Prefer to play the opposite sex, and usually do. I'm in two all-female
groups so if nobody plays males it becomes something of a hen night rather
than an adventure. Depends on your definition of adventure, methinks. ^_^;;

I prefer to play male characters because they're easier for me to
role-play, though I often play females when needed or when playing
computer games, especially the ones where the female characters are
well drawn... ;)

almost exclusively, I've "played" maybe ten games in the last twenty
years, and none of them lasted more than a few sessions for me.

I happen to be straight, but if you're looking I do know a few friends
who are gay and even one who's been looking to hook up with a nice
gamer for awhile now...

Depends on the group. Typically our RGP groups are evenly split between
male and female players so everyone will usually just play the same sex
characters. Occasionally when the group's male/female ratio is unbalanced
some players will play opposite sex characters to balance the party but this
usually isn't necessary.

Hrm. Off the top of my head, I can recall seventeen women gamers I've
played with* in the last few years. Two lesbian, four presumed straight,
three theoretically bi, eight confirmed bi. So I have trouble
understanding the common "OMG, a bi gamer chick!" reaction - to me,
that's the rule rather than the exception.

Generally male. Occasionally female.

Depends on group. I'm always *a* DM in the group, but if others want to
run a game we swap off.

Incidentally, I think you're going to find almost everyone who responds
DMs at least part of the time. I suspect that *most* people who post here
are DMs; IIRC there is a disproportionately high ratio of DMs:players.

Straight.

Normally I don't care at all about a person's sexual orientation, unless
it does, or could, apply directly to my own kinks. I figure that all
orientations are cool; there's no need for an 'excuse' or 'reason' to be
gay, for example.

So, out of curiousity, what *'excuse'* could there be for being straight?

PS I work as a proffesional singer... about 50% plus of the guys I work with
are Gay...
Much harder to tell with the females...
How is that relevant.. dunno... I guess it's just interesting considering
the low ratio of gay guys in this particular sphere of interest...?

By number of PCs: 2/3 same sex (male), 1/3 opposite sex (female)
By "screen time": roughly equal.
On MUDs: roughly equal.
In CRPGs: almost always opposite sex (female)

Okay, Rupert & Brad, et al, I hate to say it, but maybe you guys

Same for preference. Though when DMing obviously there is a range.

Yes, I was the sole DM in our group for about 8 years, the main one for 3
others and for the least 2 one of 3 in the group.

Aww, shucks, thanks. :-) But aren't there a fair few of us here? I've
never really felt swamped by males...

Suppose I'd better answer the questions.

I almost always play characters of my own sex, I DM regularly when I
*do* DM though my game is currently on indefinite hold, I'm female, and
I'm straight for all practical purposes.

Me too. :D

That said, so far, about half the women I've had in RPGs, offline and
online, have been bi... Including my current SO. So this isn't a big
deal to me, either. It's just one of those wonderful reasons for
playing. *happy little grin*

To answer the original poster's questions:

> Do you prefer to play same or opposite sex characters (or
> in-between or other)?

Tabletop, about 70-30 same-opposite. CRPG, almost always opposite.
Usually, the females in CRPGs are just cooler, better looking, and
sometimes better written. Then again, Minsc does rule. :D

> Do you DM regularly?

Usually, 100%. In my current game, 50-50. I trade off adventures with
another GM, with our campaigns progressing in parallel in different
setting.

> Are you male or female (or in-between, or other)?

Male

> Gay or strait (or in-between, or other)?

Very effeminate bi with heavy lean towards women. (And interestingly
enough, so is my SO... except she's female... Gotta love coincidence
of interests.)

Mostly-confirmed gay. My PCs have usually been straight.

Me too! Hehe, I thought being bi was fairly average for female gamers... my
groups has five bisexual females, one lesbian, two straight females and
occasionally one gay bloke, who has more or less been declared an honourary
woman for the sake of being able to claim it is an all-girl gaming group,
honest. The only problem is the incredible tendency towards people wanting
to play extremely bishounen-like male elves who are more than a little
ambiguous sexuality-wise - can you feel the angstiness?
I'm the DM, and I am just about figuring out that if I want an NPC to be
taken seriously, I'd better not make them an elf, because the entire party's
attitude to elves is that they are more or less sex toys. Even the elves in
the party are of this opinion. Androgynous male members of the elven
nobility are 308.2% more at risk of sexual assault by the PCs than any other
form of NPC elf, and should consequently never attempt to hire the party to
do anything. Ever. Poor little things.

