I have a swordfighter that is almost 80 swords, 80 tac, 45 parry, but
only 23 magic resist. I have been fighting monsters, bears, etc. to
bring
my skills up.
I was on the Sonoma shard this morning out hunting, and someone
came on screen and immediately cast 'An Ex Por' (paralyze). I
checked allnames and he was red. I boogied out of there on my
horse before the spell completed. If I am going to fight back,
do I need to have 'magic reflection' cast on myself while wandering
the woods? How much resist do I need to resist a paralyze spell?
Will a refresh potion break me out of it? My fighter is going
to have to take time out to raise magery so he can cast magic reflect...
I am assuming the guy was going to ebolt me after the paralyze...
The PKs are not going to drive me away from the game. I like the
edge it gives, like someone else said.
The other night, I was killed by a gazer, and looted by some goon
named Batman on Sonoma. After I ressed and ran back, my corpse
was mostly empty. Some nice folks, and a red or two went and
fetched me a nice suit of armor and a katana and I went back to
playing. They even tried to chase the guy down and get my stuff back.
So even with the goons and jerks, I still won't go back and play
Baldur's gate. With the people interaction, both good and bad,
this is the best RPG game I have played. Oh, the interaction
with players has been mostly on the good side.
But there was one goof the other night who stormed into the
tailor shop in britain, and accused me of looting his corpse.
I don't know if he was seriously impaired, or just trying to
see if I would be gullible enough to give him my stuff. After
cursing at me for 5 minutes or so, he just wandered off. He claimed
someone PKed him and then I looted his body. Not true, but
I guess people will believe what they want...

Having reflection up generally is not enough, almost any competent pk
will bring it down with a weak offensive spell like magic arrow, then
cast paralysis. Currently, paralysis cannot be resisted and only the
highest resistance (90 +) seems to affect the length of time left
paralyzed. I can tell you that at 62 resistance I stay stuck in place
for quite some time.
A good strategy for countering this is to bring along 3 or 4 of the
little boxes you can buy and cast Magic Trap on each of them. When you
are paralyzed, double click one of those boxes. You will take a point
of damage, which is enough to break the paralysis.
>
>I am assuming the guy was going to ebolt me after the paralyze...

Possibly, but more likely he would hit you with an Explosion spell and
cast another spell while the delayed damage from explosion is going
through. GM mages will commonly do an explosion / flamestrike combo,
which if they have high eval int and you have only 23 resist will
easily do 60 to 70 points of damage.
Your best bet would be if you are paralyzed and you see "Vas Ort Flam"
appear over the pkiller's head, break the paralysis with a trapped box
and recall out immediately. Recall is your friend...work your magery
into the 60s so that you almost never fail (it becomes impossible to
fail at 72.1 magery). If you don't want to work magery to that point,
buy recall scrolls and a rune marked for a safe zone.
BTW, since you've reached 80 tactics / swords with 45 parrying, I'd
recommend either staying in the T2A lands to work up your skills or
going to the dungeon Shame to fight earth elementals (bring orange
potions, there's lots of little poisonous critters in both places).

Running in firefields lengthwise (scroll or spellbook) works good to get
your resist up to a more workable level, if not into magic, seek the magic

Your swords and tacs look in good shape from here.

If you can cast magic trap on a pouch, then get ready to dbl-click this
pouch when paralyzed, you'll break the paralysis. Also, setting off a good
old plain purple potion in your pack should break the paralysis, giving you
a chance to run a bit and equip or flee.

Great assumption! Ebolt, flamestrike, who knows! I had a confused mage once
cast strength on me right after he magic arrowed me then paralyzed me. The
paralyze is a good sign they mean business.
Refresh potions wont affect paralyze and the resist you need to absorb a
paralyze is....I dunno =-)

Right on then! There's PLENTY of things to do in UO without ever having to
run into PK's - if you're smart - regardless of what you see posted here.
And I am not talking about staying in town forever either. Glad to see
you're a fighter, theres a lot around here. Me, closing in on year 2 this

Welcome to UO! Remember something about reds, sometimes those players have
gotten that way helping people just as yourself against the Batman's of the
game.

That they will Steve and what can you do. UO is unique that way in that
some total stranger will come up to you, acccuse you of something far
fetched and challenge you to step outside of town to settle it. This is
where UO is a little beyond other games IMHO. You either a.) go outside of
town with this guy to teach him a lesson b.) Simply ignore him and move
about your business, unless he/she is harrassing you which then gets turned
over to GM's c.) Talk through it with your people skills!
So many choices not enough hours in the day.
Best of luck.

Actually, he was probably going to do a paralyze-explosion-flamestrike
combo. The explosion has a slight delay, and it hits about the same
time that the flamestrike goes off. Really nasty. Fun to cast, yes,
but nasty. :)
<<re: the goof who accused you of looting>>
Sounds like someone who is full of crap. I'd tell you to ignore him and
he'll go away, but it seems that you figured that one out already...

Actually, with 71 resist I resisted a paralyze cast by a Murderer Fredo
(14k on the Sonoma bounty board) in Shame level 1. Probably just a
freak occurrence though.

Other common tactics include poison potions (not very reliable as far as
I know), pre-cast weak spells (similar to what's used to drop magic
reflect), and purple potions (3 second timer).

I've been told there's a potential for up to 110 damage from an
explosion / flame strike (assuming 100 magery, 100 Eval Int, 0 Resist).
Damage from a spell is modified by a comparison between your resist and
your opponent's eval int, so any resist at all will help.

If you head into Shame on Sonoma, be careful of [408] guild titles. The
guild's name is "Sonoma's Most Wanted, 408", and they specialize in
cheap pkill tactics. There are other pks which frequent the area, but
[408] are the ones I see the most....

You gotta be getting better than that manta, unless i've had an

Are you talking about monsters para's or players ?
Is it just me or do monsters ebolts and flamestrikes just suck eggs
