I know that a good way to keep horses happy is by feeding them. When you
feed them, you get the message "your pet looks happier". But how can you
tell when they had enough? They seem to be bottomless pits. Do they just
keep eating as long as you feed them? Or do they stop eating at a certain
point?

Its a real pain when your horse goes wild during a fight and I dont want to
have to invest 30 points in taming to save myself 700 gold everytime it goes
wild.

You have to feed them until you get the message:

"Your pet is too full to eat anymore"

It also helps to have very high animal lore!!

Wes the newbie strikes again.
Feed them once, their loyalty hops to the top, and if they do go wild
you can tame them with 0 skill.

Horses are, indeed, bottomless pits.

you will never get the message: "Your pet is too full to eat anymore"

But, if you dont want to invest in animal lore, my general rule of thumb is a
"confused" (wild) horse goes to "wonderfully happy" in 4 cabbages. depends on
the type of food you use, carrots take a little more, etc. keep the horse fed
every hour or so...feed it 4 before you go out, then one every hour or so, it
should stay tame. i've kept the same horse for months this way.

good luck :)~

Austin the slight of wit again fails to see the humor/sarcasm in my post.

This works quite well for me; I usually give it a pair of apples or a
bale of hay every hour or two. This has kept my horses quite tame;
Dove tried to provoke my last horse to keep from losing the skill
points and got a message that it was too loyal to its master to be
provoked.

On Catskills they get off and scream "Silver good" two hundred times,
which is mightily annoying since it does absolutely nothing for loyalty.

I try to tell them, listen to the animal, it makes "positive" sounds and
"negative" sounds. Saying "silver stay" makes the horse whinny in the
affirmative, indicating that it understands the command. Saying "silver
dance" makes the horse whinny in the negative, indicating that it
doesn't know what you're talking about.

"Silver good" always results in negative. Sorry, the horse just doesn't
understand, and it has no affect whatsoever on loyalty.

Then I do it again five minutes later because there's another player
saying "pinto good!"

Is this a problem on other shards too, or is Cats the only one?

The other thing you should note, is that animals get happier each time

you command them successfully. This is why you see the odd person get
off his horse, and scream "Silver follow me" two hundred times.

Spamming the horse this way works, but is annoying for other people.
As a rule of thumb, I get off my horse about every half hour of play
and tell it to follow me 3 or 4 times. Doing this I've had my latest
horse for over a week without feeding it. Either way its still really
helpful to have some animal lore.

That's cause anyone can provoke players--doesn't take any skill at
all. :)

"all follow me" is a command to give full stamina to the horse
If you run fast with your horse he will be tired.. then just unmount him
say "all follow me" and remount him
That's why people say that to restam their horse

no problem on Europa, we say "horse come" and it works fine ;)

Fetch me is a nifty way to mount up, too. Just don't say all fetch me when
you have several powerful critters, or they will make a wish, and so will you.

*nudge*

For the humor impaired, ... no, on second though, I meant it. :-)
