The art gallery for the Eberron Campaign Setting has gone up:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/eb/20040618a

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/eb_gallery/82078.jpg
An example of the interesting comic book-inspired visuals in the book - I don't
mean in the sense of four-colour superheroes, but in the sense of using panels
and insets to convey a sense of ongoing action and to emphasise different
elements of the image.

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/eb_gallery/82149.jpg
Creepy.

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/eb_gallery/82152.jpg
Straight out of "Evil Dead"?

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/eb_gallery/82155.jpg
Why must this picture contain a dead baby with a hammer?

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/eb_gallery/82169.jpg
Gah!

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/eb_gallery/82102.jpg
Slightly intimidating, yes.

Spelljammery goodness.

Not bad, but it could use more comic book inspired visuals in the sense
of more cheesecake!

The really intimidating part is that this being Eberron, that golem-looking
bastard is probably smarter than you are and has issues with fleshies, too.

Smarter? Why? Do warforged get bonuses to Int or something? Where can
one find information on them as a player race (short of waiting for
Eberron to come out)?

Nah, but all that built-in gear suggests a large number of
warforged-exclusive feats, which in turn suggests a high-level character.
In my experience, high-level characters can be as bright as they want to be,
and many warforged have a thing about proving themselves superior to
fleshy-types - so you can bet that Rusty there has probably jacked his
brainpower up to inhuman levels along with everything else. ;)

Yeah, they appeared more-or-less fully statted in Dragon a couple of issues
back.

Could you tell me the issue number? We don't really get Dragon regularly
here, but I just might bother chasing this one down.

Unless something goes boom in the meantime, yep. MK decided 3 sessions ago
to hold a ball in his newly-acquired castle, and that's going to take place
this session.

This is kinda weird. I'm much more used to the castle being that place next
to the dungeon, with the WEAPON SHOP, the ARMOUR SHOP and the ITEM SHOP (as
Nockermensch aptly put it). This "roleplaying" biz is not what I usually
do.

In fact, with the number of levelled NPCs (a dozen or so of 10th+ level)
that are likely to attend, it's looking a bit like one of your freeforms.
Any hints on how to run something like this?

... also, you ARE inviting Thea, yes? ;)

---------
Unsurprising, as a lot of the illustrators nowadays are comics guys.
-------------------
Cos it's big and it's clever. All these panels make me think of Games
Workshop stuff in the 80s - all sticking out ribs and spurious spiky bits.

Some of the spikes don't have spikes! Needs more spikes...

This says to me, "Eating mushrooms and licking toads".
I'm sorry, it's the same old same old again and again. Someone suggested the
other week regarding all the 3rd ed art that they were determined to get
away from the Tolkienesque. Quite apart from that not being the best timing,
why try to break the LotR chains in order to simply put on new chains (but
with spikes!) in the form of 80s Citadel Miniatures style "Dark pointy bits
chaos knight" derivatives of equal or greater triteness?

Silly person. I just changed the rules so that each point counts
negative, so you are now -1,000 points in the hole.

Some manga has pretty pictures.
Much manga has mediocre pictures.
Some manga has ugly pictures.
Drowning in generalizations only makes you look stupid. And that goes for
positive and negative generalizations equally.

But there is manga without sexual content...

...

...I guess.

But the important part is that there are lots of manga where there's a
bit sexy poses and innuendo only for pleasing the fans (and selling
more books) while the story main theme has nothing to do with sex.

Much like what happens in Image comics, except that the girls are
pretty and the story, as I already said, is usually interesting.

No, but I honestly think that all manga-style art is ugly. It's just the polar
opposite of my taste, for whatever reason.

I'm not going to have this argument again; look in Google if you want to see how
I defend this contention given the wide range of manga art styles, and decide
based on that whether I'm a kook or just differently opinionated.

There's a difference between recognizing your personal dislike of something,
and thinking that it is objectively, inherently crappy.
For instance, the Sistine Chapel? Not to my taste. But do you see me
proclaiming it to be hideous, crap art?

I forgot that Americans have a limited sense of humour. :P

Anyway, Stephen, the point is that it's not worth my time to make it explicitly
clear that everything I say is my opinion, and that people who disagree
shouldn't be bothered by the flat way in which I express it, because I know my
tastes aren't universal, I just don't have the inclination to bother to couch my
opinions in as gentle and non-offensive a set of terms as I could, et cetera et
cetera ad infinitum et nauseam.

