"Heresy". And, well, that shouldn't have been a surprise, seeing how
Steffan O'Sullivan was burned at the stake after he published SHERPA.

Oh, is it that time again? The very first post I read in r.g.f.s-h in
2001 was an "I'm going away" post from his handle of the time. Nice to

Its one of the steps to crisis... he's probably just attempting to raise the
stakes (though I can't figure out what they may be.. apart from perhaps our
sanity) by threatening to cut off communication, strangely he seems to be
the one offering to keep the communication lines OPEN! rofl... weird world

Dear Mr Hybrid,

You don't understand.

It's not your role-playing game. It's not your spelling. It's not your use
of grammar. We can tolerate all of these things. Some of us have fringe
interests too.

But we can't tolerate you.

It is plain to anyone who reads one of your posts that you are a radically
self-centred person, possessing not the slightest shred of empathy or
respect for any of us in this newsgroup. You're not in the least bit sorry
for what you've done. The tone of your 'apology' was whiny and
self-serving, with no actual contrition. In reality, you believe you are
the one who has been wronged.

No-one who has perused this newsgroup for any length of time believes for a
second that you actually are leaving for good. We know you'll be back in a
matter of weeks as if nothing had ever happened. Your monumental arrogance
wouldn't have it any other way.

Instead of pouting over the 'threats' and 'abuse' you claim to have
received, did it ever occur to you to wonder whether you might actually be
dramatically out-of-step with the participants in this newsgroup? Of course
you didn't. In fact, you're not even really reading this are you? You're
skimming over it while mentally preparing a retort.

You're not exercising your sacred and inalienable right to free speech.
You're beating us over the head with unsolicited, unusable, cryptic,
incomplete and disorganised data.

I wish you all the best in finding an on-line community that will put up
with you. It doesn't seem as if this one will and, from where I'm sitting,
it looks like that's your fault. We tried reasoning with you. We tried
ignoring you. We tried to cope with humor and irony. In short, we tried to
fit you in. But you're just too irritating.

Please fuck off and die.

Kind regards,

Ritchie

It is theoretically impossible for a mind to have a perfect
visualisation of the universe as in order to visualise it the mind
must be at least one step more complex than the universe and can
therefore ipso facto be no part of the aformentioned universe. Your

Ya know, if you're going to get hurt over what amounts to a
fairly light joke that really isn't anything close to a personal
insult you really shouldn't be posting _anywhere_ on
Usenet. Little digs, jokes, and occasionally much more
severe stuff are part of the package. Surely you've been

Give me a break. Tell me *one* thing that the "Dungeon Master" in the
cartoon "Dungeons & Dragons" *ever* did besides walking behind a rock and
vanishing.

Actually, he's got a point here. It's not spamming; spamming specifically
refers to massive multiple posting/cross-posting, as in Cantor and Siegel.

It *may* be flooding, but calling it spam confuses the issue, and, I
think, makes life harder for folks like Afterburner and the nanau folks,
who actually fight spam. Let's reserve the term "spam" for the stuff that
nanau has a mandate to fight.

> mutants like, Batman, 2 meters tall & weighed
> 368.75 lbs with martial arts skills & talents, I'd

I would.

If you had *detective abilities*, martial arts, and talents, okay, maybe
not then. But, c'mon, no matter how tough you were, you couldn't harm me
if you didn't know where I was.

Look. Anybody can kill anybody. That's the nature of technology. You
could buy a gun, find me, and kill me. You wouldn't have to be a mutant
or have super martial arts skills. That's within the capabilities of
anybody on any of these newsgroups.

But it doesn't happen. Not because people don't have the ability to kill
one another, but because people don't actually have the *desire* to kill
one another. At least not a strong enough desire to put the work into
finding each other and making an attempt, one which may well injure or
kill the attempter.

If you *were* a 368.75 pound mutant with martial arts abilities, you still
wouldn't know who I was, where I was, or how to find me. And if I
suspected that a 368.75 pound mutant with martial arts abilities *did*
want to kill me, well, hell, I might finaly go ahead and buy that home
defense shotgun I've been thinking about.

But that's no different than what I'd do if I thought that you, yourself,
as you are today, wanted to kill me and could find me.

So, if that makes you feel better, as far as I'm concerned, you are, right
now, exactly as powerful as you would be if you *were* a 368.75 pound
mutant with martial arts abilities.

Hell, for all I know, you *are* 368.75 pounds and have martial arts
abilities. I know that my friend Rich is 260 pounds and has martial arts
abilities -- he's a martial arts instructor in a martial art that focuses
primarily on streetfighting, and secondarily on full-contact bare-knuckles
kickboxing matches. Me, I'm 215 pounds, but most of that's fat these
days, and, while I *did* study that martial art once, I'm so out of
conditioning that I doubt I could do a hard forearm block of a baseball
bat any more. At least, not more than once or twice.

And, while I *am* a mutant, I mainly got empathy based advantages and a
couple mental tricks, not combat-effective ones. I can, however, digest
things that normal humans can't.

What's with the automated reply? Did you set your news viewer to reply
a lot more psychotic nonsense after the 4th or so reply to the
original post without even caring what they are about? Is this just a
template like the Alanis Morrisette Lyrics Generator or something?

Really, you need to stop posting nonsense. I really don't see what do
you gain by repeating yourself over and over and over (if it's a
person I'm talking to... I'm thinking it might be just a faulty
program. Maybe somebody plugged MegaHAL or Elisa into a news reader?)

Dear Mr. Hybrid,

You are not listening. RKMudge gave you a very good explanation of
_why_ you are annoying.

You did not listen. You chose instead to concentrate on his humorous
sign off.

