I checked this out today to see what it was all about. I entered the pit,
found a fighter that looked rather tough, and attacked him. First, I got the
criminal warning .. wasn't sure what to do, so I chose OK and started
fighting. I noticed I turned grey, which I expected .. but I would like to
know the following:

What happens if I kill the NPC I'm fighting? do I turn red? I was healing
him along with myself, as I didnt' want to find out the hard way.

What about when I'm done fighting? I ran around in circles for a few minutes
till I turned blue again and left the pit. I'm assuming I can't leave the
pit while I'm still grey.

Am I supposed to kill the NPC? Is there a way to tell him that I'm done
fighting and to leave me alone? Should I hire the NPC or just walk up and
start beating on him?

Any help would be appreciated

If he's a true fighter-NPC then you won't go red: test all NPC's before you
attack them by saying "Vendor buy" whilst standing next to them.
If they sell stuff you'll get a count: if they don't they're prey!

And you don't need to go grey to get a fighter to attack you: just hire them
and say their name and tell them to attack you. (Should work: you won't go
grey even if you kill them, also I expect you'll be able to tell them to
stop if you want them too!)

I think a lot of them say "I am not a murderer!"
So you might need to use the guard me command, if you are in a guild, they
will go guild colour and then you can attack them - as with tames.

Ah!

I did see a Weapons Trainer (actually his title) NPC today in Deluccia: but
I suppose that just means you buy skill of him like other NPC's.

I didn't realise he was an NPC at first: just thought he was waiting for me
to Finnish with the Bulls so he could kill them. The way he was lurking on
the outside pasture though, I just had to bring up his paper-doll to find
out what his title and profession was. And if I hadn't done that I would
have thought he was another player!
He was one very unusual looking NPC!!!

I was able to do the "<name> Attack" command and point at myself. The
fighter said "Very Well" and started swinging at me. I was using a dagger,
as a few hits with my war fork took him down to 50% health.
I was also able to heal the NPC as we fought, along with myself, so I was
raising healing more than anything. I think i gained .2 anat in about a half
hour or so. whoopee.

Also, after paying the fighter 70gp for his services, I was able to say
"<name> Drop" and the fighter dropped 90gp, some arrows that I tossed out,
and some lil chumpy weapon. At least I got my money back.
Then I had the neat idea of hiring fighters at 70gp, telling them to drop,
and earning a quick 20gp. 2 fighters in a row didn't drop a thing, so
someone else already had this idea.

Food for thought .. you hire 2 fighers, and tell them each to guard you.
Then you tell each to attack you .. will they end up fighting each other, or
will they hit each other as they are hitting you? I'mma try that tonight
just for fun.

Yeah weapons trainers have been around for a while. I've seen them in the
little fort part of Delucia .. and my theif char got her inital mace skill
from him. They dont train much better than any other NPC .. ~250gp for
~30-35 skill. I hired one once when I wasn't all that good at fencing, had
it guard me and I attacked it .. it whooped my arse...

But what is the "Fetch" command for?
(Must remember to get my Dragons to drop their loot: I keep forgetting!)

Fetch command should make your pet (possibly hireling) walk over to a
specified object and get it. Maybe they keep it till you use a drop command,
or maybe they come to you and drop it. Not sure.

I believe they come to you and drop it. I read a trick on Stratics once
about turning a riding horse into a pack horse by telling it to "fetch" a
pile of ore, then running away so it couldn't quite ever reach you until
you got where you wanted it to drop the ore.

I've tried the Fetch command with various creatures on various targets in
the past with no success: perhaps OSI have removed this command. I'll have
another try later (after P-Hour) see if a can get any creature to Fetch
anything.

I'm pretty sure it has been removed at one time or another. One time or
another being when it was used as part of a house break in exploit.

I have caught people "in the act" using it on my houses in the past.

I'm a tamer and have a couple of good mages that could use this command, but
I don't want to see it back in the game just yet. I'd have to think about it
first to decide if it was exploitable under the new lockdown rules.

Ditto for stealing things off of boats. I don't know that it could still be
used to loot things off a boat deck, but it used to work and was reported by
me and others on TC as an exploit.