If you cannot handle the frank and unapologetic nature of USENET intercourse you
oughta take a hike.

Why, exactly. Well, said, Chris.

But I still don't like you.

Usenet intercourse? WHOAH, I've *REALLY* been doing it WRONG all this time!

Yes, let's all take another big helping from the pot of
over-generalizations.... ;P
Oh, you meant that to be humorous?
Alright then.
But you must admit, considering the behavior of people like MSB, it was rather
unfair for you to expect me to take that as not being serious in tone. Tone
does, after all, tend to be so very muted in text.
Next time, add a smiley or something, please?

>Anyway, Stephen, the point is that it's not worth my time to make it
>explicitly
>clear that everything I say is my opinion,

And I agree. I wasn't asking you to do that. I was asking you to make it
clearer in one particular circumstance, because you were using loaded language.
Disagree if the particular circumstance warranted it if you will, but you can't
deny that at SOME times it is, in fact, appropriate to stick an IMHO equivalent
in there. Well, you can, but I'll boggle. :)

>and that people who disagree
>shouldn't be bothered by the flat way in which I express it,

The language you used was hostile, not flat. ;)
Unless this is another "tone" thing I missed. Emoticons are our friends, when
used wisely and well.

>I just don't have the inclination to bother to couch my
>opinions in as gentle and non-offensive a set of terms as I could,

There are many degrees of hostility and lack thereof. I don't expect anyone to
be at the extreme of either end, and in fact will request such when I think it
is warranted and will do some good. (Which is why I spoke up with you, but
don't speak up whenever MSB gets all insulting, for example.)

>If you cannot handle the frank and unapologetic nature of USENET intercourse

No, I think I'll admonish people acting foolish regardless of the medium,
thanks. Just because Usenet makes it easier to give in to certain vices
doesn't mean they ought to be given into by default. After all, if someone
came in here speaking l33t or however you spell it, you'd be admonishing them,
right? Or top posting, etc.

>Bloody AOLusers.

Okay, that one I KNOW is too lame to be meant seriously. ;)

I do, actually. There probably aren't too many examples of it in the Google
archive for rec.games.frp.dnd, because so many people here will do it readily,
but I'm pretty conscious of netiquette in the smaller groups I frequent and I'll
MSB the stupid there.

Dear Chris,

The generally accepted phraseology for this in online discussions here

Believe me, I'm trying. The general requirement that employers are working
under that people must have experience to get hired for a job that gives them
that experience is doing me no favors, however, and the state of the economy in
general is sadly not as perkalicious as it could be....

Woah. My experience is markedly different with this. I live in the
middle of nowhere, with only cows, farms, cornfields, and forests
around, yet have so much work, it cuts significantly into my
gaming time, and family life. I don't get enough time with my wife
and children, to prepare games, and/or to play.

I don't know where you are residing, however the economy is on
overdrive in the midwest. Experience hasn't been required for any
of the jobs I have taken in the last decade or so, and to be
truthful, the starting pay sucked. That pay changed after working
for a bit though, and if you are willing to;

a) Travel or commute to work
b) Work like a draft horse
c) Be friendly, gentle, and open with peers
d) Be open to working for companies based in other cities and/or
locales, and tailor your job search accordingly.

You should have no trouble finding decent work.

I think the hard part in the whole deal was finding employers that
are ethical in that they don't try to deceive their customers, or
their employees. It took me awhile before I settled on a pair of
jobs at companies that truly focused on excellence.

Point out where he claimed that it was objectively crappy and you might
have a point. Here's a hint for you: Comments about art are almost
always subjective, and you should assume such unless the author
explicitly states otherwise.

Wrong: "manga" is just Japanese for "comic".

example definition (from http://web.cs.mun.ca/~anime/afs/animdict.html):
"Sometimes confused with anime, manga is the Japanese word for comic book
(or Graphic Novel, if you prefer) and is used in English to mean Japanese
comic books. Manga and anime are very closely related, as artists frequently
crossover, as do the characters they create. Usually the manga is created
first, and if it becomes really popular then the market it deemed capable of
supporting a much more costly animation based on it."

Sexual manga is labelled "hentai", and some other word I forget, whose exact
definition(s) I do not know.

Tentacle porn, anyone?

Because he meant to say:
"Manga /should always have/ sexual content. HTH, HAND."
but he didn't want to appear over-eager.
