I always wanted to have a GM char, not even my main char is a GM
anything. When OSI maker-marked blacksmithing and you started to see
marked suits of plate on vendors, I thought - wow, now that’s cool. I
had often read horror stories about mind-numbing, neuron-destroying,
synapse-wrenching hours of mining. I didn’t think it was that bad,
until I tried it myself. After about 15 minutes I said screw this shit.
Eventually OSI got around to maker-marking the tailor. And I thought -
wow, now that’s really cool. I knew I would eventually start up my own
tailor because of this. But not right away, I still had a few goals for
my main char to accomplish.
About five months ago my main char had pretty much accomplished all the
goals I set out for him and I finally decided to make my GM tailor. I
spent a good hour deciding on the name: Gianni Versace, DKNY, Ralph
Lauren, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Issey Miyaki, etc.
Finally I decided on “Giorgio Armani”.
In fact, I almost made him “GiOrGiO ArMaNi”. Hahaha. NOT!!!
Anyways, I gave him 45 str, 50 tailoring, and 50 tactics (he’s a “pure”
tailor). I outfitted him with some bone armor and a spear and headed
for Rat Valley. Aside from being both a newbie magnet and a PK magnet,
Rat Valley has the most proliferous spawn of mountain goats this side of
a shepherd’s flock. It’s a veritable tailor’s paradise. As soon as I
got there, I got busy baby. For the next five months Rat Valley was my
home.
Now I’ve read all the posts and essays about how you can make a
gajillion K from tailoring. But I refused to take part in any of that
nonsense, I didn’t care for wealth. I wanted skill gain as fast as
possible. I’d make leather stuff and immediately dump it on the corpse
and move on to the next mountain goat. I didn’t want to waste time
hauling my ass back to town and selling all of that shit. Don’t get me
wrong, I have kept some of the stuff and sold it. Altogether my tailor
has about 40K in the bank, not even enough to buy a small house. So I’m
a “relatively” poor grandmaster tailor. Hard to believe there is such a
thing, hehe. Like I said, wealth wasn’t my goal - skill gain was. The
reason I wanted a GM tailor was so that my main char could wear
GM-marked clothes. Although now I would like to buy a guildstone so I
can put “Grandmaster Tailor” as my title for everyone to see when they
hit “allnames”. I think I’ll name the guild “SEW”.
After Deceit, the crossroads, and player-run towns; Rat Valley is
definitely one of the PK hotspots. I’d say the mountain goat to PK
ratio is about 10 to 1. It’s kind of weird tho. There were times when
I’d tailor for 3 days in a row and not run into a single PK. And there
were times when I got PKed every 15 minutes. One time I got PKed around
25 times. The PK finally got sick of it and killed off the wandering
healer. What a bastard.
All of my losses to PKs were effectively zero (well, I like to think so
anyway), as I could always make my own leather armor. Some of the PKs
eventually figured me out tho, and after killing me they would take my
sewing kits. Now that pissed me off!!! Mother-fucking PKs!!! I hate
em!!! I’d have to walk back all the way to the Yew moongate, waste a
good 15 minutes running back and forth until the damn gate dumped me in
Britain, go to the tailor and buy a couple of sewing kits, head back to
the moongate, waste another 15 minutes until I got dumped in Yew again,
and then head back down to Rat Valley. I fucking hate PKs!!!
Here’s another reason I hate PKs. My glorious lord used to be
fame-capped. Whenever I killed a daemon there was no message that I
received any fame at all. Thanks to PKs whenever my glorious lord kills
a daemon now it says I have received a good amount of fame. What’s an
EVing, blade-spiriting, fire-fielding, provoking monster harvester like
me to do? Mother-fucking PKs!!! I hate em!!!
I suppose all I can do is whine like a bitch. Hahaha.
Well anyways, every now and then I got discouraged of course. I’d lay
off my tailor for 2 or 3 days, sometimes a whole week. Many times I
just wanted to give up, especially when my skill was in the 80’s.
Finally tho the day came when I made my first studded tunic (I even
saved it, it’s lying in my bank box doing nothing but taking up item
count and weight). I said enough lolly-gagging and pussy-footing
around, I gotta get this guy to GM. I renewed my quest with a zealous
fervor. I was a “power tailor”. I’d kill, skin the hides, make studded
leather, dump item on corpse (I do my part in helping to reduce lag, so
should you); repeat, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
When I got to 97.8 I had to lay off UO for a week. I fucking kid you
not, the tendons and muscles in my forearm were getting way too sore.
They would twitch every now and then when I wasn’t playing UO. Fucking
scared the shit out of me. OSI should definitely make getting to GM
tailor easier than it is now. Lord knows how many times I’ve clicked
that damn mouse. Eventually some GM tailor wannabe nitwit with a sore
forearm is gonna do something foolish, like sue OSI. Don’t laugh, it
could happen. And here I am even planting the seeds of the idea into
the mind of whichever nitwit it’s going to be.
When I hit 99.9, I was like - Oh God, just one more. About 20 minutes
later I became a grandmaster. I made a studded tunic and, bam, I hit
100.0. I checked if the tunic was marked, it wasn’t. So I figured
whatever exceptional item I made next would be marked. I made a cloak,
clicked it and saw “a cloak sewn by Giorgio Armani”. I’ve saved both of
these items as well, the tunic that I hit 100.0 on and my first marked
item.
I only have 2 chars on my account; one is the ultimate, stream-lined PvM
char (this char also has all the wealth) and the other is of course my
GM tailor. I’ve never had an asshole char like a thief or PK, so I
don’t really know about those things such as what it’s like to first
successfully steal off someone or to first successfully kill a newbie.
Accomplishing GM tailor felt quite different. Seeing your char’s name
on an item that he crafted is like the fucking coolest thing in the UO
world. Cooler than finding a war hammer of vanquishing, cooler than
becoming a glorious lord. I can’t describe it, you have to experience
it for yourself. You have to toil for months on end. You have to
experience all the frustration. You have to get sore forearm. You have
to curse OSI for making it so difficult. You have to curse all the
macroers for making OSI make it so difficult. Then to finally see your
name on a piece of clothing is just soooooo fucking cool. I’m sure all
you GM blacksmiths know what I’m talking about. I could care less if I
don’t sell a single piece of clothing. It’s just so cool to see my name
on a cloak.
I suppose I should fess up tho. When OSI maker-marked tailoring, I was
hoping that someone else who also had a decent amount of knowledge of
the fashion industry would go thru the trouble of making a GM tailor.
In my search I found a good amount of tailors, but none named “Giorgio
Armani”. I would have been content to find “Ralph Lauren” or “Calvin
Klein”, but no such luck. I kept getting annoyed and thinking “damn
lazy-ass tailors”. I was too lazy to do it myself, so I sunk to
criticizing other tailors for being lazy (men are like this). I was in
denial for the longest time. Finally I accepted the truth - most
tailors were in it for the money. If I wanted my shard to have even
just a little bit more class, I’d have to do it myself. Hahaha.
I imagine I'll start up a tailor shop within a few days or so, to see if
I can sell anything.
Well, that’s my story. Hope you enjoyed it.

you out. :)
Great Bob
A friend is working on a GM tailor on GL by the name of Calvin Klein
... at 85 or so currently. My GM tailor to be is at 76 ... a long way
to go yet. GM tailor was sooo easy to get before the changes to the
skill system, but unfortunately I started just about right after that.
I'm looking foward to my store's own makers mark in a couple months,
glad you've gotten yours.
