Greetings!

Last week I was playing in a game where one of my skulking subs
went into the same sea sector as my enemy, and I FIREed upon their ship;
an frg. I hit the frg, and damaged it. At the same time, I receive the
message that there is return fire...and my sub has taken something like
130 hits for 100 damage - sinking my 100% sub. Or something like that.

Then, in a game I am playing in currently, I fire on an frg,
and I receive return fire.

I always though that return fire could *only* come from the
thing you were attacking. But, frgs can't attack subs - right? AND
they certainly couldn'y kill a sub in *one* shot. So, something else
must have returned fire. I though DD - but, can a DD kill a sub in
*one* shot? Then I thought Fort? But they can't attack subs...

Anyway - can anyone shed some light on the missing pieces
to this puzzle? What can return fire? What can kill a sb in 1 shot?
Inquiring minds want to know...

Oh GEEZ. I had a memory of sb's not having torp - that you had to wait
until nucsubs or something. I've *never* used torp with an sb before, LOL.

So, actually, that begs the question:

Why can submarines use the FIRE command? I've made the, wrong, assumption for years that fire is what all ships, including subs, made their attack with.

I made the, wrong, assumption that torp was to be used for ship vs. sub warfare. Like sub on sub, or a boat with torpedos, etc.

I think this is a result of not knowing how the game worked several years ago, and then "learning" incorrectly - and never nkowing it was being done wrong. Anyway, just wondering why subs should fire - what the need would ever be - unless there a minimum efficiency needed for torp - I'll have to look that up.

Cheers

Torp uses mobility. Fire doesn't.

I've never used fire from a sub (I never even thought of that) but I
can imagine a scenario where it would be necessary. Take out the
machine guns or a cannon, surface, and put them on top. Sometimes you
have to be able to eliminate the' enemy at all costs.

Three shells make a torp, so if you have just one or two shells left, all you
can do is fire those.

Ah, makes a little more sense. I know submarines often had deck guns, at least
I believe in WWII.

I just feel so silly FIREing with my subs all these years - no wonder my subs
weren't as effective as "eveyone else's" LOL

Thanks for the help, guys!
