In my latest scenario, a rogue Infinity agent with secret ambitions to quit
the Patrol and become the next Houdini, has done just that by sneaking into
Harry's workshop during a mission to a parallel 1912 London and
photographing the magician's props and notes. He then went back to Homeline
to try to establish himself as an illusionist. Does he need the Gadgeteering
skill to actually build these devices? After all, he didn't invent them,
Houdini did.

Did he just get to photograph the outside? Or did he get to disassemble
the devices and photograph/measure all the internal bits?

He photographed the plans and notes too.

Page 56/57 of the 4E Basic Set shows the Gadgeteer skill.

That's an Advantage. And a cinematic one. The real Houdini didn't
have them.

Really? I thought he designed and built his own illusions. That's why most
of his secrets died with him, because nobody else knew how they worked.
The milk can escape is one of the illusions that is understood. Houdini's
brother continued to perform it after Harry's death, and the original
apparatus is currently housed at the American museum of magic.

He did. Gadgeteering is not required to design and build mechanical
devices of your own technology level.

Engineering is. Even if my rogue agent doesn't need engineering, Houdini
does.
