This is _PURE_ CRAP.
In this circumstance, we are proposing a split into stories, resources,
and discussion. These CANNOT be sorted by kill files because of the nature
of them. What you are saying is that kill files can be a solution to every
problem AND THEY CAN'T! The stories posted don't necessarily have anything
stating to a dumb file such as the kill file that they are a story, so how
can you be sure to kill them all? The same with the resources, perhaps even
MORE so. The purpose of these is to decrease the missing articles due to this
group turning over too fast (my system turns news over such that it lasts for
two days, but has provision to archive groups for extended periods of time,
i'm sure others are similar), add more structure to the USENET so those
people who are not interested in the discussions (pray, tell me how they
edit out resources & stories from the discussions using a kill file?), or
want to be able to read the discussions, and make sure they can save the
resources and stories for later perusal to do so. Not everyone has a hoopy
froody newsreader, not everyone has megs of free disk space, and adding
structure to chaos is, I think, a jolly worthwhile ideal.
The argument that there will be crossposting is ALSO a pure wad of rabbit
droppings, the ESSENCE of the groups is such that there WON'T be any
crossposting, people who want to post rules supplements post them to
resources, people who want to post stories, post them to stories, and
everything else goes to discussion. Its as simple as that.
The only argument I can't refute is the one of drawing attention to
this newsgroup so the administrators will boot it, we wouldn't want to
loose valuable netters in this manner.

You are stating what would happen in the best of all possible USENETs. The
reality is a bit less optimistic than that.
There may not be crossposting, but there is the simple problem of thread
drift. That is, over a series of followup postings to a post, the original
topic has an unfortunate tendancy to get lost, while some new discussion,
hidden under the old topic subject and on the same bboard will go one. You
may be able to keep people from crossposting, but can you guarentee that
someone won't do a followup post about something that happened in a story,
which then turns into a general discussion, with possible source data stuck
in as well?
Sure, *you* may not do it. But the question is whether or not you'll be able
to guarentee that everyone else isn't going to act like this. And you can't.
From my humble experience in watching threads mutate off the original subject,
its going to happen.

Um, Sorry, but "This is _PURE_ CRAP"
All it require is a little discipline, the same discipline as is required
in deciding whether to cross post or not.
When someone writes a story, they just put "STORY:..." in the subject
or key words line, the same for references. Then, Kill files will automatically
catch it. It's the same philosophy as puting the game name in the key words
line, so that kill files can catch unwanted games.
Now, you may pout and scream that people don't allways do that, but people
are just as likely to do that as they are not to cross post their posts.
I could not believe your post! Such vehemence in posting "_PURE_ CRAP"

So, where does one find information on using and creating KILL files. I
think if the information was posted or given general directions as to where
to find the info it would help. And don't say RTFM because I have... at
least the online one. It doesn't help.
