to ban me. But why would the site want
to ban a person that has never made a single post to his website - and make
the ban so severe that reading the website is banned?
I do not know. I guess I will go hang out on KGS, where folks are not
banned for expressing their opinions on rgg (or even for severely
criticizing KGS on rgg). IGS and godiscussions shoud take some lessons from
KGS-
Who knows, perhaps godiscussions.com , or IGS can purchase KGS and have a
grand purging ceremony and get me off of all internet go activities.
Don, you run a nice site - and you have every right to ban anyone you want,
however, that right does not mean it is the right thing to do.
Never mind, you have your dozens of admiring fans, so what does banning one
loser that you don't like mean anyways?

Possible, but not feasible.
Assuming you are Big Duck, you've exhibited enough of a paranoid
attitude over the years that you'll have to go some to get me to believe
that you can't *read* the site. There's almost no site owner in the
world who is petty enough, and who has enough time on their hands, to do
that. Mostly, for these one-man sites, it's hard enough trying to keep
up with bugs and spam. It's a hobby, not a living. So, why exactly would
the man go to a lot of extra effort just to prevent you, and you only,
from *reading* his site?? Posting, I might understand, but reading?
Sorry, it beggars belief.
> However, like all fearless leaders he has provided a free service which

"all his tireless efforts into banning people"?
Rather hyperbolic, isn't it?
All his tireless efforts into building a great Go forum, you mean. For free.
No - it costs him money, actually.
And seen the thousands of participants - none of them getting abused by the
likes of you and your buddies - he is doing a swell job.
One in seven people are psychopaths, and some psychopaths simply can't
restrain themselves. Without policing, a society or community breaks down
into violence, due to psychopaths and sociopaths and those too lazy and
cowardly to step up to the plate.

I object to the fact that you call me a troll that "knows nothing about Go".
I wrote popular Go freeware and my comp. Go research was used by Microsoft.
I studied Go for over 5 years.
Where were you protesting when I got banned on Sensei's Library?
If I am such a troll, why did you buy my software?
You say it's OK to ban trolls - your lack of protest to my banning implies
you deem me one - you are lying, again. I am not a troll but a hard-working
member of the Go community, providing, apart from a commercial service, a
popular, useful and free service:
> Godiscussions gets to pick the naughty players and bans them from reading

The Internet is maturing. Psychopaths are identified at an earlier stage,
and communities are being protected effectively, without damaging the
patient or the community. Live with it.

It is called called fearless leadership, that is why. By develpoing this
site that everyone can use for free he can hand out petty little punishments
to the people he does not like.

Yes it does. I did not believe it either until I found out that the go
community is full of them. And I seem to get people mad by pointing this
out.

That is total nonsense. There will be people that read this that will think
it is not a good idea to ban someone from *reading* godiscussions.com . I
do not expect anyone to rush to my aid on this forum and defend me.

I can easily live with not being able to read (on my home computer)
godiscussions.com. I can also live with not playing on any particular go
server. These things are not so hard to live without. As strange as it
seems, I think it is important for people in the go community to think about
bannings within the community, and for people to think about how much they
are willing to supress their thoughts in order to participate on various
internet sites within this community.
> Frank, I was not even thinking of you when I wrote this. Are you banned

Still trouble with comprehensive reading?
I said why was it OK by you that I was banned on SL (you did not protest
about it on SL), but when YOU are banned on a Go site, you scream bloody
murder?
Hypocrite!
> Why do you think I am calling you a troll?
By saying it's OK to ban trolls, and by not protesting me being banned on
SL, you call me a troll.
> I agree that you are not a troll, and that you have worked hard in the go

Hypocrite. When you are banned, it's the end of the world, but when I am
banned, you are nowhere to be found, but you *do* point out that "banning
trolls is OK". Well buddy, you are the biggest troll, with your anonymous
postings, attacking IGS and KGS, myself and who else. No problem - free
world - but when you whine about the dishonesty of banning now, you're a bit
too late - you should have protested when other folks were banned too. Now I
doubt you'll get much support from those neglected banned.

You're right. The fact that I have been banned has made me stronger, and the
Go community weaker.
First of all, the Go "community" has proven not to exist. No community
spirit.
Secondly, I have found more profitable endeavors than my Go software.
That's what happens when you insult your most ardous contributors.
The extreme hostility and arrogance of the Go "community" has lead to me now
running a profitable IT service business here in Oslo, instead of building
the best freeware Go software (I was already moving towards Mac & Linux -
you can just forget about that now - thanks to Arno Hollosi of Sensei's
Library)
Did you contact the administrator, or immediately come whining here?
It's possible there was somebody spamming the site or taking too much
bandwidth from a dynamic IP address near yours and you got banned as
collateral damage. Or maybe he doesn't like you and banned you from
reading the site, though that seems kind of weird.
-Jeff
If you have any interest, I would say to contact the admin.
Otherwise, if you have had no dealings with the site, how did they even
*get* your IP address to ban it? Again, there's not enough time in the
day to go pre-emptively banning folks. I agree with Jeff... it might be
collateral damage. Or, did you really post there, and you aren't coming
clean with us? ;-)