To re-iterate:

You post garbage. That's not objectionable, but it 1) isn't funny, 2)
isn't relevant, 3) isn't coherent.
This is usenet, most people (as you have) get away free while posting
spelling errors and mangled grammar. No one has called you on that.

Many people post detailed rules for obscure or major parts of Gurps here
that I (and I assume others) think make no sense to the game. No one
bothers them, because _someone_ usually thinks they are interesting
enough to comment, question, and come up with alternatives. They often
are starting points for conversations that lead, in usenet fashion, to
strange places and unusual ideas. Some of which are useful in the games
people play.

You do not do that. You post equations. Your equations do not relate
to anything. Your equations are not explained. Your equations are for
a game whose rules are not known to _anyone_ on this board. No one is
interested in that.

If people ask you what you are doing, you do not answer. Instead you
post corrections to equations that no one except you cares if they are
correct. Who cares when the original post was incomprehensible, anyway?

If you read the posts on the gurps newsgroup you will see that a lot of
people have read a lot of rpg rules. I keep running into names I've
never _heard_ of, let alone read. These people are quite knowledgeable
about the rpg possibilities, and are not adverse to learning more.

You do not take advantage of it. You do not post in order to start a
conversation. You do not post in order to inform, or raise questions,
or ask questions, or (especially) answer questions. You guard your rpg
like an alligator - it's hidden under a pile of dead leaves somewhere,
but you won't put it on a web page and ask for comments.
If you were truly as interested in it as you claim, you would try to
engage people. But you don't, so we are left wondering at your real
motivations.

> My intent was simply come up a 1 paragraph rpg,

This is untrue. We know it is untrue because if it was you would have
posted the paragraph. Note - an equation (even one that goes for 10
lines) is not a paragraph. A paragraph has a point. It has support,
and description, and usually multiple sentences. If this were really
your goal you would have gone about your activities differently.

--Tom A.

The Scott Kallin one paragraph, chart less, role playing game (developed
c. 1980):
Roll two dice three times. Low numbers are bad, numbers around 7 are
mediocre, high numbers are good. Use lots of adjectives to distinguish
numeric results from each other. The first roll represents your
childhood - how good was it, anyway? Interesting? Successful? The GM
should embellish this as much as he wants. The second roll respresents
your adult life. The third represents your death. A good GM can make
this as interesting, or pathetic, as they want - based on the players
roll. Can be played by any number of people - playing time averages 1
minute per person per game. Enjoy. Scott, are you on line?

Hmmm perhaps we should create a message board populated

Actually, Terry DID run into him - C++ made a brief appearance on r.g.f.misc
a couple of months ago. Actually, it was rather disappointing - Mr. Austin
did nothing but fling gratuitous obcenities for a couple of posts. C++ never
came back though, so I suppose it was worth it.

If "P" is the number of "last ever" posts sent by Marcus
(a.k.a etc.), then "P^n" is the number of posts that he will
send *after* supposedly leaving the newsgroup (where n is
proportionate to how lud the little voices are talking to
him).

"Log P" is the number of people who actually care.

Yes, but it would be a tricky job, first you would
have to remove any traces of artificial intelligence from the bots
(forcing anything remotely intelligent to read thoes posts is
just too cruel). Then have some bots quote a line from the
post at random and reply:-

Yes but how does this compare with <insert hero name>?

Isn't this a typo here?

Wouldn't <Random equation> scale better?

Excellent Post! My friends and I are really looking forward to
the publication of Hybrid. But I don't quite
understand <quote Hybrid equation> could you expand on this?

Sometimes the bots could post leading questions;-

Please could you render <list of supers> into Hybrid?

I'd like to play <game system> under Hybrid, could you
advise how best I can do this?

Can you use Refectory Campaign Design with Hybrid?

Will Hybrid work with <obscure novel>? Its my fave book and
I'd love to play it under your monumental system.

Please could you stop changing your email address? It makes
it very hard to track and archive your posts.

To make things more convincing some traffic could be
copied from r.g.f.super-heroes (through a one way valve to ensure no
back flow:-)

Thanks! I'm happy to be back. I would have been back long ago, but my cheap
old ISP decided to drop the USENET service, and I wasn't going to go to all
the trouble of changing ISP's until I could get DSL (my address has changed
four or five times in the past few years--it's getting tiresome).

Huh. Wish I'd know about that six months ago. Oh, well, it's a moot point

When My cheap if pricey ISP dropped it's admittedly to inferior to
be used USENET software, they suggested Free Agent through their
connection and gave an address.

I found Agent tended to 'wake up' the 'close connection in inactive
for more than 15 minutes feature' even after I set the thing up not to
do so, which definitely fit the "Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was
the play" criteria. Fortunately Google got it's act together re:

There's also the fact that you can read newsgroups by going
straight to Google's site now. Of course, it doesn't help
to post that _here_, and if your cheap ISP dropped Web
service, too, well, that's _too_ damn cheap for me! :-)

I hated Free Agent. It was lousy. I used to use the no longer available
WinVN News reader--it didn't have as many bells and whistles, but it was
nice. When I switched back to being a Mac user, I despared of finding a
decent news reader until I found Hogwasher--which is wonderful. I dislike
using my web browser to read USENET--it always seemed clunky to me (YMMV).

Before I got my DSL account, I had lousy bandwidth with my 56K modem. I was
lucky to get 24K speeds in reality, and Google (which is my favorite search
engine) often bogged down. DSL may be hideously expensive by comparison, but
well worth it--altho I wished I'd realized I could use Google to read my news
earlier--<sigh> But hey, there are ISP's out there where you can buy just an
email account--tho I can't imagine the Net without the Web these days.
