However, I have to withdraw my statements - I haven't really played
UO since May, and haven't really PvP'd since March. So, my char
isn't exactly up to "current PvP standards" (which for a mage seems
to be GM in everything magely and a GM sword/mace skill)
Well, I have a high archery adn aint' gonna change it :P
Anyhow, this is what I've noticed over the past few days of fighting -
In a group fight, archery *is* kinda pointless. It just doesn't have
the speed (as a tank/mage mind you - my dex is admittedly low) to
sink in a shot when needed like a melee weapon does.
However, in a 1 on 1 type situation, it is good & bad. For one thing,
many people now underestimate it (the LOL phenom that I mentioneD) - which
is an advantage, but only until people "catch on". However, if you combine
it w/ a speedy connection, you are pretty much immune to the "current
pvp standards" fighter - they will precast a spell, then hit you with
a heavy hitting weapon and cast the spell - however, as a fast moving archer,
they never hit you with said weapon (which makes them bitch at you for
"running").
However, on the flip side, it doesn't really generate enough offense
to really counter thme (so in a sense it is balanced - they can't hit me,
and I can't do much damage to them) - not to mention these fights tend to
go on and on and on and arrows run out :P However, until I turned off UO
this afternoon (once school let out hehe) I had 10 kills and 0 deaths,
and this was my 3rd day PvPing since march :P

Since someone has brought up the topic of "Archery" again. Are those bows of
"Vanquishing" worth their while? I've never tried anything "higher" than
Might. Would a bow of Vanq be useful for PvP, or more to the point -
Me(archer) Vs chickenshit Red mage, who lives on top of his tower casting
spells on those who pass by. ?
Will have the range for a counter attack? I haven't tried it out yet, I know
magic has a longer range than archery (it seems that way to me anyway) and
that he needs "line of sight" to cast his spells.

Yeha - i think the rate of miss is much higher than that of a melee weapon.
I can't prove it, though. I have 98ish archery and i swear i miss 75% of the
time.

Sometimes. THe problem with this is, as you noted, we archers pretty
much only use normal bows. THey can't be repaired - thus the "good magic
bows" quickly become "shit". Thus, most ppl I know in PvP archery only
use GM bows. Just easier to deal with.
Isn't that kinda like saying ... "Hey everyone! kill me!" ?
hehe

Whoa! How did you hold the flamestrike that long?
I can't usually hold a spell past one shot. And usually that shot
whifs. So I drop the bow, re-cast ... and then gotta wait another 10
seconds for the shot.
I do believe ... the spell hold delay is 15 seconds, and the fire rate
for someone with 25dex is 10 seconds.

I honestly don't know - I've no idea on the "numbers" involved. I was
holding my casts for "a few shots", although half the time I went to cast
the cast wasn't lost due to the delay, but rather, i'd hit last
target before de-equipping (tons and tons o' rust on me)
How sure are you on those #'s?

They were the numbers last time I checked. I wonder what if anything
has changed.
OSI was talking about removing the re-requip delay.
*shurgs* Like I said, I honestly have no idea. I just know that
I fire awfully damn slow, but i was still managing to precast FS
w/o recasting every single time :)

Hmm, well, IMO I think they went a bit overboard in the "kill PvP
archery as the uber-tactic" patch, so that'd be good. Although, as I
said, I don't think it is as "nerfed" as the PvPers would lead one
to believe. Hell, just yesterday some kewlio told me the reason I
beat him 3x in a row was because I was a "pussy archer" - which
basically means "your tactic kicks ass, but since all the other kewlio
PvP people claims it does not, then I don't do it either" (he was
the typical Tank/Mage)
I thought the spell hold delay was 30 seconds? In which case, 2 arrow
shots would fit....
