It's happened to me three times now. I fight with something that turns
out to be more than I can handle, watch my hit points dwindle, and at
some point in the low teens decide I'd better RUN. But I can't. I run
a ways, then get pulled back, as if by a string, into the clutches of
whatever I've been fighting. Along with messages indicating that my
stamina is gone.

The first time this happened, I was rescued by a passing knight
errant. The second time it happened, I was able to heal up enough to
kill off the dire wolf before it killed me. The third time it
happened, outside Delucia, I was dead (by orcs) and looted (by
passersby) before I could do a thing.

What can't I just break off combat and run?

When your health gets that low your stamina drops as you move so it's best
to run before it gets below like 20-25 so you can get far enough away to
heal or escape. The "pulled back like on a string" effect is rubber band lag
which probably occurs in your case because you tried moving when your
stamina hit 0 and it caused a back log of the system message. Only way to
solve that is to keep an eye on your stamina and carry a couple of refresh
potions to down if it's droping real fast.

Cheers.

Often helps to _walk_ away if you can, rather than run (with slow
monsters). This way you dont lose stamina so fast - then get behind
something to recover, like a house. It's less of a problem when you
get better because you have much more stamina.

Your stamina is never higher than your health. If you have 50 hit points
and 15 stamina, once you go to 10 hp you will only have 10 stamina.

Also, monsters that use maces will lower your stamina really fast. Maces
just take it out of you.

Put the two together and you can easily get knocked down to 0 stamina.

Keep your health bar up and haul out at 25 hp or higher.
