Hello everyone,

Hate to sound like an idiot but what are the guidelines for treasure
hunting? Ive read the UO manuals and also the Prima UO book and can find
no reference to treasure maps. I feel silly as I bought a treasure map
for about 1K. Didnt know what the heck to do next. I stared at it for a
while. Tried to figure out the area shown on the map with no success.
Why do I have to plot a course? I know its not supposed to be this hard
but a little help and guidance on how to treasure hunt the right way
would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, don't worry!! It's much harder than you can possibly imagine!

At 1K for the treasure map, it is kind of hard to figure out if that is an
expensive Level 1 or a cheap Level 2 map.

Either way, if it is your first hunt (or really any hunt for that matter),
do not go alone! Level 1 maps will eventually be conquerable alone, I can
do it alone at 61 STR, but if you don't know what level this map is, do not
go alone, no matter what.

Go to the Stratics site and find the treasure map section that gives you the
exact cooridinates of the treasure and grab a sextent and a buddy and go for
it. You may want to check ahead at the monster spawn in that area and make
sure you can survive there as well. We went on a hunt last night and got
ambushed big time by Trolls, Orc Lords and the such. It was kinda
surprising, but we were ok.

The monsters that will spawn from a Level 1 chest aren't too difficult:
Mongbats, Ratmen, Skeletons, Orcs, Headless, Zombies...but from a Level 2
chest, they are more difficult...again, Stratics will tell you more about
that in the Treasure Hunter Profession section.

I hope this helps.

Thnaks everyone,

I've only been playing for about two months or so and I didnt even realize there
were different levels or that certain skills were required. This really helps me
a ton! I didnt even consider that monsters would appear upon revealing the
chest! *LOL*

It sounds a bit hairy but I think I'm gonna enjoy this new task. Thanks everyone
once again, you were all very helpful.

They are much simpler than they sound :)

First, if you bought it from a vendor, did it say "A tattered treasure map"? If not,
then someone else has already de-coded it and it's no good. Also, there should be a pin
marking the spot <near> where the treasure is located. I mention this because I've seen
con-artists on Atlantic and other shards who put regular maps out and sell them as
"treasure maps" hoping that the buyer isn't paying attention.

If it was an undecoded tattered treasure map, then your character who opened it and took a
look (decoded it) is the one who will have to do the digging. I'd say that for 1K it's
probably a level 1, which means you should be able to do it all alone, unless you have an
aversion to ratmen and headless ones.

Now, this is the part that gets tricky.... you can either go to the area where the pin is
at and start digging all over the place [know that in this case X does not mark the spot
at all] There are several theories and school's of thought on this one.... some say that
the treasure is somewhere near the middle of the shadow cast by the pin, some say that it
is somewhere near the center of the pin itself... even stratics suggests that it could be
a couple screens away from the marked spot. This gets a bit bothersome if you have
dragged a band of warriors and mages from their duties to come help you banish the baddies
that spawn. It gets reallllllly boring to stand around and wait as a lone person takes a
few steps and tries to dig, takes a few steps and tries to dig.... etc., sometimes for
hours...... only to find out that you've sat there waiting expectantly for not much of
anything :)

What I would suggest, at this point, is perhaps using one of the maping sites that show
pictures of the maps along with coordinates. I use this to "magically" find dig sites
when folks "hire" me to take them and their hunting parties out to dig up their
accumulated pile-o-maps. It makes for a much more pleasant experience for all :)

All you do is match the picture of your map up with a picture on the site, write down the
coordinates (example 22.43S by 54.72E), then buy a sextant from the tinkerman and take
off.... dig when you get to the spot, and bingo... treasure. I would recommend this
site, although I'm sure there are others. http://greatlakes.webtoys.net/maparchive/ .

Ok... so, you've gotten your coordinates, and gated, recalled, walked, ran to the spot
where your treasure is located. What to expect then? Well, depends on the level of the
chest. Regardless of the level 4 things happen.

1. There will be a digging noise when you hit the right spot, and a chest will magically
raise from the ground.

2. There will be some sort of spawn as soon as the chest gets fully exposed [with the
execption here of most level 1's in which pretty much nothing happens] Level 2 and beyond
will spawn a variety of nasty super-charged monsters. Level 2 isn't so bad, but starting
at level 3 expect Ogre Lords (about 50 hit points per wack if they get you), Liche Lords,
Dread Spiders, Elementals (I've seen air and fire mostly), Daemons, elder gazers, etc...
You need to get rid of these before you worry about opening the chest. If you suspect
that your map is anything beyond level 2, I'd take some company along. These things are
tough to kill (Ogre Lords in particular take forever if you're not organized).

3. After the initial spawn has been eliminated, the chest will need to be unlocked (voice
of experience here for when you get hooked on doing these and move up to higher levels...
don't dig up a level 4 or 5 chest if you don't have GM lockpicking or know someone, who is
online and playing at the time, who does... it's not pretty) After unlocking it, heed
Icelady's advice and stand back and cast telekinesis on it. If you are with a group, make
sure they all stand back to. (Not a problem with level 1, and you'll be able to tell by
the initial spawn if you need to do this or not. Level 1 is a minor boom and little
damage)

4. Now that the chest is opened you are ready to gather the "loot" You need to be ready
to kill more spawn. If you loot fast, the spawn will come fast.... not good if you are
alone and it's higher than a level 2. This will be one monster at a time....if you don't
snatch and grab stuff out of the chest. When I hire out to do chests, I do the looting.
I make that real clear before any digging happens. I sort as I loot (gold in a bag, regs
in a bag, gems and scrolls in a bag and magic items in a bag) This makes it much easier
to deal with later on. As I am looting, when something spawns, the hunting party kills it
before anything else is taken from the chest.

Bonus Round: If you have a good level 3 or higher chest and a hunting party who loves
the trill of the kill, so to speak.. you can "milk" the chest... after the last item has
been taken out, you can put stuff back in and take it out (I usually drop the completed
map in the chest and pull it out again and again) Most of the time you can get 3 or 4 or
even more spawns and kills from this.... Some folks don't like to do that, and I'd rather
not since my treasure hunter isn't a fighter at all and each spawn means he risks his life
:) But if my "employers" wish to have this happen I will comply.

Good luck to you and Happy Hunting!!! ~ Allan, Master Treasure Hunter, Atlantic

I opened level 4 chests with 92 lockpicking.

Dont go alone, have a friend with you ,who stands exactly on the same
tile as you, when you loot the chest and the monsters will not attack
you ! You can cast Blade spirit or energy vortex on the monsters then.
Hm,I admit its a cheap tactic.