I see, well, if you're sure he enjoys the over-analyzing, then, by all
means, do continue. Personally I have to agree with Anonymous Jack's
comment in the I hate the game I play in thread: "I have to say at

Well I do it opposite in CRPGs mainly for the looks, but I definatley
have to agree, the games where the females are different stat wise, they
tend to be a lot better. I love playing the sorceress in Balders Gate:
Shadows of Amn (PS2 game). The other characters just suck in
comparison.

Or maybe it could be that I like to play magic types, and they usually
make the magic types female.

That's mostly cultural bias talking - there are/have been plenty of
societies that have/had a perfectly serviceable standard for male beauty.
The notion that there's no such thing is a passing phase, a lingering
aftereffect of the homophobic (and more generally anti-sexual) hysteria that
swept Western society not too long ago (in historical terms, anyway) - and
I, for one, am glad to see it on its way out. ;)

You, I was curious if the effect of one's preferences affected the
likelyhood of playing the opposite sex. Just on off hand guestimate it
doesn't look like it does - except almost all the male hetros prefer to
play females in CRGPs so far. :)

Aw defending the troll. Isn't that cute. Commie Rat Bastard! Trolls
deserve to die a lonely death in a sensory deprivation box! They are
only a step above the chum of Lawyers, Politicians and Spammers! O.k.
maybe it's not fair to lump the Lawyers and Politicians in with the
Spammers. So Trolls are 2 steps above Spammers.

Who cares what the troll thinks about over analyzing.

And you also mistake "like" for tolerate. At least Ron doesn't take his
own trolls to seriously.

I DM most of the time because I enjoy it more and because I'm better at
DMing than playing a PC. Occasionally, I miss playing, and I get burned
out as a DM, and I ask somebody else to run the game. Doesn't take long
before I tire of it. Although I must admit that I'm having great fun in

Geez, Justisaur, for someone who usually has such interesting
opinions to post, this is bordering on being out of character. I'm not
defending anyone, not even the troll. In point of fact, I was, rather,
proffering that the mad dash at each post to point out the
discrepancies thus proving it's a troll post rather than taking some
of these in stride for the humor they are worth gets old, but if
everyone is doing it in mutual fun, I'll take the analytical
viewpoints as further humor.
As far as comparing trolls to lawyers/politicians, let alone
spammers, I have to disagree, some troll posts are just plain
distasteful and, therefore, do classify as being on par with the
spammers, but some are just funny or cute or stupid and basically I
see them as a little levity. But that's my view, you're certainly
welcome to your own.
Who cares what the troll thinks? How rude! ;)
Where in the above did you see the word "Like"? The only time I
saw that word used above was in Brad's comparing of Ron to Terry,
which, frankly, if Brad's right about that, Ron's rolling on the floor
by now watching the post count he attributes himself rise from this...

Oh, indeed. As little as fifty years ago, the male figure was considered to
be so indescribably hideous that American art galleries would refuse to host
exhibitions featuring male nudes; respected members of artistic and
intellectual communities in America would often state that art showcasing
the male body was not, in fact, "art" - that the male figure was
intrinsically devoid of any aesthetic merit whatsoever. This opinion has
fallen out of favour quite considerably over the suceeding decades, and
recently this trend has begun to make the transition into the opinions of
everyday people (though it obviously still has a long way to go in many
places ;) ).

Lately it's been getting tougher to get a spot as DM in my group, as Rap
Master Bard (who feels compelled to hide his REAL name because he is
afraid of his reputation!) is running one and will be starting a new one
soon, and Chris is a skilled first-time DM who is running a fun game that
I've even learned some tricks from.

Ah I see. Not defending the troll, just you getting tired of endless
shouts of "wolf!" er I mean "Ron!".

Generally humor has more than a smidgen of truth, at least from the
humorist's view. They just seem to think they can get away with it if
they disguise it as humor.

I've come to the conclusion you have to train a player for a long time,
until their DM style is the same (or close) as yours for a DM to really
enjoy a game.

I rather enjoyed a round robbin we had going for a bit, it unfortunately
ended due to circumstances not having anything to do with the game
itself.

Maybe he saw Star Trek: the movie at a formative age, and fixated on the

I suppose that depends on the type of humor, doesn't it? But you are
also right in that some folks try to disguise things as humor which
are just things which need disguising...
